Home Improvement & Repair

funny enough I have the same model here. its had two cartridges and needed a completely handle and ball joint replacement. now its dripping and squeaking when i open and close the handle.

I was thinking Kohler but they seem to be going the way of Moen from what I read online. I just want something that has better quality cartridges and is easy to replace them on.

Yeah Kohler was the better product but I'm not sure that's still the case. The Kohler toilets and stuff are still pretty good but it seems like everyone has shitty fixtures now.

It's probably worth a shot anyway.

They’re all using plastic parts apparently. I just want something I don’t have to completely disassemble from under the sink to replace the cartridges.

That is one upside of the Delta. You just take the handle off and unscrew the ring and the cartridge pops out.

Since getting an in-home water softener and filter system a few years ago, I haven’t had to change a cartridge. Eventually I’ll need to when the seals give out, but I used to be changing the damn things all the time because the water would be coming out sideways.

Yeah I think that’s something I’m going to have to seriously look at. Every water related item item in this house has gone bad at one point or another. How much did it run you? How hard is it to maintain?

What I’ve come to find out is that not all models have the same replacement system.

I wanna say it was about fifteen hundred. Our water quality is shit here, so it was worth it. Maintenance is easy - dump two bags of salt in the bin about four times a year.

did you get just the softener or the water filtration aspect as well?

indeed. in particular, this model of moen sink faucet requires you to access the cartridge from the bottom underneath each handle by basically disassembling the whole fucking thing.

I'd be doing this but with faucet.

Was thinking about it and it was around $2k, 4 years ago.

Tap water is now drinkable and everyone’s hair is shinier. Most importantly, the plumbing fixtures aren’t gunked up with crap.

Maintenance is a couple bags of salt and every 4 years you need them to come out and do a full-service, water test and calibration with a new filter. Haven’t done that yet, but it’s nearly $500.

Called around a few places today and it seems like the price would be between $2750 and $3250. That’s for a salt softener and carbon fikter unit. Under sink filter would be extra.

It was interesting and unexpected to see the difference the water filter made to everyone’s hair. Within a week it was very noticeably healthier looking. Like, wtf is in the city water that had been making it look dull and dry before?

That’s what the kids who drink the tap water look like, here. Heavy metals, lead pipes and a bunch of other shit.
I keep forgetting melbourne has one of the best tasting water in the world. It’s actually sweet. We just go to the tap and have a glass. I get shocked when I go to other countries or even to other states in Oz. Even other cities in Victoria.

Chlorine. Lots and lots of chlorine. Think of what going swimming does to your hair. It’s that but on a much smaller scale over a longer period of time.

I finally found an AC guy that I like. He came out today and did a detailed inspection and made suggestions with quotes on different solutions to the dumpster fire of a system we’ve been patching up since new 15 years ago.

I know Lennox suck. He wants to replace the condensers and coils with Train. My brief bit of googling says that’s a much better brand.

Still, this is going to be expensive whatever we do.

ac systems are like assholes. everyone's got an opinion on them. i talked to several companies about brands. most people seemed to think American Standard made good machines, followed by Carrier, and then it was a toss up between Trane, Lennox, and Rheem with very personal opinions about the three of those depending on who you spoke to.

most people said Bryant, York, and Goodman were dogshit.

this was roughly 5 years ago now so I'm not sure what the quality is like these days. one important thing to consider is any energy efficiency rebates through the state along with any of the rebates for the Biden recovery 2022 bill that should be getting enacted by the states this year. for instance, there is one rebate for insulation, which would help with a lot of AC cooling issues.

This system has been problematic since day 1 and the four companies I’ve used over the past 15 years have all been quick to suggest repairs without every really explaining why it’s been such a dumpster fire. This guy explained that the split system and something about cold return isn’t good, plus the ducting (and our high end allergen catching filters) isn’t letting enough air into the system.

He is recommending new Trane coils and condensers, disabling the split system for the ground floor and a single HEPA filter per system up in the attic that allows more air through.

The cost is a killer though. I’m still trying to understand the downside of doing both the coils this year along with the new filter and disabling the split system. Then do the condensers in a year or two. And the furnace when it gives out, since it is still going strong.

so - you have a combined heating and cooling? and its ducted from a central driver/point?

I have 4 separate splits systems RCAC and a heat pump hot water plus 7kw solar.

Two AC systems (so two coils and two compressors). A three ton split to the first two floors and a two ton for the top floor. Heating and cooling. Furnace in the attic with the coils.

I looked into solar but it’s really not a good investment here - we’d barely recoup the cost when they are wheeling me out for the old people’s home.

You know you’re getting old when you get hot and bothered over a sink

I’ve never seen this kind of sink faucet setup before.

Trying to troubleshoot a simple garage door issue but it’s doing my head in. About once in every 50 times, to motor wirrs and nothing happens. If I pop the cord to release the arms from the track it then works fine every time. What’s the issue here??

I need a new drill for minor home repairs and projects. Doesn’t have to be anything too fancy but I’m sick of B&D crap that keeps breaking.

Big fan of Milwaukee fuel m12 and m18 systems. I think some of the combos were on sale at Home Depot for the holiday but if you tell me what specifically you want I can try and find you a deal.

My garage door opener finally crapped out and will probably need replacement. Are there any good brands or ones to avoid?
