Disagreeable Menswear Post Of The Day

That Gaul bloke was a clothing nutcase. An Ivy obsessive who then went on to European style maniac.

Crompton is getting a bit like William Wardrobe. They both wear kit that costs a lot. But neither of them look that great in it. They both also seek out the obscure.

The next step for Crompton will be weekend trips with a steamer trunk so that he has all his essentials. He might find that his high roller market disappears or he may lose interest himself. In fairness to Mr. Wardrobe I do think he was in it primarily for the interest in clothes. Crompton is just chancing his arm to see if he can make a few bob.

I thought he was fake when he admitted that they changed the colour of Steve McQueen's shirt on the cover of Ivy Style. But that may have been Graham Marsh's background in graphic design getting the better of it, but I think not, he was a true jazz modernist. And I've been following his work since 1994.

I wonder whether this will be another Crompton- demanded over-suppressed nightmare?!
And pro-tip: Do not put your hands in the trouser pockets during a jacket fitting.

Crompton is getting boring. But the comments are getting interesting. The masses are beginning to question his wisdom. He gets offended VERY easily. Just ask him why he never reviews British tailors after his A&S fad, when he is forever traipsing around the Italian hinterland seeking out hidden gems.

Prices Crompton quotes for Italian clothes do not seem cheap. Maybe he gets ‘bunga bunga’ included in the deal?

British readers are the ones claiming that they can get less expensive, but comparable to Savile Row, kit by travelling half an hour to St Albans. But Cromps is not interested. Claims of military and naval tailoring styles also fall on deaf ears. And anyway he would have to visit at ‘least eight of them’. The prospect of eight commissions in the British provinces apparently horrifies him.

I sense a kindred spirit. A fellow customer of Mr Golding, Kingstonian?

Prices ARE cheap once you go south
And the closer africa gets, the lower the prices

Naples is about as south as it gets, short of hitting Africa. And it isn't cheap. The cheapest tailors, I suspect, are to be found eastwards. I look forward to Crompers Does The Carpathians, follow by Trans Compers Urals.

The best thing about Carpathian tailoring is that it sounds much more elite than it is.

Hi Untermensch,

Good tailoring, at root, is always going to be expensive and a big outlay, particularly something bespoke.

It takes three years, at root, to train a PPE undergrad to write such gems.

Now, in re Naples not being the southernmost point of Italy, that's like saying Tierra del Fuego isn't the southernmost point on the globe. Technically, it isn't, but southward lies nothing but barren ice and penguins. Or saying that Russia is a lot more than Moscow and St Petersburg. I once had a suit cut in Novosibirsk. It was cheap. It was unwearable.

Now then. Onwards and upwards (or downwards, as the case may be). Channelling full-on Quentin Crisp there.

So Sicily is nothing but barren ice and penguins?
I'd be wary of them gangsters for saying such things

You are mixing up things
Suits cut in moscow, st pete, königsberg, sochi, anapa, sevastopol or other russian cities will not be better.
It is all about the girls.

How can you not mention the great sciamat?
All the fantastic sicilian farmer tailors mentioned on SF?

And again, what is expensive and inexpensive in your opinion?

Can we stop it with the metaphysical debates and get back to slagging Rubinacci?

Please tell me
Which price (CMT) do you consider expensive?
You said Naples it NOT cheap. What does that mean to you? Euro, GBP, Indian or Pakistan Rupee, Russky Rubles- up to you.

for me cheap bespoke ends around the 800 euro for a giacca price mark (cmt)
and thats a poor man's point of view

Man asks if he can wear morning dress or a ‘stroller’ to his own baptism. We soon learn it is not a Deep South ‘Take me to the river’ style baptism.

However, Andyites still worry that morning dress is too much - a bit Tibor in the soda fountain. Formality and flyover country are discussed. Suspicions of trolling are raised. Six pages of this :-
