Buhkari is right about the demonization but wrong that Christians or white middle class have nothing to fear from lampooning.
The example of the Private Eye magazine cover reinforces, in my mind, why Islam should strictly disincentivize their own public marginalization. If you are already an unpopular minority, allowing yourself to be dragged down further is of no benefit. See how the Christianity so dominant a half century ago let down its guard and how that went.

How do you propose the Muslim community express their dissatisfaction with being taunted by an antagonistic publication? Write letters to the editor? After you fire bomb their office and they escalate, it only makes sense to escalate as well.
You suggest reasoning with a dog? The Hebdo people proved unwilling to be reasoned with, so less civil expression was next.
 
They should say "we are dissatisfied" and then move on. You know, like rational, fully emotionally formed adults do.

I don't know why you're putting this on Hebdo. They are under no obligation to "reason" with Muslims. Muslims, however, are under the obligation not to murder people. In France at least. Because they clearly wanted to get killed, or were just insanely thinking that they had some protective halo that granted them immunity from repercussions. It was recently expressed that they were incorrect.
Also, it seems to be the consensus and my personal opinion, that this "satire" magazine was just plain not funny. I rarely use the term, but they were just bullies.
At least a few of the shooters spoke French, which is more than immigrants to our country do.
 
I'm with Rustler. They want to come to western countries and suck up all the good stuff, and at the same time want to try and regulate.

They left those countries because its goat-herding level destitute, poor as dirt, backwards, boring, no jobs, economic opportunity, and religious zealots control everything. I suppose the equivocation could be that if any type of satirical Jewish cartoon would get published on the Onion, then you'd have every Jewish group on earth filing lawsuits and decrying antisemitism. That's where it ends, though. Some Jewish rights group isn't going to kill the cartoonist.

I don't have much to contribute to this, but am loving the discussion here.

Random observations;

Freedom of Speech - yes, has to apply universally or not at all. No question Hebdo is distasteful beyond all measure, and insanely offensive (the Prophet making out w/ a Frenchman), but if that's not protected then nothing can be.

Retaliation - 1) have to admire Muslims getting physical and not wanting their beliefs insulted / bullied. Going to blood to defend honor is admirable to a degree. 2) Defending your beliefs to blood is freaking ridiculous. Not much can merit blood-feud-ish action like that. It's deplorable.

Islam/Economics/Geography - Completely agree; Muslims are pouring out of the MidEast because their own policies/practices have made the region stagnant economically (barring basically oil sheiks), and culturally unbearable. You can't escape your roots, and then come to an already established nation and demand that the new host change their policies for your sake - you're the guest. You're the newcomer. You're the Other. Expect to be discriminated against, and take it proudly, knowing you may be mocked, but you won't be killed on a whim anymore either. Then attempt to work WITHIN THE ESTABLISHED SYSTEM in order to better your standing in your new home.

Muslim Apologists - You can't separate the extremists from the non-extremists until some legitimate font of Islam comes out with definitive statements against the terrorist acts. Unfortunately, Islam is not constructed in that same hierarchical manner as the majority of Western religions. So... they're pretty much screwed. Unless there's mounted, open opposition to separate themselves, having these random talking heads on obscure news programs saying "No, we don't support that" won't be enough. I've mentioned it before, being LDS, even if LDS-fringe groups, in no way affiliated with my church, make questionable actions, it becomes my church's responsibility to disavow themselves from the action. Just the way it works. And even then, the majority of the US thinks we still have multiple wives and hate black people (see anti-Romney tactics).

I'm not a supporter of any religion, they're all trouble spots. And what happens with the Palestinians doesn't escape me, which I think is what you're alluding to.

This said, Islam goes around beheading people and claims that if you're not a Muslim and you refuse to convert, they you need to die. I suppose in this respect, Islam sorta tops the list when it comes to it's willingness to impose it's will on others.
 
I remember when the Uyghurs tried to claim independence and detonated three bus bombs in my old city, the PLA surrounded the suspects' village and obliterated it with tanks and a couple of bombs. Retaliate by killing innocent people is not right, but seems like that's the only method to deliver the message to the radicals.

We should radicalise some more by launching punitive strikes from drones on random "terrorists". It's 2015 and I honestly thought I woke up to happy new year 2002 and "you're either with us or against us." The western world has tolerated this ridiculous religion enough. How many more attacks will we suffer and look the other way until we have the resolve to fight back?

Given there were homemade Muslim radicals in US, Canada, Australia and now France, I predict Britain is next.

European nations have enabled immigrants, especially those from their former colonies to not become full-fledged members of the society. Others like Germany have made it easy for immigration and getting on the welfare. Canada has done the same by promoting multi-culturalism. Sort of the anti-melting pot that America is always held out to be.

This liberal behaviour is now coming back to bite countries in the ass. France is incredibly secular as a state yet the Muslim ghettos speak to how messed up things are.

I don't have a sense of if American identity is as important for those who come to America now. Also, I don't have a sense if things are different with the integration of Muslims in America versus other groups.

Thoughts?
 
America forces integration by refusal to pander, no matter what the bleeding hearts would have you believe. It's written off as American arrogance, but really, it's hard to navigate this country not being able to go with the flow. It's a sign of intolerance, but a side effect is people come here to be American generally, and we are incredibly tolerant of anyone who wants to buy into our society.

Coming to America was about when people came for opportunity to work, build a life and succeed. Now, the parasites could give a fuck which asylum country they land in (US, CAN, FR, SWE, UK, etc) as long as they land in one that lets them suck off the teet. These people fake asylum for free shit and have no intention of integrating. And the ones that do work? We've imported a class of cab drivers and IT Indians that smell up the office with microwaved curries and undercut CS college grads.

And don't worry... we have plenty of locally born that don't want to work too. It just compounds the problem.

I've posted this before somewhere, but it's topical... Somalis protesting about their free housing in Sweden, just listen to the kid "we don't want only 3 rooms, we want as many as mommy says". People in Sweden pay a motherload of tax to have social services, and they are right to be furious that all the effort they made to build a stable society is being ruined by the flood of Islam, and it gets over the top when they come in blowing shit up trying to assert their beliefs on others.
