Things You Just Don't Get

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teardrop_tattoo
The teardrop tattoo or tear tattoo is a symbolic tattoo that is placed underneath the eye. The tattoo can have several meanings, including signifying the number of years spent in prison, the number of times they were raped while incarcerated,[1] or the fact that the wearer has killed someone.[2]
wtf?

This. I've never heard of it being for losing someone, and who wants to advertise how many times they were raped in prison? There isn't enough room on a person's face for some of the rapees.

Some would look like a Samoan WCW wrestler then

They don't....

or the number of times the wearer was raped while in prison, the victim sometimes being forcibly tattooed.

And I was technically right:

It may also indicate the loss of a loved one or fellow gang member.

BTW, facial tattoos, neck tattoos, hand tattoos. I do not get these.
We're not Maori tribesmen here. It's one thing if you're an actual satanist/murderer/outlaw biker/psychopath, but this is just not an appopriate look for wispy effete hipster wannabes.

I don't get memorial stickers on your car's rear window. Heck, I don't get most stickers in a car's rear window. Stick figures and sandals, I'm talking to you!

The overuse of powertools. How many fatasses bitch about having no time to go to the gym, but have a powertool to perform every function imaginable? I realize that for most uses, powertools are more precise. But for most yardwork, why not get a manual tool and get a good workout while you do it? I was in the front yard sawing a log into firewood a while back. Neighbor came over and asked if I wanted to borrow his chainsaw. I thanked him, then looked down at my 13 inch biceps and said "does it look like I don't need an arm workout?"

And really, I can't think of a more satisfying manual labor task than chopping/splitting wood with an ax. Slingblading is also a nice piece of zen.

So true. Our shipping will waste ten minute looking for a cordless screwdriver to open some package with four screws instead of turning a manual driver.
A few nights ago I was outside a little ice cream shop and some guy came out, at 9pm, and used this shrieking little electric leaf blower to sweep up the tiny area in front of the place. It was annoying as hell, and a damned silent broom would've been quicker.
I also like how people will go scrambling for calculators or cell phone apps to add a couple numbers. I guess that grade school stuff didn't stick.

I'd buy some, but I never actually see cars with those stickers parked anywhere that I go. I'm always stuck behind them on the road though.

Patios and women. Why do women keep asking to go on patios and I have to donate my jacket because it gets nippy? Why do they want to go on patios when they're mortified of bees and I'm using my hand risking bee venom to swat them away? Ditto for mosquitoes. Why can't I just have a drink inside a civilized climate controlled interior that the proprietor spent money to renovate and make comfortable?

Since this was in question form, I think that patios play into that Martha Stewart genteel imagery that women have in their heads. It is cute and quaint and looks adorable so they need to do it despite not actually liking it.

My new hot girlfriend wants to have a picnic. On my patio.

I could easily put this in the disagreeable menswear thread, but that corny Russian reindeer leather nonsense. Everyone oohs and aahs about it like it's so beautiful, but it looks just like any cross-hatched leather. The price is absurd, and you're paying for a goofy story about shit dredged up from the bottom of the ocean. I think I read on FNB that it was dry, thin stuff meant for bookbindings, so it's crap for shoes and bags. And it smells like root beer! Big deal, I can put a drop of birch oil in my shoe polish and make that happen.

Peanut Butter and Jelly

EAST VILLAGE — A local artist is attempting to make as many sandwiches as her mother made over 13 years in only five days.

Jessica Olah, of Ditmas Park, did the math and estimated that from September 1990 through May 2004 her mother made 2,340 sandwiches for her to take to school.

“I was bringing someone their lunch [one day] and just marveling over the fact that my mom made me school lunches everyday,” said Olah, 30. “I stopped and thought, ‘Wow, my mom made me lunch every day, not only when I was younger but until high school.’ That is a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”

Inspired to “exercise empathy” for her mother, Olah began the task of making the same number of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in five days at Specials on C, a former bodega turned creative space, in Alphabet City starting Wednesday.

After raising roughly $3,500 on Indiegogo and receiving peanut butter donations, Olah used personal days in order to spend five days spreading peanut butter and jelly on organic multi grain bread.

Her art installation will run through the weekend and the sandwiches will be donated to The Bowery Mission daily. Olah will go down to The Bowery Mission to hand out sandwiches in person this Friday.

“I wanted to understand how much that was and the dedication that might make someone do something like that daily for 13 years of school,” said Olah, who told her mother about the idea early on. “She probably said it was crazy but then I think she was flattered and curious.”

Her day begins at 8 a.m. when she arrives for the morning bread delivery from East Harlem's Hot Bread Kitchen. From there she prepares for a couple of hours before starting the sandwich making at 10 a.m. Her schedule on paper goes to 6 p.m. but she said that many days she will be there until 7 or 8 p.m. to keep up the pace. It is easy to maintain a schedule, the amount of bread delivered daily is equal to her quota, she said.

“I was thinking about how doing something small like this could mean something much bigger if it is done with intentionality,” Olah said.

The table used to create the sandwiches serves as a stage at the center of the room, and 12 chairs are arranged around it for anyone who wants to stop by and watch. Peanut butter jars and completed sandwiches line one wall and photos of her mother making sandwiches line the opposite wall. Without music or any distraction, the room is quiet as she works.

The confines of sitting all day and repetition is the most challenging part of the project, Ollah said.

“I am still figuring it out because I am only on day two, I didn’t know what to think about this going into it,” she said.

Those who want to see the “2,340 PB&J Sandwiches” installation in person can swing by 195 Avenue C during the allotted hours through Sunday.

“I wanted to do this as a meditation on what my mother has done. The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a metaphor for a lot of small tasks mothers might do,” Olah said.

For those interested in more of Olah’s art, she has a gallery show Monday at Roots in Brooklyn and another on Feb. 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at W83 on the Upper West Side. The shows will feature drawings of people in church and portraits of people eating dessert respectively.

Hoepfully she will donate that to the shelter. Otherwise it's just waste of time.

Maybe she should go to a thirdworld sweatshop to enhance her "art" skills.

There you go Pauly - I know its mean to expect you to read stuff.

What don't you get about dumbs Rambo? That article belongs in the all things retarded thread.

Spending a ton of money to vape. Seems likeb you can modify the device to "vape" more then created. I talked to a young man in NYC who's spent almost every dime he's earned on Vaping and jordans.

Why American schools aren't like this

I started pre-school when I was 6 months old in Japan and was in school till I left the country at 6 yo. My joy turned into hate for the rest of my 'education' in the states OLO.

Here I am getting second place in a school race at 4 yo:

You look kinda normal there- how did you end up trying to dress like an unemployed railway worker in the great depression?

Social etiquette - or lack thereof in the 21st century.

I attended an opera a few days ago. My price was $326 for 2 with 20% off. Let's say homeless uneducated people do not crawl into these performances. I will assume this lady who came late is paying slightly above me because she has a single seat on the side on orchestra level. If you come late, you are seated at intermission unless the usher sneaks you in between acts. Said lady comes in, sits down, makes a bit of noise and then when the aria begins, she is adjusting her wooden chair on a wooden floor -- during the aria! Dear God woman, did missing an entire act not indicate to you that making disruptive noise isn't allowed?

After intermission, someone's mobile rings during dialogue. Either this person had speakerphone on or it is what I suspect, they answered a video call because all I could hear was the party on the other end asking what's going on and why is it dark. This took an uncomfortable 10-15 seconds to resolve.

I didn't mention the handful other ringtones that went off during the performance, but these two examples have to be the most egregious.

Torontonians are boors. Sure, people in Saskatchewan wear Rider sweatpants to church and the opera but dammit they know enough to switch off their ringers.

It's often difficult to get off the train or subway here and remain side by side with whomever you are with. I see couples who get on the train in the suburbs and cling on to each other's hands so they can walk down the stairs or into narrow hallways joined together. These aren't newly weds or teenagers in their first love but real couples who appear to have been together for awhile. However, during rush hour, it's near impossible with the jostling to keep your own briefcase or handbag at your side much less a whole other human being. You spend all night with this other person and presumably all weekend, do you really need to be physically attached to your partner/spouse for the few minutes before you exit the station?

Even worse are busy sidewalks where a couple decides to stop and have a conversation btwn themselves or with their phones. I brushed a person's purse who did this and she calls out while I jaywalk across the street, "don't be rude."

People who hold hands all the time are always controlling people. It will be that bloke who "always holds my hand" who will belt you up and or kill you one day because he thought you looked at another bloke.
