Currently rereading Alan Sillitoe's Saturday Night Sunday Morning and I wanted to watch the film which I haven't seen since 1986/87 when we had the Angry Young Men as part of our O Level English syllabus. Haven't been able to find the full film on Youtube, but I've got the opening with the monologue which is classic of it's kind:

Started both of these over the wknd. Didn't finish either....yet.

-The Woman in the Window is a LIGHT take on the Hitchcock classic, Rear Window. Basically(from the 20-30 min that I caught), a woman sees what she believes is a murder in the townhouse across from hers.

That's all I got! I fell asleep at that point, but the reviews really roast the flick. I will try to get through it over the long wknd.

-I am All Girls focuses on the trafficking on young girls and follows a detective as she realizes that a serial killer is targeting those doing the trafficking.

This has potential. I also fell asleep while watching this after a long day. I will revisit this before TWITW.
 
Army of the dead on Netflix - Zach Snyder is a terrible director. This movie is all over the place and the story really makes no coherent sense. Would pass on this one unless you’re a hardcore fan of the genre.

Awful film but I am slogging my way through it for Sweetbitter girl (who should not be doing action or comedy films, based on this).

Black Summer the TV series is good. Dead Set, another series, wasn’t bad.

As far as movies, the remake of Dawn of the Dead and 30 Days After set the bar pretty high. I can’t think of anything that’s topped them since.

Edit: I Am Legend was ok, for a remake.

Does anyone else care or feel excited for the Silmarillion series? The second age in the books has some very interesting events including the Founding, Rise and Fall of Numenor, the forging of the Rings of power and is the time period where Sauron really shines and does some of his best and most devious work.

I am keenly interested to see if they will incorporate some of the stories from the first age because it is my favourite section of the all books. I've said in the past that if they just told the stories verbatim it would be perfect and hopefully they will restrain themselves from adding the phoney Elf meets Dwarf love story stuff that we saw in the later Hobbit movies.
 
Things Seem and Heard. Starts as a predicable formula with young couple moving into haunted house and then takes a turn. The husband is a bastard and the ghosts are trying to save the wife. The lovely Amanda Seyfried. Weak ending. 7/10

Starry Eyes. Slow burn indie horror. Watching this now and haven’t finished, but it definitely has my attention. EDIT: did not end well.

I always got this confused with Taps....but after starting it last night...I realized that I never caught it.

Based in the 1950's, a standout quarterback(Brendan Fraser) from a small town gets recruited to attend a top flight prep school. His sights area set on Harvard after he finishes out the year.

He forms a tight bond with the other popular students and his roommate. All is AOK!

He then starts to fall for the "girl" of one of his crew(Matt Damon). She also falls for him. That crew member was supposed to play quarterback, but has lost that spot and his "girl". Big deal, right?

Nope....see...Brendan Fraser is Jewish...a BIG no-no at the school and during those times! After Matt Damon accidentally finds out that secret, he exposes BF and most everyone turns on him.

What happens next is a display of how someone is looked at based on their color/faith/sexual preference/etc. The way that this film captures that still existing element of society is why it is definitely worth a watch!

Emmanuelle was the first, and only porno film, to break it big in the UK. According to my father, everyone went to watch it at mainstream cinemas.

I remember a mate came back from the States in the early 90s with a load of porn video catalogues and some videos from the USA. It was a revelation: porn with a reasonable budget and some wooden acting, but the lighting and camera angles were just right.

Anyone seen Cloudstreet, Australian 6 hour mini-series from a few years back?

I haven't, but ask because I'm reading the novel, exceptional in style and story, Googled it and found it was filmed, to good, but local Aussie, reviews. Got a used copy on line, yet to arrive and just as well since I haven't finished the book. Lemme know if you read or saw this. Or like this corn cob pipe I'm trying to light. Thank ye.

This was a real surprise that I stumbled on. Bullied teen released her alter ego from the mirror who does everything she wants. Well acted and beautifully filmed. A slow but steady pace with a simmering sense of foreboding leading to the climax. 8/10.
 
Picked up 3 more dvd from the thrift, if you wait long enough it usually arrives, except for Dark Crystal, that one still eludes me. Anyway:

Evil Dead, Dark City and Highlander.

Started this last night.

After part of a very remote diamond mine collapses, the good guys need to get rescue equipment out to the location.

Problem? It's cold as F and the only route is by truck(s) over a frozen ocean. The team and their leader definitely need a particular set of driving skills to pull this off!

Liam N is that leader and along with a few other misfits, they attempt the challenge.

I fell asleep so no review...not even a partial. I didn't fall asleep due to the movie, just had a long wknd.

Will check it out later.

Ok...I finished this last night.

Absolutely nothing special.

LN has cemented his role as the underdog slash overcomer of bad guys. This flick is no different.

The Tomorrow War: big budget Terminator meets Starship Troopers with the good guy from Parks and Rec. A real surprise and a lot of fun. 8/10.

I actually watched this for the very first time last night!

American Me tells of the founding and rise of the Mexican Mafia, aka La Eme, in the streets of California, and more importantly, in the prison systems back in the 1950's - 1980's.

EJO directed and stars in the film as Montoya Santana, one of the founders of the gang and the leader. As a teen, the gang is founded to protect the small group of friends from other predators in the streets. In prison, the gang multiplies and runs several facilities.....and is feared!

Montoya runs shit! But after getting paroled, he starts to see the err of his ways and certain gang members start to feel he is getting soft! He heads back to prison on a violation and...well....you know gangs! They aren't interested in reform!

Very solid flick. Very solid soundtrack!

It's basically the same story told from different perspectives, but also worth a watch!
 
I watched Dirty Harry, which was better than I remembered. But Magnum Force is terrible. One of the worst movies I've watched from beginning to end.

Also watched And Justice for All. It reminds me of Serpico to see Pacino play a young idealist. Nice characters and acting all around.

The Dirty Harry films hold-up very well. If you think Magnum Force is bad, try watching the Death Wish films. They fall into the cheap pornography of violence category.
 
I think I saw the first Death Wish which was somewhat forgettable. It didn't inspire me to watch any more.
 
Werewolves of the Third Reich.

The director is described as an amateur horror film maker. Certainly the acting is amateurish, but that's part of the charm and gimmick, it seems stylised and deliberate. The filming and editing is professional.

As a Nazi themed horror flick, it's hard to beat Michael Mann's The Keep from 1983. Never made any money, went straight to video and had all kind of production and editing issues, but I thought it was really well done. Music by Tangerine Dream too.
 
Blood Red Sky. Vampires on a Plane. The plot has holes and the whole premise is silly, but it was watchable. Decent escapist fun. 6/10
 
I tried watching Breach but kept dozing off. I can’t rate it, but wouldn’t recommend it.
