It's always five o'clock somewhere

i figured. guess it depends on the spritzer.

what is a good brand of vermouth these days? you use Plymouth gin IIRC?

No I think formby was the bigger Plymouth guy. Not that I don't like it or anything. I use Gunpowder for most stuff but No 3 gin or Bombay for martinis.

To be honest I usually just use good old Martini & Rossi white vermouth. I tried some other but most were pretty average for what they cost. For red vermouth though the Carpano Formula Antica is fucking the shit. That's my go to Negroni.

Here ya go Grand Potentate Grand Potentate

How long would you queue for a bottle of Peroni and some canapes from a local Italian chef who had a few TV shows and now his own line of pasta on supermarket shelves?

This light wine is working out pretty well. 6.5%. It's barely a beer but at a 4L box per weekend it's only 2 1/2 bottles of standard wine. The only thing is I have to refrigerate it so it's not too acidic. No terrible repercussions on my weekend morning workouts as long as I get enough sleep.

This mead is an acquired taste. I hope it is not like that clearance Romanian wine.

Okay. Found a few bars I know and practically every other bar within a block or two of where I live.

I sat at a bar and drank orange juice and soda. After a few soda top ups my cheque was $2.50.

Everyone is late so now I have to buy liquor so we can drink it on the way to the stadium.

I go to this "craft" brewery that is owned by a restaurant chain.

Me: Do you serve any wine here?
Man: No. That's downstairs. It's only beer here.
Me: Okay. I usually drink Fuller's London Pride. What do you have here that is similar?
Man: I don't know what that is. Our selection of beer is above.
Me: It's pretty hoppy. Do you have something that's hoppy?
Man: I don't know which ones are hoppy. Is that an IPA? We have this for IPA.
Me: Well, it's an ale. How does that one taste?
Man: I've never drank it but it's supposed to be good.

I’m developing a real liking for whiskey. Happy to take recommendations for:

A) the best budget bottles that are good
B) something mid-tier or unusual to look-out for as a treat, next time I order at a bar
C) higher end stuff to put on my wish-list or for when someone else is paying

well then how are you "developing" a "liking" for "whiskey" if you aren't actively drinking it???
I drink it, I enjoy it. Over the years, we accumulated quite a lot of it - especially pandemic-era vendor shmooz boxes. Often blind taste samples or odd little bottles. I know I should have paid more attention to labels or learned a vocabulary to describe what I like.

Yeah doctor, that might have been helpful…

Is there a whiskey tasting in the area? A sampling? Local gun owners who drink whiskey club?

A... I used to get Buffalo Trace as a shot. Then the market seemed to move it towards the cheap end where it's used to mix cocktails. Now I even see it as a bar rail drink sometimes. Rather sad.

B... I used to drink a ton of Woodford when I was down south. It's not something you want to chug and can get quite floral if you're close to your limit.

B or C? the last time I was taken out the newly minted American wanted to try Blanton's (at a Michelin star Italian place but okay...) and see the bottle because the caps are collectibles.

I have a feeling doghouse probably has much better insights than I do.

As for the other country with an e in it, Bushmills Black Bush goes down pretty smooth. You can easily drink half a bottle. Plus it fits my monarchist profile.
Té Bheag was what people served me at the men's club when I was out of ideas and running low on liver processing capacity. (This was before I dove into Jameson as the cheapest whiskey you can order). The last one I tried at random staring at the shelf at a proper pub here was Writer's Tears. If you take a writer/journo with you they will say they produce enough of that themselves. I now avoid the 50 incarnations of Redbreast. I had an Irish bartender still promote it, but couldn't really explain all the variations and why it was so bloody expensive.

My old boss (who is not Indian) went to this Diwali party and showed me a photograph of their bar with a bottle of Amrut.

That mRNA thing was okay yesterday so I thought I could lift weights today. During my insomnia I realised it was a bit sore so I forced myself to sleep for a few hours. Today it has been killing me until I drank 100ml of rye. They ought to offer this along with the vaccine.

Is 6.5% alcohol wine still a wine? Is 8% alcohol wine still a wine?

I bought a few nice dessert ones for Mrs DB for Xmas and picked up this little bugger for myself to enjoy tonight
