What TV Shows Are You Watching?

Rewatching Altered Carbon in anticipation of the new season release on Thursday.

I finished the second season of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The first season was a bit restrictive and centered around the home. Maybe it was the size of the budget. Even though the era is late 1950s and early 1960s, I think they need to hire the wardrobe person from Mad Men. Some of the suits had atrocious fits.

Tiger King

Flamboyant, gay country singer has a collection of tigers, lions etc in Oklahoma. He is at odds with a millionaire cat preservation woman whose husband disappeared - allegedly fed to tigers. These are more like characters from a novel or film script.

Also learnt :-
There are more lions and tigers in captivity in USA than throughout the world in the wild

A bloke in Ohio let his zoo full of wild animals loose and then committed suicide. Police had to shoot about fifty wild cats.

So it was not just Pablo Escobar that had wacky menageries.

Tiger King

I read a lengthy article about this a while back, via the Longform app on my iPad. It was very good.

I think that it was this article, from the Texas Monthly (which has some very good articles, by the way):

There was another chap in Myrtle Beach with wild cats. He used to ride around on an elephant and had some notion that he could be a Western version of an Indian mystic.

Both men employed those who had fallen on hard times and they were offered a home, security and a small wage.

It seems more like fiction that reality. I suppose in a libertarian society you let citizens do as they please provided it does not harm others. Families would take kids along and young lions were used as a type of petting zoo.

I finished Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. All three seasons. I would watch the fourth but the coming out as an amateur comic story is done.

god you poor bastard. how did you manage to get through all of that?

It took over two and a half months. She’s spunky. I like the era - based on some other show I watched in my defining years. I wouldn’t be able to watch more than two episodes in one sitting though.

got a new show for those who like subtitles - Beforeigners. norweigian HBO show about people who show up from the past. 4 episodes in and its got me hooked so far.

Wow! What can I say about this 4 part mini series except that it is the best thing that I have seen on Netflix recently.

A 19 year old Hasidic woman born/living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn(NY) in an arranged marriage, gets up the courage to escape to Berlin. She doesn't feel comfortable in the marriage and wishes to explore her own freedom without all of the "trappings" of the orthodox Satmar community.

The absolutely brilliant Shira Haas plays Esty Shapiro and she brings so much to this role. The series takes you between the past(meeting her intended husband/marriage/first year) and the current(trying to survive in Berlin/meeting new friends/etc) rather well.

This is not a simple escape and live happily ever after show. The husband/mother in law/community/rabbi set out to find Esty and bring her home. The husband and his shady cousin head to Berlin to find her just as Esty is trying to settle in and carve out a life for herself.

This series will make you want to laugh, cry, get angry....and everything in between.

I have been looking for something on Netflix that captures my attention and this was it. I watched the four appr 50 min episodes last night in one sitting. Captivating!

(Do watch "The Making of Unorthodox" after to get a sense of what went into creating this show. It is based on a true story.)

Netflix finally gets it right!
4.5/5!

you're a pure sadist

I didn't learn anything new other than them losing the governor's mansion once before regaining it. I thought it was continuous. They seem to have downplayed Huma Abedin's role. Maybe she didn't want to participate and that's why.

Clearly the 2016 campaign team were clueless as to the angry Make America Great Again populace that doesn't register in polls or behave in a traditional manner. Also I didn't know Clinton and Sanders didn't get along. Well, according to Clinton, Sanders just doesn't get along with anyone.

The lead character is great - a vulnerable ingenue. Her diminutive size -she is not much bigger than a child - soon gets the viewer on her side and looking for things to turn out well.

I started watching out of curiosity about the world of Orthodox Jews. There were interesting little scenes like the kitchen covered in kitchen foil during Passover. I like the fur hats but never saw that many. I thought they denoted one branch but apparently they only get worn on religious holidays which is why I never saw many in the Hatton Garden diamond district. These shtreimel hats are expensive though, so they got cheap imitations for the film.

The wayward Jew, Moishe, did not sit well - always smoking a fag and keen on his gambling. A ‘geezer’ Jew would not be Orthodox.

The author of the book on which the series is based is quite a big lass. I don’t think it would have worked so well if someone like her played Esty.

Of course it is a view of an outsider. You won’t see a film from the viewpoint of a contented Orthodox Jew.

I once saw a documentary about them where a rabbi said having the internet or TV would be like letting a sewer run through your home.

Interesting also the different varieties of Orthodox. They seem to be like Protestants in that respect - follow your particular leader.

The Monocled Mutineer from back in 1986, very controversial at the time and led to questions being asked in the Houses of Parliament. A dramatized series on Percy Toplis and the British and colonial army mutiny at the Etaples military base in 1917. Utterly brilliant. Adapted by Alan Bleasdale, a lot of his stuff has dated badly (Boys from The Blackstuff) as they can be rather preachy and from this perspective, quite wooden in his portrayal of the aspirations and tribulations of the Liverpool working class in the late 1970s/80s. But here you have the brilliant Paul McGann leading the charge as anti-hero cutting through all the class and socialist BS. Highly recommended if you haven't watched it before, or haven't for awhile.

I remember watching that when I was young, and it was both very good and shocking to me as a child. It was also published as a book - I'm not sure whether the book came before or after the miniseries.

I read later that the story was full of inaccuracies - apparently Toplis wasn't involved in the Etaples mutiny at all - but it certainly raised questions about the treatment of troops in France in WWI and the way in which the treatment both caused, and exacerbated, the mutiny.

The book came first and was published in 1978. Toplis was not involved in Etaples at all, his unit was on the way to India at the time. Unless he had already deserted. The questions in the Brit Parliament at the time resulted in the finding that the original inquiry on the mutiny at the time had been shredded.

The horrendous treatment and conditions at Etaples are briefly mentioned in poetry by Siegfried Sassoon, correspondence by Wilfred Owen, but directly by Vera Brittain who stated it was the horrendous dehumanizing regime metered out by the Military Police on the squaddies that directly led to the mutiny. And it was a mutiny, not so long ago, lots of opinion that it was only some rioting and disturbances.

The dramatization whatever the historic inaccuracies and romance, remains a classic in what the BBC did/do(?) better than the rest: accurate costume drama mini-series with exceptional mise-en-scene.

Might start Plot Against America tonight. That or the film Once Upon a Time In America. Also waiting for the new Vida ... mostly for the nudity, tbh.
