All About Watches

Yeh, great for Swatch but why are Omega doing this?

Given they belong to the Swatch Group I doubt they had a lot of say in this but could you imagine Rolex doing plastic submariners? For me this is a definitve devaluation of the brand and especially the model, as fun as it may be.

I think it is the culmination of decades of devaluation. The model suffered with each and every new/special/limited speedmaster/moonwatch.

It will not affect Omegas prestige in the slightest. This is just a marketing ploy to make swatch a gateway to Omega

It's a bit of fun isn't it:

If it wasn't for toy plastic watches, there wouldn't be half of the watch brands in the Swatch Group. It won't effect either brand negatively.

I had the Speedmaster Redux, went back under warranty 3 times, that piggy-back movement is too sensitive by far and that's probably why they discontinued them. They were the ideal size, 39mm, great dressy chrono the normal Speedo's are too big.

When my missus worked at the European Space Agency they use to get regular offers to get the Skywalker X-33's for €999. The deal was you couldn't sell it. But you had to be quick, as they were limited in numbers of each release. Of course, instead of just buying it as I told her, she would procrastinate and send me the email and by the time I responded they were all gone.

Back in the shoulder padded, big haired, synthesizer-ed 80s, the Spanish car manufacturer SEAT had some 'consultancy' done by Porsche for some of their warm hatches, they probably redesigned the distributor cap retaining clips or something (remember distributor caps boys? I'm showing my age there!). Anyways, flushed with their association with such an, august brand, they decided to promote it for the discerning customer by sticking 'System Porsche' decals on their cars...

Those 'System Omega' watches remind me of that,. Its like a trip down Elm Street...er...sorry......Memory Lane!!!!!

Can someone explain the hype to me? I don't get it.
It's just a bit of a vibe and buzz. It's for the youngsters of course...and those resellers this morning of which there was a number in evidence. There was a chap near me on every horological platform on his iPhone loving every luxury watch imaginable - clearly, a busy hustle. It was mainly students in their early to mid-20's half speaking Dutch the rest speaking English.

I enjoyed it. Got up early, feeling great for the first time in weeks, but as I've got people living downstairs, I needed to do something. So there I was in the centre of Rotterdam and I thought, if I go there now, I'll just look stupid with the other 10 nerds outside the Swatch store. So I went for a coffee at McDonalds which cost me getting one of the watches today.

I'm sure whatever I got would have given some pleasure for at least a day or a week for someone.

Looks like they may have underestimated demand
We'll see when the next batches come in.

Porsche Design do many things, including spectacle frames. It's the same as Bang & Olufsen being on every laptop and computer screen these days.

Aesthetically, I think several Swatch watches are extremely pleasing, it falls down in the materials of course. But for €55-90 you can do no wrong. They don't look like something cheap and nasty pretending to be something more expensive. In fact they go out of their way to be distinctively a plastic Swatch watch and be damned. I haven't owned one since I had the Peter Gabriel Ltd Edition from the early 1990's, but if I needed an urgent replacement watch on a trip or something, I would have no problem in sporting the Twice Again or something similar and wouldn't be embarassed who saw it.

There is nothing wrong with Swatch watches....gussied-up Swatch watches though...

What Omega perhaps need is a Tudor...

kind of a lot of people out there who can't afford a speedmaster so this is a way for them to get a piece of the action.

Of what action? I mean all Swatch did was make a counterfeit version of their own product (since they own Omega) and sell it 20 times the price of a Chinese knockoff, which might or might not have the same longevity as the Swatch depending of how shitty it is. I mean, sure one is legal and one isn't but if you're looking at getting your anal cavity enlarged I don't think legality matters a lot.

And I am not even hating on the product, I mean they do what they want with their designs and so on, I just don't see anything that's worth waiting in line outside of the stores for. I read a thing or two online to see what it was all about and when I saw the headlines for dummies like "Did Omega and Swatch Just Release a Moonwatch under $300?". I was like "oh, ok, bye".

I am not at all a watch person so maybe I am truly missing something there, but it just reminds me of when Aston Martin slapped their grill on a Toyota IQ called it a "Cygnet" and said to the world "Voila". There is nothing wrong with being too poor to own an Aston, but buying a Toyota rebranded as an Aston more or less immediately puts you in the "I'm a massive twat" category.

agreed. its a dumb repro on the cheap. i didn't honestly think this would launch 1000 thinkpieces.
There's a lot of pissed-off and puzzled watch Youtubers.

At the top of the list is that cockney watch seller who had just bought the Omega Seamaster PloProf who finds his expensive purchase sullied by this collaboration. Actually, as the most ugliest watch in the Omega range, he only has his self to blame.

IDGuy is one of the few who gets it. And looking at a number of the unboxings, they look really neat, loads of people - Swatch fans - are going to collect the full lot.

I inherited this Doxa Automatic watch from the 70s - or 80s

Although it is not ELITE TOP TOP, for sentimental reasons I can clean/polish/overhaul and squeeze it in my rotation of Rolexes. What kind of bracelet should go with this watch? I’m in favor of some metallic. What say ye?

The only recent Pateks I like are out of production: The 5196J-001 and the 5146G-001, everything else they make is not particularly appealing.

Was at the local Swatch store for a battery change. They had a full display of all 11 models, look A LOT less interesting than online. They had already received new ones yesterday and will get more by the end of next week. I know because during the ~15 minutes I was in the store about 5-6 people came and asked.

That was the Swatch-Omegas?
