My father just bought something on Amazon and it went to his Microsoft e-mail account and the notification automatically created an entry in Outlook calendar (all online still) that the shipment was expected on X day. He asked me how to turn that off.

My father is okay with automation but not okay with giving up his privacy. He was an avid fan of Terminator showing what happens if everything is connected. I reckon in last decade's Battlestar Galactica he'd vouch for computers that aren't networked.

I avoid using virtual assistants because I don't want to contribute to building some orphan or surrogate child.

I fear the day when I can't decide on a Christmas gift or a movie or bar and Siri, Cortana or Google Now directs me.
 
Okay, I guess I'm waiting for the new Surface Pro then.

I'm trying to get it as a gift for someone. I didn't see a point getting the current Surface Pro 4 if one was coming out in six months so now it's going to be a Christmas gift. My aunt bought one last year. She says it's a bit heavy and warm for tablet usage.

That said I thought everyone skips the Windows Store and uses their Windows 10 device as a regular desktop.
 
Is it just me, but anything other than an Apple in the laptop world seems to only last 18 months before looking like shite and having issues with battery life, keys not working, etc, etc. At least with Apple they seem to last for ages.

It is just you. My apple battery was useless after a year. The new Apple computers have been the laughingstock of the PC world for the past half year as well. Very low specs, very high prices.
 
They're all made in China. What do you folks expect?

I bought this Lenovo one that she wanted two or three years ago for her and she keeps telling me it's slow like molasses now. That's why I thought at least the Surface Pro might buy another six to twelve months.

that's why this surface laptop is exciting to people. it seems to be the first solid competitor to apple in the performance market that has looks as well. lenovo's always strong but their computers are generally very business looking.
 
Might have to give it a go then, the chips in this HP of mine are just about frazzled with late night porn and foodstuff fallen through the keyboard.

Always used a DELL Precision for laptop and HP for desktop. Would never use Apple. Not powerful enough amongst other compatibility problems.
 
I've just put my order in:

Microsoft surface notebook
Screen 13,5 inch
Processor Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB
256 GB SSD drive
Webcam
Wifi
Windows 10 Pro
 
It arrived and was set-up today by the IT people. Looks and feels pretty impressive, not sure will have much use for the screen pen though. The new Microsoft operating system is a bit quirky and also the taller screen ratio feels odd at first, but should I suspect, show it's improved credentials once I start to work with it. The ability to detach the screen and use as standard iPad/Notebool type may come in handy for controlling the Bluesound Vault.

I've just played around with it for a bit and it's super, super fast!

It doesn't have fabric, but everything else fits: detachable, that new operating system, pen, etc.

The fabric spec strikes me as a gimmick for the weak and feeble minded. Wouldn't work on the Dutch either.
 
Okay now I want to buy it for Christmas. I was convinced it was just a traditional laptop. Not sure I can wait till the next Surface Pro comes out if I want it under a tree.
 
It ain't fabric. It's alcantara. The same material sports car dashes and seats are made out of.

The surface pro and the surface book are two different models. The book is a laptop with detachebale screen, the pro is an iPad competitor, except it can do much more than an iPad.
 
I've got the Book version. Now all I need to figure out is how to remove all the spyware in Windows 10.

Isn't that like I'm a cordless screwdriver and I can also drill if you put a drill bit, or I'm a cordless drill and I can also unscrew things with the right attachment?

Anyway, I'm just going to guess the Surface Pro will be more expensive when it debuts at Christmas. And the keyboards were always on top of the original purchase price.

There will be good deals during Christmas time. I had $350 off last Christmas.
 
The taller ratio of the screen is a winner on Surface Book. A good innovation as it gives you more of a work space than with a similar sized laptop with the usual ratio.
 
Anyone here using Microsoft Power BI?

That Surface Book Pro has an awful mouse on the keyboard, overly sensitive which spoils an otherwise sensible and aesthetically pleasing design.
 
I just received a new Windows 10 laptop as a gift. I've been using Windows 10 but it's on a PC that has been continuously upgraded since the days of Windows Vista. Anyway, this is the first time I'm using my Microsoft.com account as the primary login. Previously I just had a local account and password. How many ways am I supposed to be able to authenticate to the computer? There's the password. Then a PIN. Then it asks me to set up fingerprint sensor. And now every so often Microsoft is nagging me to install the Authenticator app on my mobile so I can use that to log in. People can't remember a single password these days?

I was shocked to see a well known, well-funded, high speed low-drag intelligence agency uses paint to draw-up org charts for field deployments. When I asked why they don’t use Visio, the response was that every computer, no matter how secured, has Paint installed. So any field agent can edit it on the fly. Low tech ftw.

That sounds painful. What if you make a mistake? You can only undo one brush stroke. I would have assumed abusing PowerPoint would be preferable.

Didn't I read somewhere some nuclear bunker still has diskettes or something?
