What happened today that neither pissed you off nor made you happy but is nevertheless noteworthy?

Inspired by David Gyasi from The Diplomat I started wearing my odd vest/waistcoat again. This was mostly because it was cold and barely any clothing fits me so at least I can tighten up the waistcoat so things look less blousy.

I dodged a solstice party where the host had coronavirus. 24 hour cancellation notice.

Went for a walk today and barely anything was opened but there was a lot of out of town pedestrians. I deliberately didn't go to the mall that's open 364 days a year.

I walked 2.5km to drop off an old ninja blender and some footy kit and winter gloves. Then I had to walk back. I hope the underprivileged and homeless appreciate my sacrifice. It is also bloody freezing and I am thawing in this west facing glass box of an office building lobby during sunset.

I attended a concert by a youth gospel choir. Besides being elbowed by this blonde woman next to me I was wondering about the lyrics - specifically the term highway to heaven. Does anyone actually want to get on a speeding highway to heaven and leave life? Wouldn't you want to stay in real life for a bit longer?

I had to get Uber for a lady friend because she was afraid she'd get on the same train as her husband going home.

We’re gonna need a lot more context on this man, sorry.

She said last time I dropped her off on the platform she then messaged her husband to ask him to pick her up at the rail station back at home. It turns out she took the same train as he did when he was getting off work.

And why is this a bad thing?

And why is that a bad thing?

That's a good question for her to answer. Or him...

Mid month. Not that many people hitting the gym in my building at 5am. Hopefully the few that did will give up.

So far some oriental girl with C cups who either does slow-motion treadmill or slow-motion treadmill + bodyweight exercises at least I think that's what she is doing rolling around on the ground on a mat. Some Hispanic woman with a bitch face who sits on a bicycle. Some blonde where no amount of cardio on a treadmill will make her lose weight unless she adds strength training. And some tall lanky young man who spends a good 5 minutes stretching before the treadmill. You're young - just do high intensity right away.

I wonder what they say about you.

C cup came in today and walked a bit and ran for 10 minutes. Part of the 10 minutes wasn't answering a call whilst on the treadmill. Then she left. On any other day I'd find her rolling around on a mat in the weight room but it's closed the next two days for renovations.

I went to my uni mate's birthday party on Friday. I intended to skip out early but I ended up being the last one to leave. Even though I wasn't high and I didn't drink.

When I walked in I walked right past their table (I was thinking of sitting at the bar until they tried to get a big table) and one of them said he knows me from high school. Except in high school he had blondish/orange curly hair and no facial hair. Now he has facial hair, a cap to cover his bald head and looks like an ex military serviceman who didn't keep up with his fitness. He had a pint and then said he had to start his night shift. I don't know if I should be embarrassed.

An opossum right outside the window. Not to be confused with the cute and cuddly marsupial Australian possum, the opossum is kinda mean and will hiss at you.

The new OpenAI deep research feature is madness. It does the work of any competent analyst putting together fairly comprehensive research on any topic in 10-20' minutes. I'm sure it requires thorough quality control (but hey, so do 20 yo analysts!), but as a starting point to put a dossier together is mind blowing. I used it to analyze my supplement stack, get a sense for a fairly complex cross-border taxation issue, and to analyze a business model, and I'm quite impressed!

I saw someone copy and paste a bunch of stuff into Claude claiming this will help CFOs analyse business cases and balance sheets. If you're CFO, should you really need help to do these things? I can imagine if you're head of legal or the chief tech guy that you might need the AI help.

It's almost like a VP HR who needs AI to generate competent interviewer questions.

I went to a lecture by Anne Applebaum yesterday. I had no idea who she was. Last year it was Mark Carney. She writes for The Atlantic, still calls it Twitter, and won a Pulitzer. Her lecture was on Autocracy Inc - how money, and monied people are boosting autocrats in each nation and how each autocratic government copies one another in propaganda (MSM, defund xyz), technology (troll farms, surveillance/spy software) and purpose (enriching themselves, their families and friends) regardless of ideological value (covered women in Iran, 'communist' China, conservative authoritarianism Russia, etc.). She says these autocrats don't rise up in individual countries with the same modus operandi in isolation, but she said they aren't convening in secret James Bond style as a circle of villains.

During the question period a local professor asked her where is the resistance to the current administration. She said it's coming, there will be court challenges, there will be uproar, they (the liberal intellectuals and defenders of democracy) won't wait till midterms.

Listening to two blokes talk about their Trump investments and how much they get a month with which institution. Then they talked about taking the rail or subway downtown for their job, how much it would cost to pull off a 4-11 dinner shift waiting tables, transport and work attire. One finally said if he had 100k he would be set.

I saw a telephone company repair van try to do..I don't know, a U-turn or 3 point turn in a 2 lane road that had 1 1/4 lane not covered in 30cm of snow. Remarkably a bloke behind him in a Range Rover, the courier driver behind him, and a third man who were blocked by this van came out to try to help him.

On another street I saw a full sized coach bus try to turn into a side street (why I have no idea) where the snow must have been 30cm+ and it got itself stuck where the rear wheel was spinning haplessly. People trying to get into parking garage on the side street kept cautiously backing up to give it room. A cop sat by in a cruiser watching the whole thing. He probably couldn't have helped the bus, but at least he could tell cars to go around the bus.

There was an advert saying lean ground beef and pork for $6. Upon getting to the store it wasn’t lean ground beef and lean ground pork. It was some unknown mixture of meat from both animals.

I went to the library to read a newspaper I already have a digital subscription to. I finished the few articles I missed in the morning and found it strangely easier to skim and focus on paper than on my tablet.

I used ChatGPT instead of Copilot to calculate capital gains, adjusted cost base of a pretty simple example of I bought something for X, I sold some, I got a distribution, and I sold some more. I was puzzled why the numbers were kind of close but not quite. Upon probing ChatGPT also makes basic multiplication errors. Unit price x units = amount. It lists the formula right but misses basic arithmetic. ChatGPT then said it was rounding...no idea which digit it was rounding.

I can read an old skool paper much, much quicker than I can on a Tablet.

That just means we're old mate.

I also moan about not typing properly on all glass mobile phones when my 20 something mates use Siri/Google Assistant to read and reply to lengthy messages.

I'm one of yer actual speed readers. One of my super skilz was reading 500 page reports and writing a summary, before most people had read the title page.
