He had a bolt hold planned, which shows you how much commitment he had/has to UK PLC. Needs to be got rid of now as of opening of business Monday, which is well on the cards. Too much sleaze with these Tories, sadly, Labour offers diddly-squat as an effective alternative.

Which leaves us with the class clown: Boris. Brilliant at times, others Pepper Pig type shallow gaffs. But he's on a roll at the moment and as point man in the European response - marginally, being the UK remains an island nation - he's the best we've got. Which likely shouldn't give us much comfort.

I was going to let one of the forum members from the Continent comment but I believe during her previous campaign her party took a loan from a Russian bank. The bank folded and the debt and its collection was passed on to a Russian firm. Throughout all of it her party never started repayment and the Russian firm brought the party to court to settle.

It was not a simple 200K to get a dinner table at a fundraiser.

Something like that, the loan was passed on. But it appears they haven't paid any of it back.

But like Thierry Baudet here in the Netherlands, she'll prove too toxic at the ballot box. And he too has some dodgy links with Russia.

Kind of, but she does have a vote winning ticket for the under 30's - she will abolish income tax for them. That's definitely a winner in a super high tax country like France.

Whilst I agree it was awful hypocrisy, these are despite the mistaken policy of lockdowns and imposing misery on everyone, misdemeanours and are overtaken by events, no one cares about the parties anymore.

What matters: the Brits had an agile ability to be first with sanctions against Russia and first with real weapons to the Ukraine. That trumps the above.

I see how that would be the perception from abroad, particularly from a right-wing point of view, but it feels here that the sentiment is that everyone is pretty much fed up with Boris, his bs, and his disregard for the rule of law.

People who bring up the rule of law as an argument for anything usually don't understand the implications behind the word and are not even aware that as a legal and philosophical concept it has different interpretations. It's not a concept with a single meaning and it all depends on what definition you use. Because otherwise, it's a bit of a weak argument.... turning Jews into sawdust was not against the rule of law in a certain country at a certain point in time.
Hiding the same Jews in the attic was very much against the rule of law in certain countries at a certain point in time. As far as I am aware Boris is not doing anything against the rule of law, in the way he (and most heads of sate) understand it.

Reductio ad hitlerum notwithstanding - there are laws, and Boris and his cronies break them. And my comment was that the sentiment here in London, or at least the people I usually talk with, is that his shortcomings vastly outpace his strengths. Other than Pimpy, I haven’t heard anyone praise him for his war-time efforts as redeeming of the above. Pretty simple to understand.

Breaking the law has very little to do with the rule of law, it does to a certain extent and it depends on what side we are looking. That being said I get that what it means for most people is: "muh, there are laws and it's naughty to break them". It's not really what the expression is about.

However, it's not a big deal because I do understand what you are talking about, and it's the fact that you are butt-hurt because some head of state has "broken the law" and got caught. So what? Have you never sped? Have you never downloaded a movie? Have you never made photocopies of a book? Have you never consumed "illicit" things? There are so many laws you break them without even knowing it and you most likely do that several times a day. It's called legislative inflation which turns the life of people like me in a nightmare because I then have to explains to halfwits that no, they don't need to draft another law because some other halfwits are getting emotional about something and are asking for a law by protesting or something. Because, we all know it, laws fix things, right? It doesn't matter if you could reach the same result with a law that's already in place. They want A LAW. Because remember, law fix things, not people. (Spoiler, the reason why a girl can walk around alone freely at 4 am without being afraid of getting rapped in Osaka and not in Paris doesn't have to do with "the law".)

Do you really believe that political leaders, all over the world care about "the law"? Do you think they don't do a lot of tax dodging? Do you think they don't "exchange favors"? Or that they don't go partying until 4 am without following their own covid procedures? (wink wink Finland and all of the others).
Have you ever been involved in politics at any level? Do you you truly believe they care about you? Well, ideally they should, but they don't. Most just care about being reelected if you believe in the public choice theory. In any case, it's not what makes a good leader. What matters is if they are capable to make the country richer, to keep people employed, to keep the population homogeneous and healthy and to actually develop what they have instead of plundering it. I am not saying that Boris does that, I don't even live in the UK, but that's truly all that matters.

Boris broke the law, but the law itself was a bad one and the issue, as I see it, is one of hypocrisy and that's a moral issue. A very important one, I agree. But Partygate has been overtaken by events. And we all get it now: lockdowns very bad policy, clapping for the NHS like performing seals - rather embarrassing in hindsight and no consideration to the strategic issue of the just-in-time economy, somewhat idiotic and very problematic now.

The parties themselves, certainly the garden one, looked a rather tame and staid affair, one you might refer to as after work drinks in the office. Really, part of your job, and to get some rapport and esprit de corps with colleagues. Mostly harmless, unless you get pissed and photocopy your private parts in a state of high drunkeness.

By the laws we lived by then, it was wrong, but the nuanced response now should be...oh well, we fucked-up in our over zealousness to clamp down on freedom, human interaction and our desire for Zero Covid which we know is not possible. So it was all bad policy at the starting gate.

It's the sleaze that needs to be targetted with absolute ruthlessnes, not these No. 10 so called parties. I'm referring to the Matt Hancock's of this world - who nominally resigned over a technicality not social distancing whilst kissing his lover - whose pub landlord of his regular drinking haunt, out of the blue became a multi-millionaire overnight with lucrative PPE contracts, same with his lover's brother.

I mostly agree but to piggyback on your point, the sleaze happens on Boris' watch with Boris' mates and the buck - at least way back when honour seemed to matter- stops with Boris.

I never had time for Boris - his long and ignominious public record is there for all to see. Let me be clear and let's be honest here, Boris is not a conservative.

The Tories have held power for a dozen years and counting and what is there to show for it.

We have more pressing issues right now yes but we can walk and chew gum at the same time. If us normal folk broke a law- no matter how stupid- we'll not be let off the hook.
