I can't speak to the quality of the soles here, but I will say that the materials themselves should matter. Vibram has notoriously poor water traction. They're tough as shit but can be slippery as fuck.

....vibram wasn't one of the options :areyoukiddingme:

I slipped on a hill yesterday (wet granite curbs. who the fuck makes their curbs with polished granite) and bruised my leg, elbow, shoulder, hand. Mrs. Chorn now wants me to get some good shoes for dealing with the ice (Seoul streets are covered with ice 3 months out of the year). She's generally a bit of a worrier, but I am thinking of running with it (also thinking of being responsible). I have several shoes with Dainite soles. If there isn't a huge difference in ice traction, I may stick with them. If not, I might pick up something cheapish with commando soles, like this from Loake:

Just keep in mind that the toughness of the materials has very very little to do with their ability to handle certain surface conditions.

Take out your Dainte soles and give them a trial run next time its icy. Let us know if you return home bruised.

It's not the bad weather but the ice that follows. There is ice on the ground for at least 3 straight months. It doesn't get above freezing in January or February and doesn't get warm enough December or March to cause it to melt.

It's a moot point since I can't order Loake to South Korea. I have to buy them from South Korea Loake. Which is marked up 150 bucks. Fucking South Korea. I'll see if Unipair's cobbler can put commando soles on something.

I don't know much about clothing but might be able to contribute a little here when it comes to shoes. As a student I had a weekend job at a high-end shoe shop for several years where I picked up a few things.

not enough.

hey Chorn Chorn , what did you end up buying for your ice shoes/boots?

Straight up tanks from Herring. Ended up not fitting though. Just used shoes with Dainite when necessary and walked carefully, but it was a pretty mild winter and there wasn't too much ice.

Did you send them back? The lug sole would not have helped on black or sheer ice anyway. You need a softer rubber compound for that.

Crepe soles can be effective on ice. So too the Vibram honey coloured lug (it is a softer compound). Broomball shoes use soft natural rubber. Maximum surface contact, tiny little fingers not lugs. Why am I expounding on this?

A Topy or other brand of thin rubber sole is a lot like this. Soft & has low profile surface patterns.

I know there will be a lot of contrarians to this suggestion but it works for me.

I didn't. I should have. Several hundred down the drain. I tried wearing them twice.

Good to know about the soft rubber.

As a conditioner, why not?

well, sure it can work but seldomly with rougher boots. shoe care is all about knowledge and experience.

e.g. I visited a cobbler and we discussed a few things about shoe care. he handed me a tube and asked: do you know this? its expensive crap some travelling agent sold to me. guess whtat it was? saphir renovateur. I tried it myself, but tbh, nothing to write home about.

as thruth mentioned: I like shoe grease or any kind of dubbin. that never lets you down. good luck.

Sapphir even makes a dubbin but it's not like it's easy to get the whole Sapphir product line.

imo, why would someone need saphir? I don't get it. I only tried the reno and the tin wax. not only for the price, but I wouldn't buy/get it again.

you don't need it, Brother, some people want it!

aaaah, like the dover.

on a serious note: I have tried shoe care from various brands in the last thirty years. If you cannot detect what the leather demands, everything else is worthless, so to say.

True & true

Walker will be pleased.

BTW - why don't we ever see the Dutch forum in the Trainwreck thread? No wingnuts over there?

It's all in Dutch.

Re crat. He told me he lost log-in info and will check things out. he also asked me whether this forum was formerly named welldressedwellversed. Was it?
