Last year, I bumped into an old staff of mine when he took a contract near my workplace. We had lunch at my club, and I paid. Then during Christmas, he took me out and he paid. He invited me to the dining hall of the law society so it was something I hadn't experienced before. He mentioned his employment at the society wasn't tenable and he may be looking for work in 2016.
I said I already budgeted for a reduction in 2016, not an increase and so far no one wanted to leave. Fast forward and now someone quit. Unfortunately, he wasn't the one I wanted to terminate so I am terminating another here and flying to an office in the States to terminate one more. He rang to wish me a happy long weekend to which I told him it was his lucky day because I had a resignation to which he could fill. He was picky about the financial aspects.
During the holidays, I also met one of the partners of an agency I deal with. I've always told him about tastings and my cocktail club. I ended up taking him to one and he paid for the night. I thanked him, but for what reason I don't know since I didn't have any openings.
When my current staff resigned, I connected the agency partner with this former staff and at someone's loss or gain, it looks like I'm rehiring my former staff at a rate that works for said agency, my firm and me.
All these disparate and unrelated events are adding up. Now that all the terminations are taking place at once, I can preach a single cost cutting narrative. It almost seems like I had a plan all along with these lunches and dinners.
