Resume, Job Help, & Job/Career Advice

Yes, we have an employee who is getting paid about $50k and gets away with disappearing, working from home whenever, leaving early, getting to arguments with upper mgmt. My boss says we're doing a "charity work." The employee who was fired, I just never knew her but she was a newbie making not much more. My "probational" period ends in 2 weeks, every new employee is put on 6 months of probation. I think someone like me is on a shorter leash and is more likely to be fired given my salary. But at the same time, I would provide a quality of work that matches my salary.

The danger zone here I class as €135,000-180,000 plus bonus. Sure target for annihilation in a downturn or reorganisation. You should operate slightly lower, also avoid 60% tax bracket and get the rest in bonus when the times are good.

Then there are the outer reaches, those getting €350,000 a year plus bonus. No matter how good you think you are, you will have 4-7 years max and then the shareholders will get rid if you're not meeting the performance targets. One bad year and your out. An associate has just had this happen to them and you won't get that money again in your mid-50's in a staff position.

Of course, you can chase the money contracting, but the above I am referring to straff positions here in The Netherlands coming home most evenings.

depends on what he wants in life. if he wants to be that man, then he leaves to stake his claim on the frontier. if he's ok with his position, then he stays and keeps on doing what he's doing.

I rather believe a man needs some basic acknowledgement, encouragement or a donut every time he is asked to march up and take the next hill.

I think employees making upper $100k and up are given about 6 months and if they fail to meet "someone's" expectation or doesn't produce, they're gone. I've seen that a lot here in the U.S.

Fulfilling your duties is not enough, not enough to make a difference if things get hard. You need to be committed in the long run to protect your own position. I mean senior, manager and above. If you're not constantly innovating, trying to get ahead of the game, you will get over taken by some of your competitors, or some rival. Sometimes, it's some very small 20 minute extra effort that delivers the breakthrough performance.

Yes. Mass at the decisive point - Napoleon. I'm not in my early 20s. I can't fight every single battle at peak intensity. Problem is I find myself less motivated to do it in my current surroundings as my peers are simply coasting and suffer no ill effects. I used to be motivated by my own dignity and professionalism but even that, to my disappointment, is slipping.

Another French man had the decisive moment sussed too - Cartier Bresson - the exact moment to take the photograph. The difference between a technically brilliant photograph of nothing at all and a work of art. One momentary second makes all the difference. You have to be ready, for your time, your own decisive moment of action.

Learn to differentiate between skirmishes, battles and war. Don't waste you energy on anything but the long game - the war.

Occasionally and without any self gain throw your all into a skirmish or battle and win it - just to inspire awe and fear in less skilled players.

Every now and then choose a few good battles to win on principle for someone else who deserves it.

not necessarily job related but have any of you guys ever run into a coworker or peer that has their own name as an email domain? E.G. his name is Bob Jones and the email on his card is contactme@bobjones.org or some such thing.

I ask because I need a new personal email but gmail is out of combos for my name, yet somehow having my own name as a domain seems both silly and pretentious when I think about it.

Yep, quite a few. Not too pretentious.

Lots of people have these personal emails now. Pretty unassuming and practical in my view.

You can just add a full stop as in:: rambo.mambo@gmail,com or rambo.notpauly@gmail or rambo.no5@gmail.com - A little bit of Monica in my life

Not for gmail. rambomambo & rambo.mambo are the same address.

My brother and an old uni mate both did it years ago explicitly for job hunting. They just route it back to one of their other e-mails. Unless your name is predisposed to something funny (surname king) I don't think it's unprofessional at all.

That said if an agency or headhunter is representing you I don't see your e-mail as the hiring manager anyway. They don't want me to bypass them and their commission.

Japanese concept to improve work life balance

I don't understand this at all. Effectively they made work part of how they see themselves for a "lifetime" and most of them work long hours and die anyway.

Just goes to say that there is no work life balance unless you only work 3 1/2 days out of the week.

How do you know when it's time to leave your job?

I know all the points but just never thought about it all at once.

Some real beauts in there, what a pretentious hungry young graduate: ''I asked him one day how he could do the same job for so long?'' If someone said that to me, I would verbally belt buckle them straight out of the door with a bad reference, to hell with policies of not giving company references.

Oh dear: ''Have you ever updated your file with Human Resources to reflect volunteering or community activities?'' CV straight into the bin!

The bottom line is: if you don't fit in with the regime and culture, it doesn't matter how good you are, you won't get ahead. That's why large corporations and bureaucracies can be a problem, where every actions is strategic, contribution to the bottom line is somewhat fuzzy and Machiavellian politics are the order of the day, should be best avoided, as they're higher risk to distinguish yourself from the herd. And even if you do, you might not be on the current scams or deemed usefully gullible/corruptible by senior directors who may or may not be running several scams.

Reminds me of the new departmental secretary (ie head of our government department of about 30 000 people) who came to talk at my branch conference some years ago. He'd only been in the job for a couple of months and, rather than talking to us about our work, about any concerns we'd noted, things we thought should be fixed, he wanted to talk about two things:
- Whether everyone in the department should wear a uniform, regardless of whether they have a direct, customer-facing position or not; and
- His firm belief that everyone should change jobs every two years.

Given that there were a few really outstanding and extremely knowledgeable people in the branch who'd been there for fifteen years or so, that advice didn't go down very well.

He was true to his word - he left after two years.

Global town hall for my division next week. We had the option of 2am ET or 8am ET. Let's see where I end up in the reorganization next month.

Just got this in my inbox. Do you guys think it's a good deal or What?

If you opt for The Elite Package, make sure you're wearing a timepiece that has real wrist presence, the one that gets the most wrist action and make sure they get a good wrist shot.

Preferably posed contrapposto on a John Deere.(sp?)

...these things MATTER.

Why would one pay to be recognised? Pay me - if you want to showcase me.

Show me the money Jerry

Hey - you have to take time away from your CEO of the Year job. Shareholders will want compensation for that. At the very least they don't want to feed or fly you.

I told them I'm clearly CEO of the decade, possibly the century.

But as we've discussed with Monkeyface Monkeyface I'll always buy the food.

I feel like making yet another useless poll on this - who picks up the cheque.

I feel disappointed that I was not recognized for my leadership acumen.

Oh well, someone recognized something in me today:
