WDYBT: What Did You Buy Today

New pair of RM Wiliams

Which model? The toe looks pretty rounded. Actually your left foot looks wider than your right!

Gardener's. Wanted another pair to work in and wear casually as my current ones are getting pretty beat up.

For whatever reason I like the fit of the gardener over the Craftsman or Turnout.

Buying locally means not much selection in what is stocked in the shops here.

The toe is an optical illusion. I made sure because the box they brought out first had a left that was G with and an H for the right so that looked weird right off the bat.

Even went down a 1/2 size because the fit of these newer ones didn't seem as tight as my old ones in my normal 8 AU size

Seems like there is a bit more variability in their construction these days and clearly quality control is not the same.

Nice! I wear several Comfort Craftsman boots to work and Gardeners most weekends.

My main complaint with the latter is that the oily leather scuffs so easily. I actually wonder if there is a defect in the way mine were treated.

I wear a 10 in Gardeners and 9.5 in Craftsman, so it's not just you!

The oiled leather does scuff but that is common for oiled leathers. But you can buff/rub them away easily. But you also have to keep them oiled up regularly

Of all my RMs, the Gardeners just aren't getting much love these days. The colour is a drab muddy brown when oiled or else scuffed to hell and the toe is super blobby round. It's a great work boot, but I'd like something in-between the office and the farm for weekend denim wear. Hence considering the heresy of Blunnies.

I don't know what the RMW refurbish option is like in USA but my youngest sister has 2 x pair of RMWs that she wears a lot. Aside from hitting them with a bit of Kiwi regularly she doesn't look after them. A year or so ago they were cracked on uppers and had holes starting in soles and the side 'lastic was gorn. She dropped them off to get RMW refurbished - they came back fantastic - as good as new BUT worn in to her feet. From memory it was less than half the price of new pairs.

Verrri Noice! Too bad Toyota discontinued production, it was a nice truck. Off road capabilities of a Wrangler Sahara but with Toyota reliability.

Meh. Had one. Did not like it too much. Big blind spot. Got blown around a lot on the highway with that chunky shape and front. Really disappointed by it

I would say between FJ and Wrangler, definitely FJ. I am sad that Nissan discontinued the Xterra as well. That market currently is pretty void.

My EG vests have arrived. Will post pictures tonight. I am glad the temps have dropped and I can still get some good use out of the Primaloft.

Factory reversing camera and Dollar Store blindspot mirror solved that for me.

Mine will be three in May and I'm still happy with it. Small enough to park in tight spots, easy to load small kids into, off-roading 2WD/4WD with decent urban fuel economy.

I'm already a Harrington and RMW boot collector.

Not sure about the cord jacket. Sound a bit Welcome Back Kotter. Do you have a pic of what you have in mind?

Just purchased on the net a pair of Turnbull & Asser mustard coloured Manson chinos. They look a bit low rise to me, but I thought I would take a chance as mustard that is just the right shade and not canary yellow is so rare these days. Hopefully they'll be a winner, if not, they'll go back and I will get a shirt instead.

eBay Gustin short sleeve baby blue gingham seersucker shirt, new $20 shipped. Great fit - slim on body and arms but no plumber's crack when I bend over. I just wish they had stuck with collar buttons on the short sleeve models.

Been buying a good amount of great quality worldclass vintage cashmere from the likes of Lyle & Scott, Pringle and Ballantyne. Got some really classic argyle intarsias, a dark grey V neck, a cream V neck, a classic black thick cashmere V neck, a burgundy Pringle cardigan, a Pringle mock turtle neck colourful stripe knit and many other great cashmere knit goodies.

Observations

Ballantyne is of exceptional quality. Some jumpers are thin and others are really thick and solid with tight kniting. Much better than my Johntons of Elgin cashmere.

I wore my brand new vintage Ballantyne argyle intarsia the other day and the pleasure l obtained from wearing it greatly exceeded my expectations. I was blown away by the experience!!!...nothing quite like it!!!

I shall post pics when l sort technical stuff out. Hopefully in the next few weeks.

Some awesome argyle intarsias by Ballantyne.

I bought about a dozen all up, some new old stock and others vintage. A few were solid colours of bone, black and dark grey, heaps of argyle intarsias and others. Some Ballantyne are thin knit, some are medium knit and others are thick knit (see pic above).

shooey are you going to snap those shoes off Gumtree - just for the collection?

I need to learn to say no.

When l learn how to upload pics from my camera i'll post my jumper collection. Got all the colours.

I am going to get some of these also, some 4 ply jobs from Berk apparently made to the old Ballantyne standards of tight knitting by the old Ballantyne workers. Check out this bad boy!

the same men and women who worked for Ballantyne now make knitwear for the Berk label in our mill. We knit our cashmere tightly in time-honoured fashion, wash it in pH neutral water and call it 'Bare Finish™ cashmere'.

Great stuff. Please let us know what you think of the new Berk stuff. I really hope it is up to the old Ballantyne standard, and not just over priced William Lockie.
