Ask A Quick Question

No. That was one of the canons I received at the "other" forum. Never mind a suit, I think it looks bad with overcoats and rain coats.
I think it looks great undone on raincoats. At least on me in my navy DB Inspector Gadget full accoutrements calf length trench. Louche. Deshabille. Carefree carefullness. Insouciance.

In fact I'm tempted to take up smoking again just to complete the mise en scene.

Dandy elegant?

This is my size in everything expect in the Waist across middle button measurement..that jacket is 20 inches and my size is 21.5 ( I measured all my jackets)

so question 1) can I extend the waist 3 inches (1.5 on each side) 2) I know it is a bespoke but it is this measurement more or less standard? He needs to have a very exaggerated drop or a tiny waist!

You can ask him to re measure but I think that will look odd with the darts in the front and the excess length on the side.

Looks good in some of BnTailor pics as well.

If you guys come across any please post a pic here. I found a DB navy gabardine L.B.M. 1911 jacket that looked great on me but I like to wear my jackets open which could prevent me from buying it.

This enough for you?

Oh damn, forgot incontro did it, he looks taller and leaner than but I bet I could make it work still. And the guy above him looks great too. Only setback now is there's no matching trousers with the jacket I want and I've made a commitment to only buy suits. Not sure how I feel about making a fake suit again.

My Isaia suit pants are 52 but I usually fit 48 to 50. Anyone know if I can have pleats added in the front as a way to take in the waist and seat?

Journeyman Journeyman what garment bags do you use to wash your shirts?

I just use the ones that I get from the 100 yen store near my parents-in-law's house in Tokyo. I picked up about 20 when we were there a few years back and they're still going strong without any problems. They even had ones in different fineness/thickness of mesh for undergarments or black/dark clothes so you can keep the darker colours separated and the bags filter out fluff.

You could, but I don't know if its going to take out that much space. They'd have to be some mighty big fucking pleats to cover 2-4"

I only need about 2.5" total taken out, with one pleat on each leg that's only 1.25" per pleat and since the pleat is folded the pleat width would only be half that .625" in width, correct?

Won't that mean much more deconstruction of the waistband than usual? And the side seams will be moved forward if everything is taken from the front.

I usually just get the 2.5" taken out from the middle back which does just the opposite of moving the front sideways and back 1.25" respectively on each side. I folded two front pleats by hand trying these new pants on and the center crease line looked really good, very centered, whereas pulling in the back the front pant crease becomes very skewed. This is my most valuable suit so I have to make sure no alterationist fucks it up. So stressful not having a real tailor or alterationist right now.

I get my laundry bags from the Japanese store chain Daiso which has a store not far from my house. . Everything at Daiso is $2.80. I think that get 2 or maybe 3 bags.

In case anyone else ever needs to do this I think I found a good alterationst today. She said the waistband has to be completely removed, the extra waistband material taken in from the back as usual then resewn onto the pant with pleats. A somewhat complex alteration she's only charging me $50 for.

Also my diaper butt was mostly resolved on the other pair of pants although I wish I had them pleated originally instead.

Sorry for the stupid question, but do you use one bag for each shirt? I hate when the shirts' sleeve get tangled and I would like to get some of those bags too

Sometimes i'm lazy and chuck 3 shirts in a big bag. Doesn't seem to matter. But logic tells me 1 per bag is best.

I am going to buy an iron and iron board this weekend. How do you guys wash your dress shirts? I have tide detergent, might get a tide shirt collar stick for collar stains. Any recs how proper shirt washing? I live in an apt, so the washer is not the best.

Might hand wash in luke warm water since my shirts don't get dirty except around the neck and pit areas.

machine wash on gentle, cold temp. no fabric softener. air dry. heat is the enemy of all fabric.

you could spring for a fancy detergent, but honestly, i don't think that's necessary.

I wash my shirts with a natural laundry powder that has Borax (obama) in it and use The Laundress Stain Solution for spot stains and collar stains. Then, I wash my whites in hot water and my colours in warm/cold water. Then, everything goes into a dryer with the lowest possible heat for about 30 minutes.

I iron my shirts every now and then.

The Laundress products work, if you are willing to fork over the cash, they work and they are natural.

Maybe I need to consider washing whites in warm, I thought it was hot air that was damaging, not so much hot water.

Wouldn't dryer crack the buttons?

Does Borax actually work regarding whitening the shirts without any damaging effect? I know its an inert compound.

Well, I have plenty of white OCBDs and I can't see any damage. The worst 'damage' before they go into the wash is collar and sleeve staining. Uh, yeah, some times buttons get cracked after. If you can line/air dry that's obviously better. Can't line dry in the mid of feburary.

Yes, Borax is very safe. Whether it whitens significantly is up for debate. A common additive is 1/2c borax and 1/2c white vinegar. Oxygenated bleach (Oxy-Clean types) also work well to whiten fabrics.

Might try on my BB shirt this weekend. I have heard of borax/lemon juice combo. I have a Dior white shirt that has yellowed a bit over the years, want to whiten it a bit.
