^Well, one of the fundamental rules of gun safety is: "Always be sure of your target and backstop before shooting." The mother obviously failed to identify her target when she killed her daughter.

It seems that more or less everyone* can buy a gun at US gun markets without background checks.
* as long as they are white and good Christians, I guess. Not sure that qualifies as a proper background check...
I did some pistol (Walther P1) and other standard Bundeswehr weapons (G 3 and MG 3) shooting when I was in the German forces.
I managed to hit the targets, but I'm sure it matters under what circumstances. Non of the static targets fired back, so less adrenaline involved.
I imagine that unless you have proper military or police training it will be hard to take out the "bad guy", while he/ she is spraying bullets in your direction.
It doesn't translate well into English, but one of my drill officer used to say:
"Immer auf die Beine schießen:
Stirnbein,
Nasenbein,
Brustbein,

Armed anti-government protesters have taken over a building in a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon, accusing officials of unfairly punishing ranchers who refused to sell their land.
One of them is Ammon Bundy, the 40-year-old son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who is well-known for anti-government action.
He spoke by phone to CNN Sunday morning. Asked several times what he and those with him want, he answered in vague terms, saying that they want the federal government to restore the "people's constitutional rights."
"This refuge -- it has been destructive to the people of the county and to the people of the area," he said.
"People need to be aware that we've become a system where government is actually claiming and using and defending people's rights, and they are doing that against the people."

The group is occupying part of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns after gathering outside for a demonstration supporting Dwight and Steven Hammond, father-and-son ranchers who were convicted of arson.
Prosecutors said the Hammonds set a fire that burned about 130 acres in 2001, to cover up poaching. They were sentenced to five years in prison.
The Hammonds, who are set to turn themselves in Monday afternoon, have said they set the fire to reduce the growth of invasive plants and to protect their property from wildfires, CNN affiliate KTVZ reported.
The Hammonds have been clear in that they don't want help from the Bundy group.
"Neither Ammon Bundy nor anyone within his group/organization speak for the Hammond family," the Hammonds' attorney W. Alan Schroeder wrote to Harney County Sheriff David Ward.
CNN law enforcement analyst Art Roderick, a retired U.S. marshal who investigated anti-government militias for years, warned that Bundy's call for supporters to join him might "turn into a bad situation."
"What's going to happen hopefully (is) ... we don't go out there with a big force, because that's what they're looking for," he said. "The last thing we need is some type of confrontation."
He said that over the years, law enforcement has learned how to handle a situation like this; one that hasn't erupted in violence and in which a law may be broken, but there's no immediate threat to anyone's life.
The best approach now, Roderick said, is to wait the group out and to figure out how to bring a peaceful end to the standoff.

St Cloud: Police in Florida say a mother mistook her daughter for an intruder and shot her dead.
Sergeant Denise Roberts, of the St Cloud police, said the mother was asleep when she heard someone enter her home late on Tuesday.
The mother told police she heard footsteps approaching quickly so she fired a single shot. She then discovered the person was her 27-year-old daughter. The daughter was taken to a hospital where she died.
St Cloud police officials say they aren't releasing the names of the mother or daughter since a person in their household is in law enforcement, and Florida law permits the withholding of identities in such cases.
Detectives are investigating the case but say so far the mother's story matches the evidence.
It comes as a new report confirmed that violence in America never takes a holiday.
Twenty-seven people were killed and 63 injured in shooting incidents on Christmas Day, according to the Gun Violence Archive. This tally does not include people who shot themselves in suicide.
The number of Americans killed in gun homicides on Christmas Day is comparable to the number of people killed in gun homicides in an entire year in places like Australia or Britain, and equal to the total number of people killed in gun homicides in an entire year in Austria, New Zealand, Norway, Slovenia, Estonia, Bermuda, Hong Kong and Iceland, combined.
The dead included the parents of a young child who were shot during a robbery in Columbus, Ohio; a Texas grandfather, whose 73-year-old wife says she shot him for "continuous marital issues and infidelities"; a young couple killed in their vehicle in the early morning hours near Augusta, Maine; and the owner of a barbershop in Alabama who was known as "a strong voice against crime" in the community, according to news reports.
At least two of the Christmas Day shootings qualified as mass shooting incidents with four or more people shot. In one, a two-year-old girl and three teenagers were injured in a shooting in a high-crime neighbourhood in Jacksonville, Florida. Later that night in Mobile, Alabama, four teenagers were shot by two gunmen outside a movie theatre.
So far this year, the US has had an average of about 36 gun fatalities and 73 gun injuries each day, according to the Gun Violence Archive. So the Christmas Day tally represents something of a temporary de-escalation in the violence, but not a huge one.
This year has brought renewed attention to the problem of mass shooting incidents in America. But the spate of Christmas Day violence is a reminder that many more people are killed and injured in a relentless daily drumbeat of gun crime that barely makes the headlines.

Absolutely.
Also, there appears to be a huge difference in the way that this is being handled, and the way that the protests in Ferguson were handled.
In the case of Ferguson, a crowd of unarmed black people who were peacefully protesting in public were surrounded by heavily-armed, paramilitary police, including snipers, who were accompanied by large, military surplus armoured cars.
In this case, a group of armed white people who have taken over a government building are simply being monitored.
On the one hand, perhaps that means that law enforcement have learned that you don't always use a sledgehammer to crack a nut and that sending in paramilitary teams can have negative repercussions (see Ruby Ridge as an example). On the other hand, I can't help but think that the lack of a strong response thus far is mainly because they're white, rather than black and/or Muslim.

The 45-year-old man was licensed to carry the concealed Glock pistol that fired one shot, grazing his leg, but the weapon did not have a safety, theJournal-News reported.
Customers reportedly didn’t hear the blast from the bathroom in the Hamilton restaurant, according to WMOH.
The man walked out of the restaurant and went to the hospital as a precaution. He was not seriously injured and won’t be charged for his fast food firearm flub.

Woman accidentally kills self adjusting bra holster

A Michigan woman accidentally shot herself to death last month while adjusting the .22-caliber revolver in her bra holster, police said Wednesday.
Christina Bond, 55, was struck in an eye in her St. Joseph home on New Year's Day. She died the next day in a Kalamazoo hospital, where she had been airlifted.
"She was having trouble adjusting her bra holster, couldn't get it to fit the way she wanted it to," St. Joseph Public Safety Director Mark Clapp told the Kalamazoo Gazette. "She was looking down at it and accidentally discharged the weapon."
No other details were released. Police are awaiting the full autopsy report.
Bond, a mother of two sons, was a bookkeeper and officer administrator for the Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency, and had previously had run the office for the Road to Life Church, The Herald-Palladium reported. She also ministered to inmates at the Berrien County Jail.
St. Joseph is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, north of the Indiana line.

As I understand it, most of the people killed by toddlers were the toddlers themselves, who accidentally shot themselves. If the toddlers' parents are members of churches which practice infant baptism, which comprise the majority of American Christians (I'm pretty sure), then toddlers would be Christians.

^The term "snub nose" is customarily applied only to revolvers with 2- or 2 1/2-inch barrels. The pistol in question was described as a "small automatic handgun." During my 62+ years of immersion in the world of firearms, I have never heard a snub-nosed revolver described as a "cutie."

^Kind of an odd story, given the course of the wound channel. It seems to me that the little girl would have to assume a very contorted position to shoot herself in this manner. This death might bear further investigation. Most .45s are pretty big guns, and I'd have to assume a very awkward position to shoot myself laterally through the chest, and I'm a big man, a shade under 6'3".

^Of course, the truth about that legislation is that you cannot sue gun or ammo manufacturers for making guns and ammunition that work as they are supposed to.
On the other hand, if I am shooting a gun and it blows up and mutilates my hand or sends a chunk of steel flying into my eye, I can sue for damages if it is the fault of the gun or ammo maker.

The white bloke who had two hand guns and an assault(?) rifle approaching the RNC security perimeter to demonstrate his rights was a bit asinine. Why pull this stunt this week out of 51 other available weeks? Also I assume if he was black and kitted out the same he'd be shot before he got close.

I don't have much sympathy for this "open carry" movement. As the most accomplished mankiller I ever knew, Jim Cirillo, who killed 11 men in stand-up gunfights, once remarked to me, "The first time you want an adversary to know you're armed is when he catches your bullet!"
