I was at a dinner with some CxOs in this city. Two of whom I met before but they don't recognise me so I got a chance to listen to their stories all over again. I hadn't attended any events with this group for quite some time because I left work and my father's death.
It's interesting stepping back for a few years to see these grown men still chasing exclusive luxury resorts, golf courses, platinum/elite status, private club memberships, 3m or more of mortgage tied up in multiple properties, this vendor is offering a cocktail hour, this is offering a dinner, this is offering multi day conference at a posh hotel. The stories about how they were so hung over they could barely pull off a golf swing. The recreational drugs. The blackouts. Particularly with the two I met before - they had already been on this treadmill or mouse wheel for some time. Now they're still chasing the same thing except they are fatter, have less hair, or no hair, and generally look more haggard and older.
And I think how I used to covet those things but now it means nothing to me. I don't think getting top 1% would bring my father back or have let him live for another year. Nor would it make these people build a triumphal arch or shrine to remember me for 10,000 years when I die.
A man can be the happiest and most content in the world on poverty wages. A man could be a trillionaire like Elon Musk and still not be happy because what's happiness? It's the moment before you need more happiness. 2 trillion.
