The Next Election, Political News, and Other Forms of Comedy (US, UK, & Intl)

A whole aircraft carrier strike force against a country that relies on Cuba, of all nations, for military support.
Fwiffs. Trump is going to invade Venezuela to get at the disputed offshore oil reserves with Guyana. Plus Venezuela’s undisputed oil.

I find that strange given the US is the number one oil producer of the world. This isn't George W Bush's USA.

And all the oil consumption in the world isn't going to offset major countries (like China) weaning themselves off it to the point that oil executives have resigned themselves to a future of $50/barrel.

No one deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more...says all the countries tripping over themselves to get into the good graces of the United States of America.

Hmm..which one would you conscript.

"'I don't want to go to war because I don't want to die or I don't want to be shot at,' said Jimi, a 17-year-old student from Berlin, who attended an anti-conscription protest outside the Bundestag earlier this week. 'I also don't want to shoot people.'"

"Meanwhile, 21-year-old Jason signed up as new Bundeswehr recruit earlier this year because of the current 'security situation'. 'I wanted to contribute to defend peace, to defend democracy if the worst happens,' he said. By joining up he felt he was 'giving back to society' but also believed in the deterrent potential of the army, 'so potential enemies don't even think about attacking you'"

“He’s a different kind of figure now. Obviously, the questions about the manner of his rule and internal repression, those things haven’t gone away. But he’s a changed figure; it’s a changed moment. And, I think, important symbolically in that sense."

Spending lots of money gets you credibility.

"Even before bin Salman had set foot in the United States, Trump confirmed at an Oval Office event Monday that he would be willing to sign off on the sale of F-35 stealth fighter jets to the kingdom"

If only Zelensky had the money to get these guarantees...

"Critics have raised questions about Trump’s affinity for mixing personal business and diplomacy. His properties have for years hosted tournaments for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. And The New York Times reported this weekend that the Trump Organization is looking at a huge real estate deal with Saudi Arabia."

Mild compared to hosting two leaders branded as ICC war criminals on home soil...

I guess this is her nuclear option. Reduce the already slim house majority before the mid terms.

Another testament that the President can make deals with anyone. Journos touting for this Trump administration that Mamdani is in and Marjorie Taylor Greene is out.

Just give her kids their Obamacare coverage.

“I am very, very optimistic on 2026. We have set the table for a very strong, noninflationary growth economy,

As opposed to growing but inflationary economies. If such things exist.

“The Europeans tell me, ‘Oh, we are doing our 19th sanctions package.’ In my mind ... if you’re going to do something 19 times, you failed,”

“Abdullahi said in a statement that Somaliland would join the Abraham Accords, in what he called a step toward regional and global peace. Historic deals struck late in Trump's first term in 2020, known as the Abraham Accords, saw several countries including Muslim-majority United Arab Emirates and Morocco normalise relations with Israel, with other countries joining later.“

Because recognition of a breakaway part of a sub Saharan African nation is so important to normal relations with Israel?

I will take the best parts since it is behind a pay wall:

“You can tell that there are many more people who are worried,” said Nuuk Mayor Avaaraq Olsen.

Several residents have told her that they’re making plans to move to Iceland, Norway or Denmark. “Some elderly people are already talking about selling everything and going to Denmark as soon as possible,” she said.

Aqqalu Jerimiassen, a Greenland MP, said he doesn’t feel safe any more.

A year ago he joked about Mr. Trump during an interview in his parliamentary office and he didn’t take the President seriously. When we met again last Monday, Mr. Jerimiassen said he now appreciated how Ukrainians felt before Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

“I get questions from my kids, ‘Is there going to be war? Are there going to be soldiers?’ ” said Klaus Poulsen, who runs a local business that sells printers and audiovisual equipment. “The only real answer to kids will always be; ‘Of course not, don’t be scared.’ But they are scared.”

He’s careful too. He’s holding off on big purchases at home and backing away from major investments in his business. “And that worries me, because if I do it, maybe a lot of people do it too, and that’s usually how a recession starts,” he said.

Claus Nissen has already felt the pullback. Sales at his two clothing stores have dropped in recent weeks and some of his clients have started moving their money out of Greenland. He’d like to open another store, but it’s too risky right now.

One customer came in this week with a gift card, saying she wanted to use it before the store closed because of the looming invasion.

As a Canadian I am not shedding a tear. The rhetoric against us was more severe a year ago including denigrating then PM into a state governor. But what did Europeans do then? They laughed it off.

Unlike the threat of tariffs we actually got tariffed on steel, aluminum, softwood lumber et al.

Where was the British PM then? Giving hand jobs for his 10% non binding tariff deal.
