Has Vass Lost Its Soul

another disasterous balance mishappen on a hybrid style and all they can do is shoulder tapping.

#12194 - http://www.styleforum.net/t/130044/the-ultimate-vass-porn-thread/12180#post_7322351

I know, from comments that you've made previously, that you don't like the U last and that you think that Vass should remain true to its Austro-Hungarian roots instead of adopting sleeker, more chiselled lasts.

However, that's your personal opinion - it's not a universal truth.

Looking at Roger's shoes, I frankly don't think that there's anything wrong with them. They're not disastrous and they don't appear to be misshapen. Personally, I don't think that I'd every commission a pair of austerity brogues in navy blue calf leather, but that doesn't mean that they're objectively wrong. It just means that they're wrong for me - but that's fine, because they're not my shoes.

On a related note, I really, really hope that this forum isn't going to devolve into Film Noir Buff II. I enjoy reading SF and I also enjoy coming here because it's different from SF - but that doesn't mean that I want to read post after post after post of people obsessively nit-picking and personally insulting SF members. It's entirely possible to criticise SF for the things that you might not like (SF groupthink, neglect of the Buying & Selling subfora, the "affiliate" system etc) without feeling the need to aim personal criticism at individual members.

sure. its only one side of the coin. understood, that not many, me included, know why Vass is changing the direction. I assume and finally hope it is an economical decision. so be it.

Literally I'm not responsible for your lack of experience. we have an adage: If you haven't seen better... I cannot blame you for that. just take it as it is.

man, I'm not talking about the colour. you should really read my comments carefully. you'd better do not question my background and knowledge. I really can't stand that. not only it is disrespectful, its not appropriate.

I'm sorry, I cannot help you with that. eye for eye, tooth for tooth. its written in the bible...

So, in essence, it's absolutely fine for you to question other people's background and knowledge, as well as their personal qualities, and it's fine for you to be very disrespectful as well as extremely patronising towards other people - but it's not fine for others to do that to you??

What was that you were saying about "an eye for an eye"?

its been a while... in a nutshell: its an ambivalent story, at least from an theological pov.
Fair enough. Anyway, just take a step back for a minute. You've been drifting from your central thread premise, which was about Vass, to more criticism of individuals and their choices, which is much less so. When you're on premise in here its great. When it drifts into the more personal it gets to be a bit preachy.

Stated above.

anger is not a good advisor. its not helping your case.

I'm not angry at all.

It's you who seem to be the angry one, frequently making bitter personal attacks on people with whom you disagree.

I agree entirely.

If you don't like RogerP's shoes, then you need to explain why, in a manner which is not personally insulting.

If you simply don't like the style or shape, then explain why you think so. If you think that they're poorly constructed, then explain why you think so. If you think that they're an inappropriate style of shoe for Vass to be making, then explain why you think so. To do so is educational and shows the knowledge that you said that you possess and is much more appropriate than simply lashing out and insulting people's choices without properly explaining why, which simply makes you sound bitter and petty.

although, its not important enough to spend my time on explanations, I will try to give you an insight what bothers me.

If you don't think that spending time on explanations is important, then perhaps you shouldn't bother spending time trawling StyleForum that you can launch barrages of criticism and personal attacks, either. There are better ways of spending your time, you know.

Alright Journeyman, you made your point. You two leave it be for now unless you have some Vass related issues to discuss.

More lile Vash, no?

lemme just check. I recall a nice guy, who had to defend his choice?

vass - perfection.webp

it seems, there is still hope ...

in a nutshell: a guy stopped by in my atelier to have his shoes "refreshed"

point of departure: a pair of vass bespoke in shell cordovan. yes, Vass offers bespoke service. it really doesn't matter that igents are incapable to comprehend what shoemaking consists of, anyway.

shoes haven't seen a tree in months and have been worn vigorously for the same time. time to resolve: thirty minutes.
yes, we have a winner, although without a chicken dinner. service charge + tip + glass of wine and a new chapter in the shoe anecdote book.

the moral of the story: fuck the mc method - its useless under real life conditions.

cheers.

There is a group order in the spanish forum. Eur 337 for any Rtw model in any leather configuration (shell and museum excluded). Price includes trees + shipping.

Thinking in joining them, but my next shoe needs to be a loafer and I don't like any of the Vass loafer I have seen.

The other option is the wildsmith loafer on unlined suede. Price for me is around GBP 270.

I understand that the Vass is better value for money and all together a better shoe but I can't make a decission! Any suggestions?

despite the fact that loafers are the hardest to fit correctly. what don't you like about the vash?
given your knowledge about the spanish shoe industry, you have tons of options, not?

nice price for the group buy, but another step to decreasing qualtiy, imo.

That sounds like an absolutely fantastic price for Vass, particularly as it includes trees and shipping.

Personally, I've had trouble finding loafers that fit well, and I've tried various models from various makers. I got a pair of Polo RL Marlows (made by Crockett & Jones) in shell cordovan a while ago and they're brilliant. So comfortable that they feel as though they were made specifically for my feet. I'm very happy that I've finally found a pair of loafers that fit me well.

well, the grass is always greener at the other side. :fadancing: and actually I don't have any Vash and I wanted to try that is all. If I join the group buy I i will go for traditional Vash. (budapester or the Viennese models)

For the loafers Carminas has a beatiful loafer in the Uetam last, and there is mid priced Spanish manufacturers that makes a very similar model to the Carmina Uetam and that retails for 145 Euros.

Maybe you are right and I should be going for a local option for half theprice..

ah ok, change of directions for a better and more reasonable solution.

rule of thumb: according to the fact that a first time online purchase of a loafer is nothing more than a gamble, I recommend to buy a loafer in person and call it a day.
furthermore, I appreciate your decision to go with a traditional style. imo, the common group buy is another nail in the coffin for their heritage.
