Ha - I remember one of my former direct reports always thought he was from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He came over here as an infant from South Korea, but that was what he checked as his ethnic origin in the census. When I told him he was checking off North Korea he was surprised. I told him that the mnemonic I use to keep things straight is that only communist countries need to tell you they represent the people. People's Republic of China. Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Neither country gives a toss about their people nor are they democratic. Republic of China and Republic of Korea on the other hand don't need to advertise they are elected democracies.

The fact that Hillary is still in the news and Sanders and Biden are being talked about as potential challengers speaks to the dearth of talent in the Democratic party.
 
I think there is plenty of talent, but the party is terrified of change, ironically. Bernie bludgeoned his way to influence, but the establishment was quick to shore up the hole he made when he forced himself in.

A little over a year ago, David Cameron staked his residency at 10 Downing on integration with EU and had to resign in shame from a referendum loss. Angie is retreading her old platform that the EU is best for you a year later, with wind in EU economy sails, and is cruising to victory. Right place at the right time?

Did she even break a sweat in the campaign?

Not sure about Merkel cruising towards victory. A lot of people don't like her.
However, the most likely scenario in Germany after today's election is another coalition of incompetence with Merkel at it's helm. She's like a cockroach, there is only one way to get rid of her...

There was a whole article I read yesterday on BBC about her increasing youth vote every election at the expense of SPD and Greens.

A German Election Analysis
As your host is German you may want to read his opinion about today's federal election results in Germany.

German election results (ARD 6pm exit poll):

  • CDU/CSU - 32.5%
  • SPD - 20.0%
  • AfD - 13.5%
  • FDP - 10.5%
  • Left - 9.5%
  • Greens - 9.5%
No great surprise there.

The result is bad for the top-candidates Merkel (CDU) and Schulz (SPD). The CDU lost 9 percentage points compared to the 2013 election, the SPD lost 5.

Voter migration analysis will show that the CDU loss was caused by Merkel's centrist policies and especially her gigantic immigration ("refugees") mistake. It caused the right-wing CDU voters to go over to the new right-wing party AFD.

Her party will punish Merkel for this catastrophic result. I doubt that she has two years or more years left in her position. Her party will shun her and move away from the center and back into its traditional moderate-right corner.

The voters lost by the formerly moderate-left, now also centrist SPD went over to the liberal-leftish FDP. The FDP is back in the game after having been kicked out of parliament is the 2013 elections.

The Greens and the Left Party results are mostly unchanged.

Over the last 20 years both of the traditionally big parties, CDU and SPD, had moved from their moderate-right, respectively moderate-left positions towards centrist neo-liberalism. In consequence The Left split off the SPD and now the AFD from the CDU.

The AFD is by no means a "Nazi" party though a few Nazis may try to hide under its mantle. The voters are mostly traditionalist, staunch conservatives and anti-globalization. They were earlier part of the CDU.

The SPD will not want to enter another government coalition with Merkel, It played Merkel's junior partner over the last eight years and that led to ever increasing voter losses. It nearly killed the party. The mistake of selecting the colorless Schulz as top-candidate will lead to some (necessary) blood loss in the party's leadership. SPD head Gabriel will, like Schulz, have to step back from leadership positions.

Merkel will have difficulties forming a coalition. She will avoid the AFD as her campaign had discriminated that party as "Nazi" (in itself a huge strategic mistake). She will try to build a coalition with the Green and the FDP. It will be enough to rule for a while but is a somewhat unstable configuration.

We will likely have new elections within the next two years.
 
Isn't the "Left" party the Communists?

It's the parties that never go away.
 
Hopefully Merkel and her ilk will have a hard time keeping the gates for migrants open after this.
Let's wait and see what will happen in Austria and Italy next.

Brainwashed millenials who likely realise what Merkel & Co have done to them by the time they get to retirement age and need a doctor or have to rely on welfare (many of them already do because they can't find a decent job).
 
Merkel's on a sticky wicket now, without the SPD she's going to be relying on some liberals and the fringe Greens to retain power. Then there was that incoveniently leaked report last week concluding she did not have the power to open the borders of Germany, only the Bundestag has this right.

She's ripe for a legal take down. This was always on the cards and the AfD have already announced they're going to go after her.
 
Shinzo Abe just declares an election a year early. Wasn't he burnt by this last time? His ratings are up because of nationalist fervour against North Korea. I reckon if he continues to buy some F-35s and THAAD, President Trump will keep stoking Rocket Man until the election is over. Either that or he is neutered like the British PM.

They're not the centre ground, they are exactly what it say's on the tin: communists intent on implementing their vision of a socialist utopia in the UK. In other words, Venezuela Part II.

The tragedy is, if the Tories don't buck up, they could hand the next election to them.

Labour is now a toxic mix of grim revolutionaries, emboldoned anti-semites, plotting Islamists and frightened moderates towing the line under the watchfall gaze of the Preatorian Guard of Momentum. The real nasty party. The long march through the institutions of academia and the media has ensured 40% of those who voted in the last election cast votes for this party. They are also now the party of choice for the university educated.

Whilst we all greeted Corbyn's catapult from non-identity to glorious cult like leader with mocking laughter, the joke is no longer funny. We all now see the evil and menace that is waiting in the wings.

Be careful, a dodgy and rough city in parts. The only city I've been to where the cultural heritage tourist route included a cruise along the boulevards where the transsexuals and ladyboy prostitutes minced for their trade. Bizarre.

Also the only city I've managed to do nearly a bottle of brandy in over lunch.
