Is this a US thing? None of the jobs I have interviewed for asked for references. It's a bit of a silly thing anyways, right? If your manager was unhappy that you left they could screw your over very easily.

Of course, and as if anyone has time to fill in some bureaucratic reference form. Mine just send it straight to me to fill out for them.

Needless to say my references were impeccable, but you're right, they make very little difference and the decision is almost always made at the interview. Or even well before then if there's a strong internal candidate.
 
Phew! Got the job offer and accepted. It's a step in a good direction and I'm feeling good about it, though my wife doesn't really see it.

Thanks. I'm thrilled. More money, better conditions and a lot more opportunities. Public Health and disease control is a bigger pool to swim in and regarded as more 'professional' than Emergency Management. Even though it's a step down in terms of management level I think it's a move back to a field I can do well in and enjoy more. And it's still more more money and better benefits.

Someone turned down a potential job offer on the difference of three or four weeks of vacation and it wasn't even one of their top needs from the job? I'm so glad competition is so dumb so I don't need to try so hard.

I only know of one person whom has some legitimate need for lots of vacation and flexibility working away from the office and that's because she is a single mother. Otherwise what's a week of PTO?

3 weeks off isn't very enjoyable though. That's how much I had in 2016. A week in June, a week in October and a week in November. You need at least 4 weeks so that you can take a week per quarter, or go somewhere further for 2 weeks during summer.

Probably was unable to drink on the job hence he needed more vacation time.
 
I wish my staff would do this for me as it appears Mr. Emanuel's advice to the incoming White House staff is this:

"The most important thing you can do is tell the President you're going to help him do his job. Like I always used to tell everybody, you can't go in there and tell him a problem. You better offer him a minimum of two solutions. Your job is not to throw problems at him and see if he can figure out a solution."
 
I read this yesterday in the paper. I'm not an executive trying to form a new team nor do I particularly think the title of the article is accurate. However, the author was spot on with one point:

"The leader must evaluate character and talent, but character is more important. By definition, reputation is what you do when everybody’s watching, but character is what you do when no one is watching. While team members will help you achieve objectives for the organization – or country – you, as head of the team, are responsible for their performance and behaviour. Senior team members can always surround themselves with talent, but if team members lack character or integrity, all the talent in the world won’t help. Just look at what happened to a company like Enron, or to an administration like Richard Nixon’s."

Interesting, but rule no. 3 is not applicable to all situations i.e. you may have a need, or desire to get rid of someone you have inherited, but employment laws/time served means that person is with you for the duration. In this instance, you have to learn the art of pissing with the dick you have got.
 
Or more politely: As a new CEO you have to work with the clay you have.
 
So, I think I might get a job offer in California soon (knock on wood), but I also think my girlfriend, who I would be moving to, is breaking up with me.

Should I still go and just live on my own? I've worked hard to get this new job, and it would be comparable to my current London job, slightly more money, much better work culture and a fun team, so less stressful. I could also take a nice 3 month break in between jobs, after having very little vacation the past 3 years. I'd be much further from my family, but I only see them twice a year anyways and I can still do that if I were to live in Cali. I think it would be a good place to put down roots, even if I'd have to start over relationship and friends wise.

You are only a kid - so go with change & adventure - just don't get sick in USA. It will never be cool enough to wear proper clothes - but it would do you good to loosen up a bit. USA people will think you are exotic. - Hell, even with my Oz accent, they thought I was Paul McCartney - I just gave up and signed autographs. Disappointingly most USA women approach sex as if its sport not art. Still. I hear the food has improved since I was there.
 
There will always be another woman and I wouldn't let love, or a girlfriend dictate my career moves. Once you've babied them up and you've kids like me, then it's a different thing and age comes into too. The only thing that would trouble me about the motivation - and I appreciate I do not have the full story - is wanting to take 3 month break between jobs. If the position and location is that attractive to you, then surely you will want to get there and on with making your life and career there as soon as possible?

Thanks, I agree the move would add some excitement to my life. A whole new continent to explore!

Thank you for the advice. The start date of the possible new job is fixed due to silly US visa rules. I'd like to start sooner, but that's not possible. Might as well enjoy a much needed vacation in that case.

Thanks, that's what I'm thinking as well. It'll be a bit risky, because I'll be moving away from the (perhaps soon no longer) financial centre of the world, and moving back would be quite difficult. However, I might never want to move back if I end up liking it.
 
There's always risk in any career move, especially when moving overseas, but outside of high risk hard ship locations, the risk is manageable. I did my great leap to another continent when I had just turned 31 and it was the best possible springboard into the zone of the highflyers and serious dosh. I actually went for less money, but with expenses and the fact it was a lot cheaper to live there, I had much more disposable income. If I hadn't made that move.....I dread to think where I might be now.

Also employers like those who have travelled abroad to pursue career opportunities (as long as it is verifiable), it shows commitment and drive that those who just want the easy life and to be mollycoddled lack. So I am sure your move will be an asset to your resume should you decide that London is desirable again in the future.

Like the others, my recommendation is just go!

You are young and it seems it wasn't overly hard to find a good job in the US. You have little binding you to London. You seem to have already weighed the risk of needing to return should you not like living in LA.

Don't forget to factor in that you will now be closer to murlsquirrel and the SF crew. Weekend shoe circles are in the offing. You will have to step up your shoe game though. Please get to the EG factory store and get some scratch & dents so you will fit in

Agreed on all points.

I have a pair of navy igent GG that I hardly wear! Would that suffice? Guess I'll have to start using Sicilian tailors as well.
 
Make sure your commute if you have one isn't long accounting for 8kph traffic flow.

And how can you call someone who lives 12hr flight away from you a gf? You weren't catfished?

I'd like to live by the beach, so will have weigh commute time vs closeness to the beach.

Lol we spent quite some time together in London and many trips after that. I think that scenario is more likely to happen to you.
