Apple, Android, Smart & Dumbphones - The Mobile Thread

I did Force Stop on every app I could and now the lag is gone. Surely there is an automatic function for this in Android 12.

I upgraded to Android 13. There's an option now to kill background apps. Previously I had to install KillApps just to free up memory.

Reasonably impressed with Android 13. It seems faster even if you open a few apps together. Not quite sure why the lock screen needed to change though.

I personally went through bluetooth headsets from BeatsX, random Chinese knock off, Bose Sport, JBL, Jabra and now have 3 ear buds from Samsung + another Bose + Sony.

Noise cancelling is great if I want to listen to a call, but I find it gives a false impression you can speak in a softer tone. In your world things sound great but to the other person your voice is often very distant/far away.

I find people complained the least about my voice quality when using Jabra and my old Bose. People often complain about the Sony and Samsung ones. I only use JBL to listen to podcasts for workouts now since the microphone is practically unusable.

Batteries always seem to die out after more than a year of use (mostly Mon-Fri).

I was going through some old photographs from the 2017 and I was a regular user of in ear wired headphones. I'm thinking I might want to go back to that.

I finally figured out there is a Night Light mode for Android like iOS. Shows you how much I know about it.

I bought this Android One mobile because they said 3 years of updates. It's so well supported that after 2 years they moved the support forum to Discord and didn't even bother to set up a tag for my model.

At least someone decided to fix the Android 13 monthly update which hasn't worked since August or September.

I'm using SwiftKey on Android. I am starting to hate it. I don't know how it devolved into "in" comes in as "IN", and so many other idiotic word suggestions.

It's irritating me almost as much as the iOS keyboard.

In general I think virtual keyboards suck.

I thought it was another VR thing but it reads more like AR like the old Google glasses.

One more step before they stick iPhone in your eye.

I have a Nokia upgraded to Android 13. A few months ago my carrier said you need to update your APN settings to continue MMS and data functions. I couldn't update my APN because it looks like it gets all the settings from the carrier or on the SIM card.

This past Sunday I lost MMS and started losing random messages on Telegram and WhatsApp unless I open the app in Wi-Fi. I tried pulling the SIM out, reset APN to defaults - I didn't reset to factory default - and finally resorted to downloading an APK that somehow (if I filled in *all* relevant fields not just the updated MMSC proxy) that added an APN entry that I could finally selectin Android settings again. Why do I have to download an app just to add an APN? Why can't I modify the existing APN? Android is baffling.

Really? Is Nokia still in business?

Really? Is Nokia still in business?

HMD still makes them but I just searched because you piqued me to and it looks like they will retain the Nokia name for special limited edition devices going forward in 2024.

Mine's shattered in the corner and big cracks across the screen but amazingly it still works.

Having a hard time trying to get fingerprint setup (one finger!) for my mother on Android. Samsung. It gets to about 68% and then says sorry go away.

Not only off the grid..but also at my ex hematologist's clinic office once you pass reception.

I turned on Android developer options and restricted it to prioritise only 4 background processes. It seems faster now. Before I was using KillApps to shut down everything every few days.

I'm leaving this co-working space at the end of the month. I will not miss Android and Salto KS. Even a little bit of lag from background processes will cause this app to not open locked doors. I think it needs some kind of GPS to detect your proximity, bluetooth, and some connections to their APIs. I spend at least once a week rebooting my mobile, killing apps, just to open an electronic lock. Once this year their APIs and servers died and you just sat there because the door was locked and your app was useless.

People who have physical fobs seem to have no issues. Although I think on the server dying day they would be screwed too.

Anyone running out to buy iPhone 16e?

I don’t know why my father asked me about it.

My father has been raving about this Telsa mobile phone based on some YouTube videos he saw. Anyone actually intending to buy it?

Pretty sure that rumour was quashed as pure fiction.

The new iOS sucks balls. Suddenly I get lag switching between browser tabs and browser buttons aren’t working.

Yes I'm STRONGLY considering switching to Android, getting a Google Pixel 9, and hacking it. All the best pirated things are only on Android.

What in God’s green earth do you use that isn’t freemium, requires a subscription or free but loaded with deadly ads? I don’t think there are too many apps that are buy once and use forever.

You can get hacked premium apps and services like Spotify, YouTube, and several other mobile apps and games. Not to mention with Android you can run something like GrapheneOS and cut Google out of the equation for the most part.

But why

Well Apple seems to be getting shittier and shittier and I think I might want to try something different. Plus, if I can pirate my way into the change it wouldn’t be a massive financial hit.

What is it that you can get for free?

That’s a bunch of apps. Most of what we typically spend is on subscriptions, no?
Yes but a lot of apps themselves have subscriptions in them. So if the apps are hacked to bypass or allow the subscription, say Spotify for example, then the subscription wouldn’t be necessary.

Does anyone make tablets anymore besides Apple and Samsung? My father has an iPad Pro something and one of the newest Samsung Galaxy. He uses it as a glorified speaker for YouTube literally 24/7 throughout the night so he alternates charging one and the other.

I said there are probably Asus/Acer ones and the cheap Fire ones that my brother uses for his kids to smash up. But ones with large screens that aren't scratched up easily...probably nothing other than those two. (he's blind in one eye and practically blind in the other).

he him something like a jumbo amazon fire and one of those protective kiddie cases that also cover the screen.

I had some issues hooking up my ecobee to my Google Home using my Nokia mobile. I thought maybe because it was an old Android 13 device. But now I realise it's because Edge is my default browser. Once I switched to Chrome as default browser all those API/login screens started working. Ticketmaster started dying in my footy seasons app too.

My Galaxy Buds 2 lost volume with my Nokia android. I looked up how to change volume settings in Android. I checked if the equalizer settings were incorrect. I installed Wearable and Buds Manager to try to control the volume. Ultimately I had to unpair and pair it again and the max volume is maximum again. Very strange a pairing/unpairing would do something like that.

Other bluetooth headsets were working without issues.

I also had fun trying to get a Fitbit Charge 6 working with my mum's Samsung Flip. The amount of updates through the app and on the watch - including one web page on the mobile phone app that said it needed 40 minutes, please don't navigate away from this page (also I have no progress indicator) would test anyone's patience. Ultimately I rebooted the phone and the watch and everything synced. Who designs this stuff...
