Interesting. Decisions on police numbers are made at a more local level.

In the UK police numbers have declined and cheaper, cut-price versions of police have been recruited. We also have elected police commissioners. Voter turn out is low. Police commissioners do not seem to do anything. It seems to mostly be another opportunity for political patronage, not quite a sinecure - but not far off.

I barely touched on the number of different levels of local police, above. For example, each local school district has their own independent police force. The sheer number of layers of redundancy is breathtaking. And trying to get them to all cooperate and not compete is impossible. Hell, we can’t even get all our local cops to agree to a common Tac channel on our 800mhz radio system.

There are private security firms here, as well. But far more common are moonlighting police. In their off-duty hours, most beat cops pick up extra money as rent-a-cops. They wear their normal uniform and maintain full policing and arrest powers - while working security or traffic management for a local business.

No police, no respect for history and the foundations of civilization, just an absolutism and purity that everything from western civilization is bad and must be erased and returned to the year zero...oh wait we've been here before....in Cambodia.

I believe they've already pulled down Colston's statues in Brizzle. Now they're after Churchill too. The Americans were doing this a few years ago to statues of Confederate Generals.

They've been after Colston for quite a few years, They tried to renamed Colston Hall IIRC. Bristol like Liverpool was a slave port.

I'm not sure what it achieves to be honest, and where do you stop? I've always thought it better to put a plaque under the statue to explain what they did. Ironically that would serve the Lefts agenda better than attempting to erase the past.

Notice also the number of white people bouncing around on the thing, you think they'd show some courtesy and allow the BAME's to be the first to kick the shit-out-of-it.

Statues to individuals glorify.

I’m all for taking down statues of civil war leaders and sticking them in a museum where the proper historical context can be presented. Better to erect a public memorial to those who suffered and died at their hands. I mean, they lost the war. We don’t let the Germans raise statues paying tribute to the great Whermacht and SS generals.

Jefferson, Washington, Madison etc leave a legacy that’s a little more complex.
 
I have to wonder where all of this will lead. Does anyone actually believe that a peaceful utopia (or anything close to one) is even remotely possible?
Some kind of Balkanisation must be on the horizon for the US. For Europe (Britain especially) that won't be possible.

Slavers though, as were several other Founding Fathers. My wider point is this: Where do you draw the line. Should we bulldoze the Pyramids, the Coliseum? Where do we stop?

However, you prosecute a couple of schoolboys having a laugh about George Floyd for a ‘hate crime’.

Police have also gone soft. They are afraid to batter criminals in case it is on camera and their bosses take a dim view.

Would be better to occasionally read the riot act and then go in hard. Might need the army unfortunately as coppers aren’t what they used to be.

The existence of the statues is a sign of graciousness rather like the native American place names that have remained in use. They weren't much of a problem before the far-left agitation of recent years and, if I were American, I'd rather see the statues remain and the agitators gone. We have the same type pulling down statues in Britain.

the Founding Fathers’ get statues and Honors for their public achievement, not for being slave holders. Yes, we should teach kids that this tarnishes their legacy. But they still deserve some cred for what they did in the public sphere.

Civil War generals fought to perpetuate an evil system. That’s it. They belong in the history books and the museum, not the town square.

Well, Colston didn't get his statue for being a slaver either, he got his for public works in the city of his birth. So, does he deserves dome cred for that?
