The War With ISIS/ISIL

There are moderate Syrian Opposition forces, even secular ones. Even Christian ones. There are hundreds of Syrian Opposition groups. Maybe thousands. They themselves don't even know how many there are.



Most of the Opposition forces are not Islamist (most are Islamic, but not Islamist; i.e. wanting Shari'a rule) and only a few are fundamentalist. Opposition forces are fighting a multi-front war against both ISIL and the Assad regime. And occasionally the Kurds. And occasionally each other.

Understand, Syria has the one thing that Iraq doesn't: a sense of national identity. Most Syrians want Syria back. They just want Assad and his thugs out, and ISIL out with them. So do we. That puts the Opposition and the US on the same side, here.

This makes it really easy for Russia, though; Russia considers anyone taking up arms against Assad -- read, everyone -- a terrorist. Kurds, ISIL, al Nusra, all the Opposition forces, and probably any civilians remaining in theater. If you're not in a Syrian military unit, you're now a target of opportunity.

I thought the Kurds were against ISIS. What was all that business about Kobane not too long ago?
 
The Kurds are against ISIS and are the only effective fighting force taking them on right now. Elements of the Turkish security forces support ISIS, while they all hate the Kurds (the PKK weren't always saints, but the Turkish response was always disproportionately harsh). The degree of cooperation between the Turkish PKK and Syrian YPK-YPG isn't clear, but they do look close.

Regardless, bombing some Kurds is the standard response to any national event in Turkey, now that the Armenians aren't such good sport.
 
Cuban? They're teaching them guerilla warfare? I thought Assad was the incumbent.
