The Football/Soccer Thread

I was wondering why Ronaldo was rumoured to be at the White House for the past few days on Twitter. Just him. Now I know. MBS had a dinner there. He is the face of the Saudi diplomatic outreach.

Curacao qualifies for the World Cup. This is what happens when you have 3 countries automatically qualify as World Cup hosts and you admit 48 countries into group play. An island with 150,000 people will need to send 1/3 of their population to pack a stadium.

I thought Arne Slot got the sack according to a tweet...but no, just fake news. He'll have to live with the reality of going from Premier League champions to being beaten by Nottingham 0-3 at home.

Is it customary to have a draw before the teams are even known?
But anyway - so many minnows...the group stage is like a warm up for the stronger sides.

Group A: Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, (winner of playoff between Denmark, North Macedonia, Czech Republic, Ireland)

Group D: USA, Paraguay, Australia, (winner of playoff between Turkey, Romania, Slovakia and Kosovo)

Not sure how MLS home fixtures can start in mid March here when there is still snow and negative double digit centigrade wind chills.

It's -11c. How am I supposed to go to my home season opener in 2 weeks?

"Canada’s opening match tickets are going for at least $6,375 per person on the official FIFA website. Tickets for the other four Group Stage games are starting at upwards of $3,000, while the Round of 32 game tickets start at $4,350."

Having to give up footy tickets for this weekend. But then it looks like the high is 3c.

For anyone wanting to pay thousands and thousands for a World Cup game in my hometown - the interiors to the suites are still unfinished at the end of March.

"The City of Toronto is proposing a $10 charge for admission to its World Cup fan festival after initially promoting it as a free event.

A report presented to the city’s executive committee on Wednesday proposes a ticket tier for the soccer festival, starting at $10 for general admission with VIP passes ranging from $100 to $300."

$100-$300 for an outdoor viewing event...not even next to the stadium?

"New Jersey officials confirm World Cup transit prices: $150 by train, $225 to park"

It's a 15 minute train ride...

I dreamt Arsenal won the Premier League. But then I woke up this morning

DR Congo cancels World Cup training camp because of ebola.

Iran potentially has visa issues and definitely political issues playing on US soil.

It's a grand World Cup!

Let me get my World Cup kit for a country that..never made it into the tournament.

Watching a local footy program. Portugal has better odds winning the World Cup than Germany or Argentina? Spain is number one. France second.

We were voted 3rd best World Cup city for 2026. We're still shutting down the subway on a work day Monday to do maintenance and for World Cup. Kickoff is Friday.
