All About Watches

Sweet.

Picked up my GS today. Very happy - it's a pearler of a watch. Downside is I'm not at all sure I can justify two new steel sport/dress watches in short measure, so might have to nix my O/S plans.

That said I'll still have a look what's around when I'm in Brazil in case there could be a deal I can't refuse.

I'm almost positive I'm going to end up with a GS Hi Beat GMT before it's all said and done.

Godammit Monkey I had compartmentalized that one out of my consciousness. Now I'm back to square one.

Just look at is a lifetime cost. Does a few hundo a year really matter in the grand scheme of things if it means you can wear a YACHTMASTER?

The regular automatic GMTs are handsome watches too, and a fair bit cheaper.

Which one to kop? I know that Omegas don't get much love around here, but I have soft spot for them (especially Seamasters/Seamaster Devilles of that vintage).

Seconded.

Unless it's a speedy or an ocean, omega's designs are rather bland.
Quite frankly, I like the bland. I was at an authorized dealer for GS the other day. . . And though they are all immaculately produced and beautifully finished watches, even the GMTs were too much for me.

I am quite fond of the GS Hi-Beat 36000, though. Especially with the "sunburst" white dial and the steel blue second hand!

I think there are better simple watches out there but to each their own. If you like it, buy it, and be happy with it.

Big difference in price, really apples and oranges comparison in other ways too. It's like comparing a 1960s Mustang to a new Lexus LS500.

Not a fan of modern Omegas but the 1960s models are the ones to get - if you can be sure it's genuine (I suppose if you don't care for authenticity of parts etc. and only about how it looks you don't have much to lose). Not sure what these go for now, maybe a top top example would be up to $1k. And then there are possible (uncovered) service and reliability issues that come with a vintage watch. You may not want to live with that.

Otoh the GS is a modern watch, with warranties, modern performance and a price to match at about 5-10 times a vintage Seamaster. Personally I wouldn't pay a huge premium for that LE - it's basically the regular hi-beat model with a grained dial and gold hand. Same case, same movt, same everything else. Unless you love it and absolutely must have it get the sbgh001 and save some money.

I'm with doghouse doghouse in digging Omega. I like the black example you posted. But prince nez prince nez brings up a good point about the practical issues of an old Omega. Just have a good watchmaker who can service/refurbish it. Maybe do some desktop research on how easy it is to get parts for 60's vintage ones

I like vintage omegas also. those are not daily rockers, though. of course depending on your routine. apropos, I need mine to be serviced and finally deceide on the strap. good reminder

there are more good watchmakers around, than good cobblers. go figure. its self explaining to have the service crew available, imo. no rocket science.

The vintage Omegas are pretty much easy to service and plenty of parts available, or so I am told. So servicing issues shouldn't worry the potential buyer.

What about Ole Mathiesen:

Very simple and sleek design. I've one and I do sport it a lot for work, when I want something very simple, particularly for meetings. It has no connotations of being a poseur, showing-off, or indeed pissing people off that some luxury brands can cause.

That is a great analogy; you can probably get (at least) three of those Omegas in working and relatively decent condition for the price of a new GS Hi-Beat (I actually have in mind the one the SBGH037 with the steel-blue second hand; it is just that the instagram photo of that special edition was too sexy not to post. I think it is the same dial as 37, at any rate.).

Ultimately I want them all, and for different reasons, but I can only afford one at the moment. Priorities!

I have the sbgh037- it's also a special edition but with a unique case to the full production models. Top watch if you can locate one. I would also see no reason why you couldn't alternatively wear the GS and a 60s seamaster on a leather strap, so just because you get one doesn't preclude getting the other at some later point.

It is just the finances that preclude it at this point! I do, however, prefer them as shown in the pictures: the Seamaster Deville with a leather strap and the GS with the bracelet. A tad dressier for the former, a little sportier for the latter.

Watching LA LA Land I decided I want a black leather Watchband. I don't think I've ever had one.

Any rules about black leather bands with either silver or gold watch cases from you AAAC types?

There's no strict rules, although I do not recommend a gold chain pocket watch matched with a gold chained compass for everyday wear in the manner of upr_crust.

why? if i wear a tri colored nato strap does that mean i need to wear bowling shoes?

Different material. It's similar to how I wouldn't wear a brown leather belt with black leather shoes, but one of those coloured canvas belts could be worn with either.

i suppose this is a fundamental disagreement because i don't see a watch band as being anywhere near a belt in terms of importance in an outfit's flow. jewelry is for decoration, not coherence.

Who ever sees you watch band anyway? It should be under your cuff unless you're the one looking at it for the time. If it really bothers you get a black faced watch with a brown strap and you'll have all bases covered.

Ask Andy has just issued a mass invite to youse . With urgent invite to monkeyface.

I was asking wondering about the micro aesthetics issue of colour of band against watch case colour. All the rest is about degrees of formality which I'm more than capable of negotiating without anxiety or lack of knowledge of court protocol.
