Great Cars

I find Koenigeggs to be seriously blah looking cars. But they sure can haul ass.

Named One:1 because it's 1 HP per KG.

But for the price of one you could have a lot of fun with Russian escorts instead, and that for a long time.

Anyway, I'd take this car over any of the new ones from the same maker:

Pass on Russian hookers. Actually, any hookers.

That is indeed a stunning car.

I am totally amazed that Mercedes still has cachet left. I thought the SLR and the Black series were quite respectable though.
Vintage sports cars, especially that vintage, tend to be very disappointing rides for the modern driver.

I just imagine that the folks who spend $2.5 million on a car would also spend a lot of money on escorts. Or "personal assistants"!

Never saw the value proposition in paying someone for sex... would I want a meaningless fuck or $400 in my pocket? I'll take the money.

If you drive that car and can't pull a woman, you're a maroon.

Or office pants

I guess it's like going to a proper bespoke tailor instead of a home sewer: You pay for a professional service. :ThankYou:
BTW, I think you should charge more than $400!

Step aside BMW M3, the Alfa Romeo Giulia has arrived! 3.0 V6 with 510hp. The engine is built by Chrysler and tweaked by Ferrari, so should be more reliable than sporty Alfas of the past. It's real wheel drive, manual is available, 50/50 weight balance and can do 0-60mph in 3.9s!

2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia: This Is It (Updated)

I followed the link. Sorry, it doesn't appeal to me. Front and side is kind of BMW, back looks like an Audi.
I guess that is what you get when the same people design cars for different companies or they try to copy their successful lines.

Sorry, but I really dislike this behaviour. As soon as a new car is released you'll have hundreds of people comparing the most minute exterior details with every other car in existence. If anything the front looks way more like Mazda than BMW, but it doesn't matter and the whole process doesn't make any sense. Just appreciate it on its own.

Does the design on its own appeal to you? That's all that matters. To me it does. It's a good looking car with what hopefully proves to be a great engine and drivetrain. It weighs 1530kg, which isn't too bad either. It's a nice alternative to the German brands. Here's hoping it won't be too expensive.

Like I said, this car doesn't do it for me.
But if it is of any consolation, the latest BMW series do the same. All of them. The low front/ headlights just look wrong.
Actually, even if I had the money to buy any of them, I wouldn't go for a super- or hypercar. Too loud, too uncomfortable and too impractical for everyday life.

Have you ever driven one? Drives like any other car unless you put the pedal to the metal. They're not loud or uncomfortable at all. An M3 has the same space inside and in the trunk as regular 3 series, and lots of people drive those. This Alfa even disables cylinders for regular commuting.

It's called "Trabant" (or "Trabbi" by it's fans) and was the classical car from East Germany until 1989.
The body was made from a sort of plastic compound. Only the chassis would rust, but was apparently easy to repair unless you waited too long.

I think Gianni had one back in the days in Poland:

2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia: This Is It (Updated)

I saw an article on this yesterday, and it sounds very interesting.

However, I've got to say that I don't like the styling all that much, either.

For some reason, the designers haven't made it a recognisable Alfa. Sure, it's got the grill and it's got the classic Alfa-style wheels, but the lights and body don't have any Alfa heritage.

I much prefer the look of the Alfa 4C - although, of course, it's much less practical than the Giulia, as the 4C is two doors and two seats:

I like the 4C as well. I like the 8C better though. Truly a stunning car, and it makes very nice sound as well. Apparently it handled like crap, but I guess its looks more than make up for it. The 156 and 159 are cool looking cars too, and the Brera was interesting as well. My favourite has to be the 155, especially the DTM race car. Now that was a bad ass car.

I think Alfa is playing it safe with the Giula. If this one doesn't succeed Alfa as a whole might be fonished soon, or become a brand that's nothing more than a rebadged Chrysler (which it's getting close to already).

The only good alfas are the old ones, specially the Giulleta and the GTV6.

I've only seen pictures on the 8C, never seen it in real life. It does look like absolute sex on wheels, though, and it's great to see that Alfa put a smaller, cheaper version (the 4C) on sale.

If I could persuade my wife (which I'll never be able to), I'd buy a 4C as it would make a great weekend car. Perhaps I'll be able to persuade her to let me get a second-hand one after the kids have finished school, as my MX-5 will be 35 years old by that time...

I don't quite agree, but some of the older Alfas certainly do have a huge amount of charm. Others, of course, were just rubbish.

One of the great ones was the late 1960s-early 1970s Alfa GTV 1750:

My next-door-neighbour and I restored one of these about 15 years ago. He drove it during the week and I drove it on weekends. Damn, it was a great car. Sure, the driving position was uncomfortable and was best suited to a chimpanzee, but it looked great, handled well and sounded absolutely amazing.

Unfortunately, we both got married (to other people) and had kids so we sold the car.

Floyd Mayweather (did I mention he probably smacked a woman!) paid like $5M for some crazy-ass street-legal road car from that hard-to-spell company.
Looks great, but I really don't get the point. If you have a tenth the price of the car, you can afford gobs of track time with an actual racing car. On what public road does such a car achieve anything more than dick-waving better than many cars at around the $100k mark, which are much more comfortable, reliable...

He doesn't want to drive a car on a track to test its limits and his as a driver. He wants it to look sexy parked outside the club or just to ogle it in his garage full of cars.

Recently I saw a stupid show with these guys who build custom fish tanks and they were at Shaq's house and checking out his cars. There was a Ferrari that was featured that had not been driven since he bought it

Not that I've ever really raced or gone all high performance, but money is better spent on training than on hardware if you really want speed.
I know damn well I'm not maxing out the limits of my cheapo hatchback...ever. For years I've delighted in riding circles around clueless squids on superbikes while atop a crummy commuter twin. How you drive, not what you drive, unless dick-waving.

I remember an article or maybe a letter to the editor in Road and Track many years ago where the author was either schooled or witnessed a dumb-ass driver in a muscle car being schooled by Steve McQueen in a mini on a single lane stretch of roadway.

That's not surprising. The Ferraris are built for medium sized guys with small dicks. There is no Ferrari Shaq will fit into.

was a custom job. he told one of the aquarium guys if he could touch the pedals he could have the car

Maybe it's changed, but I recall an article where PJ O'Rourke commented on his co-driver not being up to fatcat proportions, so he kept activating the fuel cutoff switch in the seat. That was a 308, so a while back.

^Damn, that's hideous. Why on earth would you want a fishtank like that in your house?

With regard to "it's not what you drive, it's how you drive it", some years back I was coming back from an MX-5 club day up on a mountain outside the city where I live. It was a road that I'd driven quite a few times before, so I knew it well and felt confident driving pretty fast on it.

About a quarter of the way down, I realised that there was a Ferrari 360 coming down the road behind me at quite a clip. He caught up to me on the straight but then I pulled away from him through the corner, and we played that game all of the way down the mountain - I'd be faster, quite a lot faster, through the corners but then he'd easily catch me on the straights but then lose me at the next corner and then catch up to me on the next straight.

At the bottom of the mountain, I pulled over at a picnic area to have a drink of water and the Ferrari driver pulled over, too. He came over to me and started telling me about how amazed he was that my car could pull away from his through the corners and that he didn't think that a little old Mazda could do that. I recommended that he attend a few driver training days or track days so that he could get a feel for the way that his car handled, so that he would know its limits and feel comfortable pushing the car without pushing it too far. After all, driving well is generally not about having lots of power - it's about knowing how the car you are driving handles and how to get the most out of it.
