The All-Inclusive Shoe & Boot Thread

I hate to bring the level of shoo quality down, but I was sitting on the deck while a storm blew through, eating Cheezies and drinking Mountain Dew, and wondered what people wear as house shoes?

Aghh man, those photos are so hard on the eyes this morning. Look at those red puffy shoes, WOW. I don't own anything like that, all my soles are made of leather.

Yup, Thruth and crazy-ass winter shit no one else needs or thinks about. But, it has enough structure to be a stable outdoor platform. It has anti-slip grip soles.
Yes exactly, but you are `the Winter daddy' and `outdoor clothing daddy', so we respect you for the knowledge that you have. If you didn't have all these crazy things you wouldn't be you. While it is hard to see some of these things, it certainly gets me thinking, and l am better for it.

Thruth Thruth you are a shoo daddy, a winter daddy (the master), an outdoor clothing daddy, a coat daddy, a sock daddy, a sportscoat daddy etc. I just hope you are mentoring the up and coming big daddies, they need to be shown the way and taught properly.

I've tried to mentor up and coming daddies climbing the ladder, but none of them have had what it takes. I used to climb the ladder with a bloke years ago before the net, but he stagnated along the way and couldn't advance any more. He got stuck at Cheaney and Church's.

I never wear anything on my feet indoors, at home. I keep a pair of thongs/flip flops by the door if I’m just going out to the mailbox.

Shooey, there have only been a handful of members who have bespoke shoes. Even chaps with bespoke suits don’t have bespoke shoes.

You know, when I was in the city, there were a core of students who paid attention to what I wore and asked questions. But, in this frontier town it will be streetwear and workwear tips. If someone is wearing a jacket, they are from somewhere else. Plus 99% of my students are women. They can’t believe there isn’t a woman involved in my outfits.

I’ve told my tailor I’m done and left him my remaining cloth.

Prepare to be nothing but aghast from now on!

Wear this at the rock climbing gym in between climbs

and wondered what people wear as house shoes?

I’ve always liked house shoes that can go outside and are intended to go outside rather than just does so in a pinch.

Being an Australian, l wear shoos in the house. When l first get up in the morning I always wear my typical variety of basic house shoos that aren't too special:

- Cheaney chelsea boot
- Trickers double soled suede monk (a brute)
- Bruno Magli gyw platinum collection monk
- Trickers double soled split toe derby (a brute) etc etc

Bespoke shoos are largely too expensive these days if you rely on trunk shows, and much more expensive than bespoke suits. If you live in London or Italy it is more affordable to have shoos made, but otherwise it will be very pricey.

In Australia the bespoke trunk shows for shoos are non existent these days. With the terrible exchange rate no-one can really afford to do it. All top makers would charge well over 10K to come here. For eg, Berluti bespoke wants to do a trunk show here, and many wealthy Chinese buy Berluti in Australia, but only 8 people are on the list for a bespoke trunk show. I was on the list too, until they told me the starting price for a calfskin shoo 5 years ago, it was $14,000. These days l am sure it would be much more. The trunk show still hasn't happened years later...everyone probably got scared off by the prices. I was prepared to do 10K for Berluti bespoke for my first pair, and then get a second pair and be done, but the 14K tag shocked me to my core and l had to say goodbye to a 20 year dream of having a top French bespoke shoomaker make me a pair. Gaziano and Girling wouldn't be cheap either if they come here. Even when Cleverley came here years ago, there was still only a small market for it despite it being more affordable.

🤯 The price of a (not so small) car. Crazy.

Yes, it is never a good idea to wear good dress shoos for such things. Actually, l climbed on my wood pile tonight in handmade shoos because l was too lazy to change them. Lucky l didn't slip and scrape them, l might have even said a bad word. :o

Another time l went to the beach in RM Williams boots because l was didn't want to wear beach shoes. They got covered in salt water. Popped them in a plastic bag later on and dumped them in the shed. Found them 3 months later and they were covered in green mold (just like green suede). They were stuffed after that. Leather went rock hard.

Are these custom made? I’d like to try something like this, but they never have extra wide fittings.

For as much as I chuckle at Shooey’s eccentricities, I may not be that different: I never wear sneakers or athletic shoes outside the gym. It’s always leather shoes (usually chukka or jodhpur boots) or on those 105 degree days where I’m in shorts and a polo at home and need to run out to grab something - I’ll slip on some deck shoes that aren’t particularly comfortable.

I’d love to find something casual and comfortable to slip on in place of thongs/flip-flops and deck shoes that I could wear around the yard and for quick errands.

Was it your boy Lattanzi, with that video where a pair was buried, to do a accellerated patina test?

They take them out of the mud after 4 years,

then they resole the pair, then restore the leather uppers and polish them to get the result below.

Notice how rich that leather is? Notice how it is different from other leathers you see from other makers? I think that is the special leather he uses, it is unique. It antiques a special way, that's why l love his shoos the best. A buried shoo.

Vivo’s are extra wide by design. Part of their barefoot philosophy is a wide toebox.
Give them a go.

Why is this necessary? I could certainly understand 1/2 size down just so your toes are touching the front of the shoe, but unless you were training to be a geisha there’s no way that’s necessary.
It is necessary, unfortunately. You are literally using your toes to “grab” the wall and support your weight, so you want your foot to be arched in to get as much traction as possible. You get used to it.

A real modern day geisha you are.

What to wear when riding a tuk tuk in the middle of a pouring summer rain in North Sumatra. Not Lattanzis per se. (Yes Shooey, now you can cry)

I have had 3 bespoke shoes MADE in my life. The rest are MTO/ RTW etc but I think maybe I will consider barefoot bespoke in the future if possible.
Tbh, I wear barefoot shoes over 80- 90 percent of the time now. My normal shoes are special occasion only (weddings, funerals, the odd speaking engagement, *some nicer dates*). In fact, I had a wedding over the past weekend and wore my bespoke MPC (ex JL) black oxfords and I couldn't wait to get out of it.

I have those Ababas and they are the best travel shoes. Btw Vivo aren't that wide for barefoot. I'd consider them moderately wide. However, compared to normal shoes, they are very very wide. In the states, Splay, lems, Xero etc are a quarter to half an inch or so wider than my vivos

At home, I am zero shoes all the way. Then again, all footwear is left at the door outside

Thanks, those don’t look bad and might actually fit my duck feet!

As they should.

Once you get plantar fasciitis your shoeless dreams go the way of the dodo.
100%. Had to move to generations of Air Max. Thank goodness I haven’t been bothered by it for years.

I like barefoot and Munsonesque lasts. I’m wearing my Lems to death

No shoes inside = BDE, eh Shoey?

Don't know what BDE means, but screw that no shoos inside rule. I wear my Silvano Lattanzi shoos from morning to night, and the only time they come off is when l go to bed. I've been to some people's house when shoos must be taken off, and l loathe it; when l walk on their clean floors my socks still get dirty, and then that dirt goes into my beautiful shoos. I now keep a pair of slippers handy when going to homes just in case. The no shoos rule really irks me.

I want to sit on my couch at night and observe my stunning shoos each night, so wearing shoos in the house is well worth it for me.

+ when l was a kid my dad would walk around in the house in his dress shoos, and they were loud and manly sounding. I always wanted to be the same, and now l am. My shoos are loud on the kitchen floor, and l wouldn't want it any other way.....it is the sound of an authoritative MAN moving about the house. Creeping around in socks is something l can't comprehend,it seems so silly and prissy. Yeah, it would be nice to have prestine carpets etc, but l would much rather wear my shoos, the trade-off is well worth it. Most aussies l know don't take off their shoos, and l am sure fxh fxh wouldn't either.

Another barefoot fan! Would love to compare notes.
I mostly wear Vivos, have the Xero sandals, and have tried other brands here and there

I think I’m going to try the Splays, but I wish all these places had a shopfront - I’m still skeptical that that anything not marked ‘for super extra wide duck feet’ will actually fit me. I’d it means I can bin the flip-flops/thongs, I’ll be happy.

Splay says they are comparable to Lems in width/toe box shape. So if you can fit into Lems you can fit into splays. Lems say their width is 2E US.

I think I normally need a 110mm width and it looks like their size 11 is 107, which sockless should work. I’m out of town the moment, but when I get hope I’ll need to measure to see if 11 will be too big on length.
