Hot shoes shuffle: Police try to return thousands of stolen shoes

It was perhaps Melbourne's largest ever hot shoe shuffle - more than 2400 pairs of stolen shoes were moved into Epping Memorial Hall in a bid to find their long-lost owners.

Lonesome cowboy boots, rainbow-laced sneakers and even a pair of motorcycle boots filled the hall in Melbourne's north on Sunday, as police sought to reunite victims of a shoe thief with their lost footwear.

A haul of over 2400 of shoes and boots has been recovered and Victorian Police is trying to get them back to their rightful owners. Video courtesy Victoria Police

Of the more than 2000 pairs on display, by far the most common item was the humble work boot, including one unworn pair of Blundstones still wrapped in their box.

A sea of mustard, tan and black boots spattered with every imaginable shade of mud and dust and concrete and tar offered vital clues as to the trade of their owners.
Police investigating hundreds of reports of shoes stolen from across Melbourne's northern suburbs over the past six years had unearthed the stash of 2416 pairs of stolen shoes in a home in Mernda last year.

Police laid out more than 2000 pairs of shoes for people to search through.

A 43-year-old man was charged with theft and handling stolen goods in November. He was bailed to appear in Heidelberg Magistrates Court on April 13.

Whittlesea Crime Investigation Unit First Constable James Gardiner said it was the most unusual case he had been involved in and he was unlikely to see anything else quite like it again.

It took a team of three police almost three hours to place all of the shoes on display at the hall on Sunday.

Some were still stuffed with socks while others were covered in a mouldy fuzz after months or years locked away in a room.

Liam Riseley was one of the earliest to arrive and soon experienced his Cinderella moment - reunited with a pair of cowboy boots purchased in the US and stolen from his brother's porch in Mernda almost four years ago.

"I heard this was happening and thought I would try my luck, I'm just happy to have them back," he said.

"I also had a pair of work boots stolen but I saw all the boots there and just thought finding them was going to be like a needle in a haystack - there was just such a a ridiculous amount of boots."

Police allege the shoes were taken from the front doors of homes in the Mernda, Doreen, Watsonia North and Craigieburn areas over the past six years.

Nicole Fisher was pleased to have located one of the three missing pairs of work boots stolen from her husband over recent years.

Ms Fisher said her husband worked in construction as a crane driver and they had been upset as the boots all had orthotic insoles and were worth more than $1000.

She said it was "phenomenal" walking into the hall and beginning her hunt. "I can't believe he had all of these, I don't know why you would steal this many boots."

Rachel Harris and her landscape gardener boyfriend David were on the hunt for a pair of stolen workboots.

The pair spent Saturday shopping for new boots but without any success, so were happy to discover his stolen boots at the hall. "We're so relieved he doesn't have to fork out another $200 for a new pair now," she said.
Ravinder Singh was less successful in the search for his wife's missing shoes.

"I was in so much shock when I came in, how can a thief steal thousands of pairs of shoes?"

Anyone who believes their shoes may be among the haul is encouraged to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

World Championships in Shoe Shining – The finalists
2018-03-07
Qualification23-1140x700.jpg

A Frenchman living in England, a Singaporean based in Japan, and a Brasilian who lives in Switzerland – these are the three finalists in the World Championships in Shoe Shining 2018. They will battle it out at the London Super Trunk Show on April 7, where they will have 20 minutes to polish up a shoe as nice as possible.

The championship takes place during the London Super Trunk Show (read all about the event here), hosted on Saturday April 7 at The Music Room, 26 South Molton Lane, in the middle of Mayfair. We gather 10 very interesting shoe exhibitors: Barbanera, Clematis Ginza, J. FitzPatrick Footwear, Jsep, Japan Shoes Export Platform (Matsumoto, Miyagi Kogyo, Kanpekina and Kiten), Mario Bemer, Myrqvist, Norman Vilalta, Paolo Scafora, The Sabot (Meccariello, Yohei Fukuda, Andrés Sendra and Joe Works) and Skolyx (with new Spanish brand TLB). Main partner of the event is the shoe care brand Saphir, partner Mes Chaussettes Rouges. The event is open for everyone between 11.00-19.00, and there’s also places left for the VIP opening for 150 pre-registered already at 10.00 (e-mail supertrunkvip@gmail.com to reserve a spot for you and your friends). Also part of the event is the award ceremony for the World Championships in Shoemaking plus all 43 competition shoes will be displayed.

The World Championships in Shoe Shining, in collaboration with Saphir, is held for the second time this year To qualify one should send in a picture of a well polished shoe (you can read more about the qualification here). We had 27 submissions sent in, from Japan, USA, Singapore, Russia, Canada, China and several European countries. There was once again many really good shine jobs sent in, and hard work for the jury. In the end, these three made it to the final:

Thomas Brunschwig, France/England. Colleague to last year’s finalist Pete Bultitude, the finishing department at Gaziano & Girling has another chance for the win. Thomas has among other things previously worked for Corthay, and is known for his great patina skills. Here he has done a lovely shine focused on the toe area on this pair of brown single monks.

John Chung, Singapore/Japan. This bespoke pair by Yohei Fukuda has been given a very beautiful shine over the whole shoe, with a nice depth to the colour. John Chung is the founder of the famous shoe shine bar Mason & Smith in Singapore, but now lives in Tokyo, Japan, where he is learning shoemaking.

Gabriel Costa Peres, Portugal/Switzerland. Without a doubt there’s an impressive mirror shine achieved on this pair of old John Lobb Paris shoes. Gabriel works for the shoe store Brogues Shoes in Geneva, where apart from serving customers is their shoe shining specialist, and is known for his Instagram account L’Art Du Glacage.

Hopefully many of you can come to London for the Super Trunk Show, and see the big final! You find the Facebook event for the day here.

Over the years I have been guilty of spending excessive time polishing shoes and getting mirror shines. Some legendary efforts have been 8 hour mirror polishing sessions on one pair of shoes with a total of 20 + hours on one pair done over a three week period.

Eventhough there are advantages to SOME well polished shoes and some mirror shines on dark formal calfskin shoes, l still find it alittle silly to make a competition out of it where people travel the world to see who can create the most shiny shoe in a limited period of time. Eventhough l am all for the occasional shoo party and polish session, I really think people need to get a life and find something more interesting to do. The idea of having a competition is the thing which puts me off.

Anyway, here are some Berluti shoo parties.

Ok, that’s just a bridge too far.

20 hours mirror shines are excessive, but sometimes I have wanted to see how far I could take it. I wanted the world's greatest mirror shine (easy to get carried away when the mood strikes me). Sometimes my shines have been amazing, especially with navy blue and black shoes. And remember, when you do a marathon session you never need to do another marathon effort again because only a once yearly wax up is needed of only short duration. But remember, once a marathon waxing is initially done the shoes will keep really clean and polished with just a quick buffing up, it is the ultimate protection, the time is never wasted. AND when you really wax the shoe well you can actually lock in the moisture in SOME shoes leathers so the shoes won't dry out.

But my thoughts are....mirror shines are about the beauty and glory of the shine, and never should it be about a competition and the glory of winning.

Why spend 8 hours straight on a shoe? Because when l first get a shoe l won't rest until it looks exactly how l want it to be, and if that means making a sacrifice for perfection in shine, then so be it! If it is a dark shoe l will sit there all day and shine shine shine until it sparkles like a diamond masterpiece. But NEVER am l going to do it to try and beat another man, my aim is to get the finest shoo shine l can possibly get, and if it ends up being the most shiny shoo in the history of the world then that is a bonus. Dark browns, burgundy, navy blues and blacks need to be like mirrors...only the best shines will be accepted.

Mirror shines. Anyone can do it with patience. No need for a competition.

Yes, you can use your shoes as a mirror to clean your teeth if they are done well. I used my Edward Green to polish my teeth once.

Not mine, but mine are just as shiny.

not the mirror shines, the shoo gala with butlers serving shoe care cleaning materials. that was just creepy.

The only time I indulged in a 'marathon polishing session' I ended up with contact dermatitis which spread all the way up my arms, so I stick to a quick 60 second buff these days.

I think I must have caught something off shooey last time we met. Today I opened a cupboard and found 4 x pairs of shoes/boots I'd forgotten I'd had.

I know many of these but not all of them. Some I would not be interested in. They are all manufacturers shops of course. No mention of John Rushton in Wimpole Street. He is possibly the most informed shop manager and least biased as he is not limited to a single brand.
https://vimeo.com/24528950

Also no mention that neither Lobb nor Edward Green show the prices on their displayed shoes.

At the bottom end Blackmans of Cheshire Street. Cheap stuff and occasional quality bargains like half price Sanders playboys. Corblimey Cockney salesman to entertain the hipsters.

Berluti comes to Melbourne

Instinct told me to google "berluti australia", and suddenly there it was. I immediately telephoned Berluti and was told they moved to Collins Street in September last year.

An otr wholecut is $2,800, and to celebrate l read the 25 page berluti thread at S.F last night with great delight. None-the-less, the otr is not the most inspiring because they are not made with the beautiful detail of other shoes. The make is very plain, but the co,ours are great.

More beautiful berluti colours in otr.

Of course i'd probably be reluctant to pay $2,800 for ort, BUT BUT BUT if bespoke were ever offered i'd be tempted to get a heavily antiqued green 2 eyelet derby or a heavy antiqued fire engine red 2 eyelet derby. Now THAT would be a dream, but probably a $10,000 dream in Australia, ouch.

I looked at the prices of the clothing on the site. RIDICULOUS!!!!

Now if l could somehow manage to connect up bespoke customer from Harrolds and Double Monk with Berluti I reckon we could get enough customers for a bespoke show. In recent years there has also been a MASSIVE increase in rich chinese migrants here, so if they are made aware of Berluti l am sure they could sustain the market well. There are far more chinese in our city than Australians now, and that is why shops like Gucci, Dior etc were built. Most aussies won't buy that stuff, but the chinese and other migrants will.

I have the chinese media contacts, l know how to reach that market. The real issue is that no-one really wears great shoos in Melbourne. Some men will wear good clothes, but they neglect the footwear. Gotta hatch out a plan here and get shoo kings top Berluti for a bespoke program.

Love the green and purple pairs here. Still, G&G deco with the world class patina service would be far better in terms of antiquing and quality of shoo.
Berluti 28.webp

I can well understand why people would buy Berluti, they would be fun shoos, and for some people the brand would put them `in the club'. I think it's truly wonderful to have a few fun shoos with crazy colouring. Haven't been able to get Berluti off my mind for two days, it's been hard going. Amazing dreams too, especially about Berluti bespoke, but wayyy too intense and exciting. Gotta stop thinking about it.

Only rich fashion victims would wear yellow and green shoes.
Pthh. Nothing quite like a beautifully antiqued forest green shoo. I have one and it's always a treat to wear, possibly my favourite shoo ever! It's made by BIG Johnny Lobb. I love coloured shoos.

I had wanted antiqued green shoos for so long (14 - 15 years) that it was painful not owning a pair. I ached and ached for a pair but never had access to them.

My green Johnny Lobb below looks far far FARRR better in person. It looks so amazing that my mind never ceases to be totally blown away each time l see it. I pulled it out last night just to check it out, l was wowed by the sight of it. When that green shoo is out in the sun it blows minds sky high.

Coloured shoos are so worth it. You should see that plum coloured Lobb in real life since l have added red to it, it is beyond mind blowing....has red tinges in it and is like a work of art. The navy shoo is still at it's best 60 - 90 minutes before dark because it brings on a deep rich dark blue that glows, it looks so amazing that it is difficult to look away, the beauty of it blows my mind like little else.

Those coloured John Lobbs are the best thing l ever bought.
