Shoe care

Walking through the last rainstorm has buggered up the soles on my Church's. At least the part without the topy.

I really like the authoritative sound the shoes make when I walk but the cobbler nearby my office likes to install quieter soles as he did on my Allen Edmonds. Are there brands I should try?
 
Sorry, what are quieter soles? Topys? In my experience they are all the same and you feel no difference. In France they used one with a textured sole (like a crepe) but after a while the surfaced becomes flat and therefore slippery on water. I never had any problem with all the other types/models. Sorry I am unsure about brands.
 
What would be a nice replacement for that Saphir Renovateur or that thing?

I guess I just wanted a heel or something that makes a noise. I asked about metal taps earlier in this thread. The replacements for my Allen Edmonds are good - if I wanted to pursue a life in burglary.

I would like to buy something that I can have access easily, so I will opt for buying locally. Cause over the interwebz I would have to plan my restock including shipping delays. :(

I will need to check in that place but since they feel very fashionable I bet hey are going to charge a ridiculous amount for the products.

Well, its somewhat relative, since it would probably cost you a small fortune to ship it down there anyway.
 
Cobbler quoted me one month turnaround to vibram my new Guidi, turned down my offer to pay twice the fee for quick turnaround.

LelandJ LelandJ - Are you having entirely new soles, made out of Vibram rubber, put on to your new shoes, or are you instead talking about having thin Topy soles added to the existing leather soles on your shoes?

If it's the latter option, that makes perfect sense.

If it's the former option, that doesn't make much sense at all. It will cost quite a lot of money, I expect, and unless your cobbler is good, could end up damaging the shoes as I expect he will need to take off the original (but still new) soles and stitch the new Vibram soles on.

Done right, thin topy on front and .5 cm on heel it's not noticeable unless looking up close.

are we talking about sole leather and construction or the whole boot(s) and/or shoes?

Some of the heel leather is removed to keep the shoe level, good cobblers make the topy blend in.

Leather doesn't have to be thick to be strong. Wrong on the sizing, anywhere from half to two sizes larger from normal size.

actually, this is the shoe care thread. thats why I don't understand the urge to promote half assed measures. topying shoes is one of them. imo, one of the worst. its amateurish and stupid. probably you can explain what you think it might be good for?

How else do you recommend to prevent from eventually needing to resole without topy then?

this is not a serious question? resoling and eventually replacing a topy is a completely different animal in my book.

easiest measure:
- build a big rotation

intermediate steps:
- brass nails on the most exposed parts - heels and toes.
- treating the sole leather with leather grease as soon as it is roughed up from wearing
- watching the progress

more advanced:
- optimizing the fit. this is the key. as soon as the sole and heel wears out evenly you're safe.

rule of thumb: try to get styles you like on rubber soles. in this case they are built for the material from the scratch.
