The 2016 Summer Olympic Games

Refugee Yusra Mardini wins butterfly heat

She doesn't advance though.

"Mardini has become the darling of Rio and the face of the 10-member refugee team competing at the Olympic Games. Last August, Mardini and her family were trying to escape Syria aboard an overcrowded dinghy in choppy waters when disaster struck. After the motor quit, the six-man boat packed with 20 people began to capsize.

Mardini, her sister, and a third person jumped in the water to stabilize the dinghy. Swimming for three hours, they eventually got the boat to shore with everyone alive. Mardini’s family ultimately landed in Germany."

Honestly, what more can a woman do to get citizenship? Are they waiting for her to win a gold medal ?

There was just a brutal crash in the women's cycling road race.

Canada destroyed USA men's volleyball team.

SMH.

Expect Canada to do the unexpected. At the Olympics (summer) Canadian Olympians favoured to win, choke. Then we pick up some victories or unexpected medals like the bronze in the women's 4x100 swimming. Synchronized divers expected to medal? Didn't.

Does that mean we're getting something in women's footy?

I have three nations I will cheer for. Canada. My father's homeland. Great Britain.

I will also cheer for the Syrian refugees.

Canada is ranked 10th in women's football - I think they are playing well and above their world ranking, so on the surface it might seem good. But they won bronze last Olympics so that should mean a choke as a defending medalist. It is our national condition.

Samir Ait Said...

States finally ahead of everyone else in the medal count - by any method you count it.

Since I work in an office full of Bavarians, I should inquire about their lack of medals.

The entire Russian Paralympic team was banned

Although I know the Paralympic and IOC are two different committees, I can't think some horse trading was involved after Putin stepped in. Russia doesn't care about crippled people (or gays, or coloureds) so my thought it was brokered the Paralympics would take the full ban and some athletes for the main Olympics would be banned as a compromise.

The Russian Paralympic team finished second last olympics and apparently many of them were on the juice too

Are those the same ones operating the metal detectors from Day One and after lengthy queues and complaints they decided to let everyone through beep or no beep?

it doesn't state that the security force is "competent".

Hmm - interesting, were all those Great Britain medals amassed during the days of the Commonwealth & Empire? I don't remember them getting into top 5 except the run up to London 2012.

If you discount the London games of 1908 where they won 146 medals, which was by far their greatest games and an outlier in medals won. They have won 300+ medals since 1968; 168 of those since Sydney in 2000

Canadian Women's Rugby Sevens! I didn't even know we were good at Rugby. I heard we played old English style rugby equivalent to long ball England in footy.

i can't decide if this is sad or a great way to go out

Thai Olympic medalist's grandmother dies celebrating win

BANGKOK - The 84-year-old grandmother of a Thai Olympic bronze medal winner collapsed and died on Monday while celebrating the weightlifter's success in Rio, police said.

The octogenarian was watching a live broadcast of her 20-year-old grandson, Sinphet Kruaithong, take third place in the 56-kilogramme division

The octogenarian was watching a live broadcast of her 20-year-old grandson, Sinphet Kruaithong, take third place in the 56-kilogramme division.

But a viral video showed the jubilant scene of cheering fans in his rural hometown transform into tragedy after his grandmother, Subin Khongthap, collapsed while watching the competition on a projector.

"The initial assumption is that she died from heart failure -- but we have to wait for the hospital's result," said Somwang Prangprakoan a police officer in northeastern Surin province.

"I'm not sure if she was too excited, or if maybe she was already ill," he added.

During an interview with local press ahead of the competition, Sinphet's grandmother said she missed her grandson but was overjoyed by his sporting journey.

"I cheer him on, fight fight! I miss my grandson and want him to be successful. He does this for the country to bring the gold medal back," she said.

Sinphet was the second Thai athlete to win a medal in Rio, following a gold secured by a female weightlifter in the 48-kilogramme category on Saturday.

Sopita Tanasan, 21, is the fourth Thai woman ever to win a weightlifting Olympic gold.

I'm watching Olympics primetime. My father then goes to the iPad because he says he saw all of this.

One thing is certain - the fist pumps, screams of glory, or cries from triumphant scores & wins - I don't get that often in my daily life, but it's so addictive. I want to experience the same euphoria.

I watched ER on television too. They did the same thing. Isn't that what being in the medical profession is like? Banging on lockers, shooting basketballs, and throwing a clipboard with a patient chart on to the wall.

Sometimes. I used to crank the tunes during cases unless a whiny anaesthesiologist complained they couldn't hear anything. While doing anaesthesia rotations, some of the gas passers would tie the surgeon's shoe laces together. Surgeons throw instruments. An old surgeon used to jab you with a suture needle in the hand if he thought you weren't paying attention. Immaturity reigns supreme
