The Football/Soccer Thread

Either Italy advances into the World Cup or Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.

'Godfather of Gegenpressing'

"Innovative ideas included a countdown clock in training that allows players eight seconds to win the ball back and 10 to score a goal. Sleep experts were brought in, as was a Soccerbot machine that simulates previous matches to help players improve their cognitive ability.

Rangnick believes in 'developing quicker minds rather than quicker feet' and would demand players arrive 90 minutes before training to undergo tests that allow staff to know how hard and for how long they should exercise that day."

Okay. Good luck getting Ronaldo to do high press.

"On the training ground, Rangnick often takes a hands-on approach at first before delegating to the trusted members of staff he has handpicked, and has previously employed an army of specialists to cover every eventuality.

He has started this process at United, appointing former USA international and ex-New York Red Bulls coach Chris Armas as his assistant and adding another former colleague to the staff in sports psychologist Sascha Lense, who he worked with at Schalke and Leipzig."

ex New York Red Bulls then ex Toronto FC where he was run out of town for his infatuation with high press when none of the squad could pull it off and his constant habit of putting players out of position. Why don't you play CM when you were LB all your life except for middle school.

Raineri out and Woy returns to be in charge at Watford.

Leicester seemed many moons ago.

Balotelli called up for Italy. Now you know Mancini is desperate to qualify for the World Cup.

MLS season starts this weekend. Not sure what to expect from my club...14 players remaining from last year.

"A sale of the club is currently on hold under the government-imposed restrictions - a move intended to stop Abramovich from benefiting financially. But without a sale, things could get tough, quickly. How bad it will get, nobody knows.

We do know the sanctions on Abramovich will impact every part of Chelsea, from top to bottom. Wages, transfers, contracts, sponsors, the number of fans in the stands, the non-playing staff and even how players travel to matches."

I'm not a Chelsea supporter but this is absurd. I'm sure Tuchel and his men are secret Putin supporters.

Oops. Canada has yet to clinch a World Cup berth with their loss to Costa Rica.

I've been to some of the qualifying games so it's not like I haven't been cheering for them. I was barely alive when they last qualified so I have no connection to that squad.

This morning when I was close to the stadium the conditions were horrific but it's sunny and we're up 2 nil. I'm following online.

4 nil. Qualified.

Time to go to Qatar for the World Cup. Must admit it never crossed my mind to attend in person.

No issues at all...

Cristiano Ronaldo...course you shouldn't need a hat trick to beat the likes of Norwich.

My Italian colleague reminded me AC Milan is at the top of the table.

Erik ten Hag appointed as saviour of Manchester United. At least I won't need to hear about the Rangnick crew now.

City melt down means it's Liverpool and Real Madrid for Champions League final.

That is brilliant. :lol

“During the Queen's appearance, a choir of celebrities including Sir David Jason, Harry Redknapp, Sir Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw and Felicity Kendal took part in a mass rendition of God Save The Queen.”

When did ‘Arry go from manager to celebrity?

Jack Wilshere retires. I still remember when he was a teen and his first appearance for Arsenal.

This man is a year younger than Ronaldo and was supposed to supplant Ronaldo at United. He looks a good decade older.

Hasn't he been going downhill since he was 30?

A deity stuck in the body of a plumber. The greatest footballer these shores have produced in a generation, reduced to a lumbering oaf wandering around the Old Trafford turf, like a tired dad looking for his car keys. A man left playing a game that hates him, every week for eternity. The sadness of King Wayne, dying disgracefully in front of our very eyes.

Rooney's lifestyle choices were always horrendous - for an athlete. He was always out of shape, drank too much and smoked in the off season.

He also never escaped his upbringing I guess. Croxteth is a shit hole. Literally and metaphorically and all that it entails.

I didn't RSVP and missed getting a chance to go to the welcome event for Federico Bernarderschi. When I tuned in on YouTube to the last two questions I realised we apparently have Italian journos here because the questions were all in Italian and Bernarderschi replied in Italian. With Domenico Crisicito barely able to say our club slogan All for One and Lorenzo Insigne needing a translator I would say the coaching staff will need to start speaking in Italian soon.

Watching a BT sport feed of a domestic cup game happening in Pacific Time. This is what happens when you sell the rights to a no name online broadcaster.

UEFA now investigating. Is it illegal to chant the name of another country's head of state?

Already Community Shield. Feels like yesterday the league just ended. Now we also have the World Cup in the desert during the middle of the season.
