Volkswagen's Dieselgate

Independent tests have shown that all Diesel cars have a significantly higher output of nitro oxide in real life. Despite passing all the tests.
So how come the EPA is only targeting the VW group? Why not test BMW, Mercedes and the Japanese and French manufacturers? Especially BMW and Mercedes have very powerful Diesel models, so I imagine they will have an unhealthy output of gases as well.
 
Big news, the fuel consumption of cars differ from the manufacturer's data in real life.
Is there anyone and any car that can meet those data?
I'm still amazed that they only target VW.
 
Of course, this whole thing broke because they found some emails. Sure would be nice if our former Secretary of State hadn't deleted hers. Can't imagine all the shady shit she did.

Does all this mean I can now get a really good deal on a new diesel Passat? I am not interested in emissions, except in the case I decide to kill myself following my inexplicable purchase of a KONZERN PRODUKT, in which case the elevated NO2 levels should send me off quicker.

In the 90's I had a Passat 32a. Lovely little car, 75 hp. Because it weight less than 900 kg it ran up to 170 + km/h easily.
One day I had to get the AU for the TÜV (like the MOT in the UK) and I went to the Bosch shop. They fiddled with the carburator settings until the allowed values were reached.
After that I struggled to overtake a VW Beetle on a long straight and it would not even do 120 km/h. When I got home I applied the old settings and it was fine again.
The EU norms got updated in shorter and shorter periods and they were basically a mean of extortion, since owners of older cars had their road tax increased, while those able to buy or lease the latest models have to pay no road tax. Which meant that a low income owner of a Golf III or IV paid more road tax than the owner of a V8 or V12 powered Konzernprodukt luxury car.

Part of the higher emissions is the unnecessary weight of the cars, caused by all the comfort features. Is it too embarrassing to role down the windows by hand, and how often do you have to adjust your seat? Get rid of the air condition and loose the safety features as well. If you're not protected by 20 airbags around you chances are you'll drive more careful.

BTW, VW has offered to pay the road tax difference for all cars involved in the cheating.

One of the main problems is that drivers have no clue what to do with their car when an emergency situation occurs. Or how to react to basic things like over- or understeer.
I've been told by a Swedish friend of mine that learners are taken to an airfield (or similar open places) and get to spin their cars.
I don't know of any other country where they do that. Well, Russia maybe, but there it's a natural thing.
Not to mention those idiots who spend all their money on bling for their car and then buy the cheapest tires around. All your little electronic helpers become futile once you loose traction.

Congress IMO is one of those things that need to be changed everybother decade. They are supposed to be for the people, but after a while they forget from where they came and what they were supposed to do. A person that has been doing the same for so long changes and will eventually only care for his wellbeing.

Whoever funded those people's campaigns will just replace them with new muppets.
The German government is now changing the test. Actually, there were rumours about testing other manufacturers as well, but I'm pretty sure we won't hear about that in public.
No matter what outcome this will have, in the end it will be paid for by the German tax payer. I'm pretty sure VW will manage to come up with a clever accounting solution. Their biggest problem right now is the accusation that they've misused an EU loan/ subvention they got for developing environment friendly vehicles... (about 6 billion dollars).
