Random Uber stories

If you needed to go pick up your kids in 10 minutes why did you accept a fare that takes 45 minutes?

And in this area people are picky where they want to go for the 45 minutes. Only if it leads towards my home or if it leads away from the gridlocked city.

Door handle was broken in my Uber today. I stood there holding the handle - honestly not wanting to damage his car further. There was an awkward pause and he came out to reattach it. Then he told me when we were in the car it was broken by a rider a few weeks ago. Parts shortage mean it'll be weeks till he gets a replacement.

I'm impressed. This Romanian driver with salt and pepper hair is playing all 2021 or newer pop.

Since Uber lifted the mask requirement, compliance in the Uber cars I've taken is about the same as real life. 50 percent.

Wearing N95 in Uber and driver wears nothing. What is the total protection here?

At least he has nice music on. Ed Sheeran.

This car is so warm and the music so loud. At least the loud music is preventing myself and the driver from dozing off.

Drivers with religious icons in their vehicles. This one has what I have to think are some Hindu icons in a framed photograph on the dashboard.

I'm in a car from the mid 2010s. Katy Perry. Macklemore. One Direction.

Driver is serenading me with his rendition of Mariah Carey ballads.

Actively choosing Cher's Believe in the year 2022.

Very delayed Uber ride with a Hispanic driver who had a fly in his vehicle.

So many groups to blame here:
Large predatory gig economy startups
Uber drivers
Hispanics
Flies

Dont even know where to start hating.

I don't have any issues with Hispanic people. He even said I could recline the rear passenger seat if I wanted to.

The fact there was a fly and he occasionally drank some energy drink and then burped did irritate me.

Going over the speed limit on highways and braking hard but going at speed limit and keeping multi vehicle distance with the automobile in front of him on rural highways/roads was mildly irritating.

Apologies - please find below an ammended list:
- Large predatory gig economy startups
- Uber drivers
- Hispanics (will be ammended if seat reclination is offered)
- Flies
- Energy drinks
- Burps
- Over the speed limit driving
- Hard breaks
- Lack of sufficient multi-vehicle distance with automobiles in front of car being ridden on rural highways (mild)

it is interesting that you felt it relevant though. Seems to be a pattern and possibly the lens through which you view the world.

I try to be aware of people's ethnic backgrounds so I can steer conversation and touch on topics that are relevant to them. If I know some of the language I will try to practise it or at the very least change my salutations or even something as simple as how to pronounce date formats and time.

It's heightened whenever I'm back home because my hometown is one of the most cosmopolitan multicultural places in the world.

If you behave like the person and they believe you are part of their tribe or like themselves, you're more likely to get what you need.

I don’t doubt that your intentions are good, I just find it interesting that race is the prime lens you view the world through. It was hardly relevant to your Uber story. Or your focus on where viruses are first identified (‘the South African strain’).

Did you behave Latino with your driver? Did that help you build rapport? Maybe there were other things he identifies with more that would have made a better conversational touchstone?

He dropped me off - barely - on time. So no, I didn't have to use anything to influence him. My intentions are purely self serving.

There could be other things. Sports. Politics. Single father. Kids. No kids. Religion. But the easiest is race. Unless you're white and have been here a few generations. Then I have to move on the regional accents or some other identifier.

The events and discourse of the past 48 hours have led me to reflect and examine my personal behaviour, actions and beliefs when it comes to my interactions with people of different colour and ethnic backgrounds. I am profoundly sorry for allowing the use of race, culture, ethnicity and other non-visible characteristics of a human being influence my judgment and treatment of others. I humbly recognise humanity was born together on one planet. Segregation and divisiveness have no place in the year 2022. There is no excuse.

I can only hope my apology and vow to accept and treat all people for who they really are will in time be accepted by all those who were affected by my conduct. As the fault is on me, the burden of redemption rests solely on my shoulders to earn a second chance to engaging humanity in an honourable, fair, and discrimination free manner.

People accepting my ride request but clearly they are getting a coffee or at the drive through down the street from me. 3 minutes away plus I need to pay for my fast food and get back to my vehicle.

Sunday ride 1 - Man picks me up. Then we go over a pot hole and he starts cursing at the city, the corrupt politicians, 5 guys filling this hole for 500K with 4 of them watching and smoking. Then he points at his mobile and says he was without signal for 2 days and couldn't drive Uber to work. Government only protects corporations and not the real people. Then he goes on a tangent and says during those days those taxi drivers are robbing people. Overcharging with sh@t cars and cabby plates that are worth nothing. Horrible industry. Finally when he dropped me off at the driving range he said something nice about Tiger Woods.

Sunday ride 2 - A person with a female voice picks me up. I can't really tell because he/she has a mask on. On the rear seats there is a sign saying an artist named Evelyn is starting a new venture and wants anyone, including students, to sign a 2 year contract for commission only sales. Then on the other seat there is a sign that Mickie is trying really hard to get fertility treatments to have a child. She is driving Uber to do it. If you want to contribute here is a QR code for Go fund Me. She will resort to surrogacy and has another 240K to go. Go Fund Me says Evelyn - which is her artist name. Uber says I'm in Mikhail's car.

Tuesday ride - driver starts saying he is working from an insurance broker and knows my company. Then he asked why every insurance company started in Europe. Poor lad is working commission only for life insurance sales, got his licence but is cold calling for leads. Income fluctuates. He never inherited a retiring broker's book of clients. Then he says he wants to buy a franchisee business and has worked here and there in retail. But really he left an automotive company the moment his immigration status cleared up. Without coronavirus subsidies he would have starved on his student visa.

Got into a car this morning and the driver said he knew me. I vaguely remember a car that offered hand sanitizer and werthers for the back seat passenger. He said I'm one of three people in this area he remembers. Two women and myself because of how I dressed. He said he drove me last year.

To his credit he remembered what my office building looks like before arriving at the destination.

This town is driving me crazy. Now the Uber drivers literally ask for cash in the cars. You have issue driving for Uber mate, it's not my bloody issue.

Then he says he has 2 kids, he has been driving since 530, etc. Does this have anything to do with me?

Of course it's classic he takes a call from a medical facility during the ride and his insurance or health coverage has expired and he has to conference in his wife. All on speakerphone.

Uber One. They finally stopped promoting it to me. Why do I have to pay a subscription for an on demand service with fluctuating rates?

I am listening to a driver check for his ex's roadside assistance insurance program. She terminated the whole account including his coverage. He is now asking if his previous patronage affords him any discounts on his own.

Why he is doing this in front of me I have no idea. Must be a rush. I hope his car doesn't break down during this ride.

I am in a Tesla model Y(?). This driver relies more on the display and sensors to make a lane change than his own ocular vision.

I haven't had this for years and definitely before coronavirus. There is a driver and a woman who is supposedly learning. She tried making small talk with me but he told her to knock it off in their language.

I hope he knows officially she needs to drive on her own account.

Flipping madly on my mobile to distract myself from this bloke's horrific lane changes.

Enjoying my Uber ride that comes with a sauna and steam bath.

You know you're in a small town when you start getting the same Uber drivers at least 2x.

Never had a Jeep Wrangler as an Uber. I am feeling every bump on this road. Never mind the wind noise.

Getting asked by the Uber driver if I am a nominee at the insurance awards gala. Apparently he has been dropping people all night.
