WDYBT: What Did You Buy Today

I had sciatica about a decade ago.

My back was hurting badly and I could hardly move - getting out of bed was a five-minute process involving multiple different positions, where I finally rolled off the edge of the bed and my wife helped me to my feet. Anyway, I'd been to the toilet and was very gingerly straightening up when I felt something "pop" in my spine and I had a sensation like a rush of cold water down my right leg, then it suddenly went quite numb, apart from a pins-and-needles feeling.

My wife had to drive me to the doctor as I was most definitely not able to drive, as I could hardly walk. He immediately diagnosed sciatica, but got me to have a scan to confirm. One of my lower discs had popped out a bit at the side and was pressing against one or more sciatic nerves, which was causing the numbness and pins-and-needles.

He gave me a prescription for a corticosteroid called prednisone and told me to spend a week in bed, flat on my back. I was to take quite a lot of prednisone on the first day and then taper down over the next five or six days. This would reduce the inflammation in my back and would hopefully release the muscular tension and the disc would slide back into place. He also gave me a script for Panadol (acetaminophen) fortified with codeine for back pain.

At first, it was still painful and uncomfortable and it was boring as hell. However, it worked! At the end of the week, my lower back still felt slightly sore, particularly when it passed through one angle as I was bending or straightening up, but the sciatica was entirely gone and although my back still twinges a bit if I twist around too quickly, I've never had sciatica issues again.

I don't know if corticosteriods and not moving for a week will work for you, but it did the trick for me.
Thanks the secert JM, not moving. Christ even standing in the shower is hell. Just gotta get the right shape on the sofa and not move. Lets hope this Tramadol stuff does the job.

Have you tried laying on the floor? Maybe your mattress is an issue.

Go see an acupuncturist. A buddy of mine had essentially the same cluster of symptoms and medical intervention you had. According to him, was useless. He resorted to marijuana and that helped but it was ongoing for 3 months.

His wife suggested a skilled acupuncturist. Like most of us in the west, he thought it was all hokum and he poo-pooed the idea. One particularly bad weekend, he tried the acupuncturist and near-instantaneous relief. His pain went from an 11 to a 1. Went for another treatment a few weeks after .

Anyhow, worth considering if the status quo continues.

hard to find a good practitioner

Its alright on the mattress or sofa. Its if I sit or try and walk. For like 10 meters, then I get this really bad pain all down my right leg, kinda feels like cramp and my foot feels really cold. Not so bad with the new drugs but still bad. Takes 30 minutes to an hour to wear off when I lay down again. Pissing me right off. Acupuncturist might be worth a go...anything at this point infact.

I have used a hot water bottle, helps a bit on the ankle. I cant explain the feeling in my leg but round the ankle it feels like cramp. Stretching I do not wanna do. Going to a Chiro Monday.

It's not your leg - it's your lower back.

As I mentioned in my post, those sensations are because the sciatic nerve in your lower back is being compressed, or pinched, and it causes those sensations.

When I had sciatica and saw my doctor, I asked him about going to see a physio or chiropractor. He said that I definitely should not at that stage, as manipulation could very easily exacerbate the situation and make things worse. Rather, I should resolve the issues first and then go and see a physio or chiropractor to work out a stretching and exercise regime so that the problem was less likely to recur.

As I mentioned, I took a course of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids and spent a week flat on my back. That cleared things up and I've never had a reoccurence.

Horses for courses, of course, but if I were you I'd chat to your doctor about a similar treatment.

After things cleared up, I then went to see a physio and had a set of pilates exercises drawn up for me. I still get the odd twinge in my back, but it's been a decade or so now and I've never had a really serious reoccurence of back pain and I've never had sciatica again.

I know its the nerve in the back. My doctor explained it all clearly to me. He said seeing a physio was a good idea. I think I might cancel then. TBH I am not sure I could handle being ragged about on his table at the minute. I had been off work from Aug 24th to three weeks ago with tendonitis in my left knee, now this! Its been a bad five months. Then to top it all off...my mate brought my new coat round last night and its like 2cm to short in the sleeves so its got to go back and be redone. Fuck my life! 😁

Wow, when it rains it pours. Hopefully things turn around for you soon.

I had lower back problems years ago, to the point where I could not move for days. After it settled a bit I'd go to my physio who would slowly sort it out. Luckily it was never more than a week of severe issues. I had acupuncture once at the same physio practice when my guy was away. Worked a treat, administered by an Irish guy who previously worked for Irish Rugby. That was some cross cultural moment.

Try prayer before acupuncture - a bit more evidence that prayer works.

Properly trained physio - not chiro - and load up on strong drugs - Tramadol will be long acting but its a dirty drug - still if you're in pain and it works a few side effects don't matter. You want opioids preferably the real thing or synthetic opioids. Voltaren will usually help in adjunct to the pain killers usually increasing effectiveness. Some people find having a choof of cannabis works for pain. Alcohol usually isn't helpful.
It depends which country you are in - many places have a Calvinist/Protestant/ Mother Theresa view of pain and pain relief - - eg suffering is good.

Pain is only useful as a warning signal and indicator of something - as soon as its done its warning job - get rid of it. Quick.

Worse than ever hear. The paranoia around pain relief and addiction is at insane levels. Older people in particular are suffering as a consequence.

Personally I can not get enough of this Tramadol down my neck. Pain relief rocks.
go easy with it. before you know it you'll be taking it every day and it'll be a part of your life. then you'll stop feeling the same relief and start taking more to get the same "fix" as you did before.

speaking from experience.

Spot on. The good stuff is best when you pop it when you really need it, and going for as long as you can without it. Bit like kopping expensive clothes.

Got this for top for $25 on Sunday. It was on a super sale. Delivering to the store this week as I am rarely home to link with the post office.

Bought half-a-dozen of the RL garment dyed OCBD's for knocking around the house. Use to real dig those shirts back in the late 80s and early 90s. Much better than the boring RL standard Oxfords, thinner and with a much more bolder and vibrant palette. Very 80s, in a good way.

You probably wouldn't want to be seen outside the house or school run in one though.

Coat went back to Naples today. When it comes back it will have new sleeves 2cm longer. Disappointed but otherwise very happy with the fit and quality of finish. Pino was apologetic and keen to put it right as quickly as possible. So its all good. Things happen and its how the maker responds to an issue that matters to me.

Details?

In Sydney? Impossible!
Yes in Sydney. It is possible. I was looking for about 3 weeks and bought a freestanding house in the Inner West. One of two bidders at the auction. I don't know what everybody bangs on about it being hard to buy a house in Sydney.

That and a coat of paint and you’re ready to go!

That's a big and expensive project, I hope you're good at cost control and managing contractors. Or have a reliable one stop shop managing contractor to do the lot, which would my preferred way to remedy that.

Always admire people who take on housing projects like that. I'm just not brave enough.

I honestly can’t tell if this is a troll or not at this point. If not, then

Grand Potentate Grand Potentate Nez is not trolling, he is fairdinkum. What he did made perfect sense. He had little competition for bidding and probably snagged a bargain for the area (still not cheap though). The costs of fixing up will be high, but it probably makes financial sense to have done it that way.

Shooey you’re as pure as the driven show

Only partly a troll. That pic is actually of a terrace (not a freestanding house) that sold for $4m in Surry Hills.

Place I bought is in good condition.

Having grown up in that kind of nightmare renovation as a teenager I would never relive the trauma. Then again I didn’t want to pay for someone else’s overcapitalised reno either; I managed to find an old house in good condition that needs some updates but nothing that can’t wait. I don’t mind spending $30k on a bathroom but not a total strip out. Maybe I’ll build into the attic in the future.

do the strip out and have it done correctly in the first place if you've got the time and opportunity
