THE Necktie Thread, Now With Handkerchiefs and Scarves

Let's pretend that a silk tie, lined, got partially soaked in water and dried with the shape a bit messed up and a hair stiff. Is there any advisable action beyond steaming this item?
 
Try gently steaming. Put something inside tie to avoid getting the flat look. An old toilet roll/paper towel cardboard centre works.

or if that doesn't work.

Gently soak WHOLE tie in water and gently swish around to ensure even soaking. Gently dry in towel flat. Gently dry after wards on tie flat.

Never tried whole soak.

Have had pretty good success with a rolled up cotton terry cloth inside and steam though.

I know of some neapolitan shops that bought real vintage super wide ties and wash the silk on the washing machine and then recut and reshape it. So no problem on soaking the silk.

To avoid ruining the tie, put a damp cloth on it and iron over it, do not iron the edges or will ruin the luxirious looking, making it flat pressed.

Bad idea unless you put some cloth in the middle of the tie or undo the stitching. You will put a seam imprint down the front of the tie.

Is obvious this member has no idea about tie making or tie pressing. ( As well as anything else)

What can you expect from a " man" who says a cheapo English shirt beats any high end Neapolitan, here another prove, or a big troll.
I should have not put him out of my ignored box, where he goes again.

Anyhow, you nutbars, thanks for the advice. I finally got around to it. The tacking prevented inserting anything but I rolled up a washcloth, laid the tie over it, and dropped a linen hanky over it then did a light touch with the steam iron and it's a-ok.

That is what I meant by putting something in the middle, meaning between tie and surface it's sitting on. Sorry I wasn't more clear. Pretty much the same operation as pressing jetted pockets on trousers.
 
I pulled out a tie today to wear, an Altea, probably about at least 10 years old. Regular 3-fold, lined, tipped. Just about everything not favoured by iGents.

I forgot how much I liked it. Nice thirst, not shiny. Makes a perfect FIH with an instant dimple. No effort required. Could tie it with my eyes closed. No signs of wear. Think I paid $95 for it. Bought it from an eponymously named independent shop where I once lived. Vittorio Rossi was a suave haberdasher who always had time for people even if they never bought anything. Learned a lot from this fine fellow. Was my haberdasher for years and even when I moved away I still came back sometimes to buy, sometimes to just chat. I could come in after a couple of years and his eyes would light up and he'd say "Frank, Tino, get out here and see who has come to visit us"

Makes me think of how simple life was before I became aware.
 
I'm to lazy to look this up myself. What weight wool is best for ties? Is it 11 oz, 16 oz, or something else altogether?

What do velvet go with?

In other matters, I have a cheap corporate emblematic tie, 100% poly. The pattern is what I love. It has way to much body and the tightest four-in-hand still yields a big lump. Given the fairly robust fabric, I'm wondering if surgery to (partially?) remove the lining is advisable at all?
Don't say Tiecrafters, I mean DIY.

i don't see why not. open it up. remove the lining in the area of the knot. take pictures. post
 
You mean what does the velvet bow tie go with? Pretty much dark blue worsted with some texture, midnight blue dinner suit, dark/midnight blue velvet jackets...
 
Around the same price as Hober base prices. I think within $5 or so. His grenadines are more expensive but they are more flashy in terms of their weave.

I guess it all depends on how well they are made.
 
1. The name David Fin, well the family name, makes me think of the ending of some foreign film.
2. I'm out of the loop on prices as I may have one tie that was actually bought new at full MSRP... but the NYC angle makes this pricier than say Hober. I think this is Brooks Brothers price level.
3. I'm totally with Sartodi Napoli Sartodi Napoli in thinking that the pattern should be centered. This is not good.

Ah, forgot to take photos. It turns out there was a little extra layer if lining in the knot area , and I just discarded that. In hindsight, I think the job would've gone much better with a curved needle instead of a straight one, right HenryC Sartodi Napoli Sartodi Napoli ?
