The Movie Preview, Review, & Recommendation Thread pt. II

Tropic Thunder on Amazon Prime. Robert Downey Junior playing the Aussie who is playing a black man is hilarious. And the Tom Cruise cameo is an absolute cracker.

"Otherwise I'm gonna have to head down there and I will rain down an un-Godly fucking firestorm upon you! You're gonna have to call the fucking United Nations and get a fucking binding resolution to keep me from fucking destroying you. I'm talking scorched earth, motherfucker! I will massacre you! I WILL FUCK YOU UP!"

Danger Close.

At 1:29:10 you can see my mum’s cousin being shot off his APC coming to relieve Delta Co. He died of his wounds six days later.

Aside from the personal connection, I did enjoy the film. It’s mostly action
, but there is a little story to it and character development.

We studied Long Tan a lot when I was in the army and then my dad wrote a chapter about it in one of his books. I’d say this was a fair portrayal of the people and events. The gear seems about right for the era, though someone shoulda taught them the correct fold for a giggle hat.

As an aside, the APC my cousin rode was recently restored and put on display:

For someone who is in a high pressure role with your history I would have thought a comedy would be more of what you want to unwind but to each their own.

The platform has an interesting premise and is fairly well made, but ultimately just went down (hahah). I was expecting some sort of overt societal metaphor or morality play and I stead the ending was far more ambiguous.

Richard Kelly's Southland Tales, lost a shed load at the box office back in 2007, but from this perspective, very prescient to our times i.e. total surveillance states, IT moguls gone insane, neo-Marxism, shallowness of celebrity culture etc.

I am watching Les Miserables on Amazon Prime.

Louis Malle's 1973 documentary Human, too human about a Citreon car factory. Well worth a watch for the lack of PPE, the production line heavily reliance on people, smoking in the paint shop, the number of women in the labour force and the crap cars they were making.

I re-watched this on Sunday evening, via Netflix:

"Laputa: Castle in the Sky", directed by Miyazaki Hayao of Studio Ghibli. This is really one of Studio Ghibli's masterpieces - an absolutely gorgeous, hand-drawn film with humour, pathos and adventure.

It's hard for me to choose my top few Ghibli movies, but this would definitely be amongst them, along with Porco Rosso, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and My Neighbour Totoro.

They're all pretty amazing and The Cat Returns is a favorite of my kids, although they're leaving all of this behind for TickTok and Youtubers these days.

Downloaded that Old Movies app to the television, think it picks up out of copyright movies off Youtube. Watched the Sinatra vehicle The Joker Is Wild, slightly slow to get going, but Sinatra's comedy timing and acting is spot-on. Worth a watch if you like Sinatra and comedy stand-up.

Ophelia took a few liberties but managed to breath new life into an old story without totally jumping the shark. 8/10.

I watched that Chef movie with Jon Favreau. Interestingly I watched after watching The Chef show. Now I finally understand what the El Jefe logo for the show meant.

Still confused how he is hitched to Sofia Vergara

He wasn't - they were divorced. Perhaps even more incredibly, though, at the beginning of the movie he was seeing Scarlett Johansson's character!

Yeah - what did they see in him? There were some interesting cameos including Robert Downey Jr. & Dustin Hoffman.

3 flicks today:

I thought that had seen this before, but it may have been another Pacino movie.

Pacino plays a sorta retired police officer who can't leave the past behind. When a series of murders starts to take place, a past colleague contacts him for help/advice.

As the title states, the killer "hangs" his victims and leaves clues for the next murder. Brittany Snow plays a reporter who gets access to the police force and tags along while Al and his reunited partner(Urban) search for the killer.

To be honest, this was not horrible. It was worth a watch. Pacino isn't Michael Corolone, Serpico, Tony Montana or Carlito...but the movie itself holds itself together until the end. 2.5/5.

Jeez.....who looks better in a dress and heels than Ms. Chastain?

She plays the title role...Molly Bloom...who goes from a "failed" potential olympic skier to running the biggest underground poker game in the USA.

How? Well, she gets a job at an investment firm and a guy there runs a somewhat successful underground game. He asks Molly to help out and she learns the ropes(the game/recruiting/hosting/etc)...and after a dispute, decides to go out on her own.

She uses her knowledge and the funds that she saved to expand. Little does she know that some of the big fishes she has playing in her games are "connected". The Feds come calling.

Not a bad watch. It seems that Ms. Chastain's past flicks all have her narrating in the background(Zero Dark Thirty/Miss Sloane...both of which I really liked.) This was similar.

But damm...she is a pleasure to look at!

3/5.

I was really looking forward to seeing this(and Molly's Game). I was surprised when I checked Netflix today and it was available.

Adam Sandler plays a NYC/diamond district dealer who is in over his head in sports bets. He has several people after him. How does he feel that he can pull himself out of this situation? He gets his hands on an "uncut" opal stone from Africa and is looking to sell it for upwards of a million bucks(easier said than done!)

Kevin Garnett(NBA player) makes an appearance as...Kevin Garnett...and he may be interested in purchasing the rock. Sandler "loans" him the stone while Garnett is in town and than starts the downward spiral vs auctioning it off as planned.

The alluring Julia Fox plays Sandler's mistress. He is married with kids and Fox stands by him when it seems that he has no other way out of this situation.

I was just about to say that everything was tying itself up nicely...when........

Do watch.

I know that there was uproar re Sandler not getting an Academy nomination. I mean....he was born in Brooklyn(NY) and basically played a NY'er. The movie itself was ok. 2hours+. Not sure that the uproar was warranted.

^ Good reviews!

I saw Molly's Game pop up on Netflix recently and was thinking of watching it. Based on your review, I might give it a go this weekend.

That reminds me of Hugh Jackman being emcee and being snubbed at the Oscars: "In Tropic Thunder, Robert Downey, Jr., ladies and gentlemen. Robert, who's an American, played an Australian playing an African American, nominated. Whereas me, I'm an Australian who played an Australian in a movie called Australia."

I would say Sandler's chances weren't very high.

He(Sandler) did a good job. Very good. Just not sure that it warranted a nomination.

The Decline. After a fatal accident, Canadian survivalists attending a training camp fight for their lives.

good pace and nicely choreographed action and violence.

Nothing memorable but still entertaining.

Also check out ^(Netflix).

The Decline reminded me of Calibre.

Summary: 2 friends go on a weekend hunting trip. All is AOK....UNTIL an accident takes place. The friends scramble to get back home. Worth a watch.

Caught ^ last night.

A young female cop joins an existing team and is pulled into several cases at once(she gets respect after helping out on a serial killer case at the start of the movie.)

One involves the team lead and the murder of his wife and the subsequent murder of the young man who was identified. She is asked by the higher ups to spy on the team lead and try to come up with evidence that he was responsible for the young man's death.

The 2nd involves the murder of a young lady from a prominent family. Her roommate, boyfriend, etc are all suspects. It isn't what it looks like. Or is it?

At just under 2hrs long. This ran more like a mini-series than a standalone movie. I realized after that there is a followup, Perdita, that I may try to catch over the wknd.

They could have easily broken this up into 45 min eps and added the followup movie on the end.

love-wedding-repeat-1.jpg

Caught this on Netflix just now.

A couple's wedding is overrun with multiple circumstances that attempt to derail it: Past ex's. Infidelity. Roofies. Etc.

The bride's brother attempts to save the day all the while trying to re-connect with the friend of his sis that he met a few years ago.

It attempts to be that goofball comedy that just never did it for me. Olivia Munn, Frieda Pinto and Eleanor Tomlinson could not save this. I kept waiting for it to get funny. It really didn't. I did watch it all the way without stopping. Maybe it was because I was drinking.

Solid 1/5.

It really doesn't get any better than these two playing Sherlock Holmes(Rathbone) and Dr Watson(Bruce.)

In this caper, Holmes is hired to accompany the owner(Lady Margaret) of a famous diamond on a train ride from London to Scotland. There are bunch of characters on the train, as well as Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard. Some of those characters, excluding the Inspector, may be looking to pocket the diamond.

After Lady Margaret's son is murdered and the diamond stolen, Holmes and Watson must navigate/question the complex personalities who all deny having anything to with the murder/swiping the diamond.

As only Holmes can do, he sees what others don't...and is a step ahead of everyone else.

I love these SH movies. I have a boxed CD set with all of the Rathbone/Bruce movies. These are also widely available on Youtube(that's where I watched this one yesterday.)

Clive and his crew decide to rob a NYC bank in the middle of the day. They arrive dressed as painters and have all of the customers/staff don the same painters garb. Why?

Denzel(NYPD hostage negotiator) and his partner arrive on scene and try to defuse the situation. He tries to figure out Clive's long game.

But Clive is smart. He always seems to be one step ahead of the police. He has a plan which includes sucking down pina colodas in a hot tub with 6 girls named Amber and Tiffany.

Jodie(crisis specialist) gets called in by the bank chairman to help secure some personal items in one of the safe deposit boxes at the bank that would damage him. Her game plan is simple: earn her fee at any cost.

Clive is a soft spoken crook and the heist may not be what it seems to be! He carries this movie IMO and the ending is fun!

This winds together nicely as Denzel + Jodie battle Clive + company. It is a bit long at just over 2 hours, but that didn't bother me(I have seen it multiple times.)

A Spike Lee Joint!

3.5/5.
