What's Making You Happy Today?

Three reasons I'm happy today:

1. I saw the "Marine One" helicopter flying near my place while Barack Obama was on his way to the University of Queensland (my alma mater, and also where my wife teaches) to give a speech this afternoon.

2. My wife is interpreting at the L20 (Labour 20) and G20 meetings that are on this weekend (which is why Barack Obama is in town). Yesterday, she interpreted for the Managing Director of the IMF, the President of the World Bank, and the Governor of the Bank of England (who is also the head of the G20's Financial Stability Board), the Australian Treasurer (like the US Secretary of the Treasury or the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer), the Australian Employment Minister as well as lots of other international delegates to the L20 and G20. She's interpreting at some bilateral/multilateral meetings tomorrow. Exhausting and stressful for her, but very high-level work for an interpreter.

3. At the risk of sounding like I'm boasting, my 9 year old son just got an A+ on his latest violin exam (Aust Music Examinations Board level 3). He gets to choose where to go to dinner as a reward for his very hard work.

Fuck yeah, pancakes for dinner for Journeyman Journeyman 's kid!

I know he won't choose McDonald's, but I'm just hoping that he does choose somewhere decent instead of the local "steak and salad bar buffet" place that is unaccountably popular with school kids around here.

This guy went out like a fucking champ.

BERLIN (AP) — Police say a man angered by a family feud has set off explosives outside his house in Germany, killing himself and wounding seven people in a small village.

Police spokesman Thomas Rodemer said that following an argument inside his home in Homberg village in Hesse state, the 49-year-old man drove away in his car, then returned and blew himself up inside the vehicle parked outside the house.

The seven people slightly wounded by debris from the explosion included family members, neighbors and two police officers who had been called to settle the family argument. The blast also damaged neighboring homes.

Rodemer said the bomber had a license to use explosives and that police are investigating the case.

The man's name was not released in keeping with Germany's privacy law.

This is how you handle a petty familial squabble.

I had 7 things to do for work this weekend and I already finished 2. NFL game #2 only just started.

Oh sorry, meant to say I had 7 and I finished 5. 6 is almost done.

Gave A Canuker an early Christmas gift today

Nailed a presentation today in front of 70 or 80 people. All of the division's senior management and the CEO even made a cameo appearance. I realised I was the only skip there. Got numerous kudos after the presentation from different areas. I was on a high for a few hours from presenting.

Another 13 hour work day. Stayed so long I missed the snow storm. Got the last taxi via uber. Yes! Expensed trip from the suburb beyond uptown back to downtown.

Thanks. And thanks for letting me ramble on about the workings of state bureaucracy when we grabbed chicken. Life takes some interesting turns, Wish I could resurrect and transport the Pat thread.
Honestly I found it fascinating. I'm always interested in knowing what goes into the hot dogs.

God, that thread was the best.

Got promoted to agency head and I'm at the point in my life where I told them I wouldn't accept it without assurances I could return to my old job in no later than six months.

And I got tickets to Ryan Bingham's solo show in Jacksonville in February.

Good for you, man

Due to personal commitments I have to, on occasion, deviate from feet to rail for my personal commute. There is a lady here who keeps herself quite fit with yoga whom I've seen walking a block or two away from me who sits at the same place on the train. She's the equivalent of a Styleforum peacock in the female sense. Today she has a plunging neckline dress or top wrapped up in a fire engine red trench coat blissfully asleep with equally red lipstick. If only she would do something about the bangs.

Pics or it never happened.

Took the day off for yank Thanksgiving. Usually I see the Detroit game with an old work mate and go to watch the rest with my parents. I reversed it this year. Going to the family house tonight and watching the parade and Detroit with my father. Then heading into the city again for Cowboys and Eagles.

People asked me why and I replied that I worked for a States firm for eight and a half years. Then I jumped and was posted to Atlanta for over two years. I'm used to peace and quiet during this time.

Hanging out at my club. I have the afternoon off. After my bender last night, on my third whisky for lunch and fish and chips is very good for revival. Jazz, whisky and fried food.

I'm happy because for lunch I went to the bar / lounge of a steakhouse in the financial district with a female companion. She remarked besides one hostess and one waitress she was the only female in a sea of men, white men, in suits and ties.

Then I somehow finally ended up in a favourite haunt with 30 people seating and 2 of 3 men are in ties with BlackBerry the predominant mobile.

I live in a bubble from the yesteryear don't I?

I'm a member of an athletic club for men. The club has a restaurant and bar positioned before you get through to the lockers, squash courts and gym equipment. Naturally after four years of membership, I've never made it past the bar except to get to the bathroom. Haven't the foggiest clue what's beyond the toilet.

Female companions, if they dare come, need to use the toilet for the receptionist - who is always an attractive bird.

On Friday nights, I wouldn't dare bring a woman there to the bar. The jokes and banter can be full of misogny.

I listened to Hard Knock Life from Annie, after mocking this new ridiculous version of the flick.
There is a line where the orphans lament having "cotton blankets instead of wool" and it warmed my heart. Wool!

The upcoming, or maybe already in theatres (?) Annie movie continues to bring me joy. Today, because I find that Cameron Diaz is playing Ms. Hannigan the orphanage harpy. It's about time we collectively stopped pretending that Diaz is young and/or particularly attractive.

I am taking tomorrow of just because I want too. Too much HR aggro at work so so mindless manual labour is just the ticket.

gufasd i promise I won't wear a vest inside a coat wrapped in a riddle topped off with an enigma

Had my first sauna in 4 months of gym membership.

Also, think a middle aged gay man attempted to pick me up in there. It's nice to be wanted.

I called 1-888-5OPTOUT and had the credit rating agencies stop selling my name. Hopefully I'll be getting less solicitation from Chase and Geico, whom I'd never do business with.

I only have about 2 or 3 gifts to purchase and I'm finished Christmas shopping. Still a bit of wrapping to do though. My handwritten Christmas cards showed up quite early to the States.

I had to traipse through half a block of snow and then walked underground all the way to my office. It reminded me why I live where I live. A new hotel opened across from my flat and once I figure it out, I ought to be able to just cross the street to make it underground.

I'm at my watering hole - a hotel bar of 30 people. I am rewarded with a Christmas holiday party for regulars. Free buffet hotel food all the way.

I'm happy my parents put up the Christmas decorations at the family home.

I'm happy I finally got that haggis or whatever it is ate on Friday out of my system.

I would be happy if I could just find some peace.

Big unexpected dividend check came in the mail. I'm not sure if it's correct or incurs some tax penalty, but surprise checks are still nice.

I found a speaker horn from 1926, considered the unobtanium grail among elite audiophiles (probably less than 16 in existence, four owned by one billionaire) Got confirmation today that I can purchase it, won't be able to afford any new clothes for six months now but couldn't be happier.

for collecting purposes or for listening?

Made from 1" thick slabs of handcarved wood, weighs close to 200lbs, and it's pretty damn big. I wouldn't sell it even if offered four times what I'm paying for it unless I knew I could buy another one right away. Will be the only thing I listen/remaster on till I die.
