The SF/AAAC/FNB trainwreck thread

I feel similarly. I'm not a fan or regular reader, and of course there's a lot of schlock on there, but I don't have negative associations with PS. That could change with time and more exposure I guess. I wonder if Dropbear Dropbear has been nursing his disdain for an extended period of time. It reads that way.

After seeing the quoted instagram post I went and read the corresponding article on his site; the third photo, of him standing outside holding an espresso, made an impression on me. It compelled me to reflect on fatherhood; I think it's a good photograph.

My family is without question the most joyful and important thing in my life. Why is this relevant to Permanent Style? This demographic is not well-represented in the images of fashion in general, and menswear in particular.

That rings true for me.

I'm not a father. Are you?
I've two children, both grown up now. Personally if I was given the choice of doing a photo shoot in great clothes with either;
A: Semi naked women while drinking whiskey
B: My kids

It'd be A. No doubt about that

This is because an intelligent father will not post easily-traced images of his young, vulnerable children on the public internet for commercial gain.

I look at his site occasionally and I do get the feeling that the jig is up - or at least may be heading that way.
Until the last year it seemed like he was getting a new suit made almost every week (what does he do with them all?)
Now travel to Italy is restricted and he doesn’t appear too interested in English suits, so his themes seem to have shifted of necessity. Also surely I’m not the only reader bored to death with seeing him in yet another brown suit made by some unknown ‘artisan’ at vast cost.
He may have a problem sucking-up to the English tailors now and with his Italian gig effectively finished for the duration, perhaps, he sees the only option now is slumming it. Bringing expensive lounge shell suits to the masses. It's an impressive new gig.

He's mistaking imagery designed to excite and entice for the mundane substance of existence.

Why are images of menswear under representing the family man? Does that need to be acknowledged, is that something you want to see: kids birthday parties, changing nappies in your three piece suit, your tie getting ruined with baby food getting slobbered all over it and vomit?

Not something I want to see and I say the above as a father.

Wow so sad, the poor man was never himself.....
Absolutely spot on with this comment. His lack of any sense of self had him jumping from bandwagon to bandwagon in a manner so obvious it was laughable...

“Vox is popular and his jackets are all 3r2 so I’ll get all mine made that way”
“Foo is popular and all his shoes are Alden shell brogues so I’ll buy a pair in every color”
“Hipsters are really cool with their mangy beards and tats. I’ll grow a huge one and cover myself in shit ink.”
“Raw denim is really cool - I’m gonna start dipping so I can get a tin fade in my jeans”.
“Manchester City are top of the league. I have zero connection to them but I’m gonna start mentioning how I’m a huge fan”

And then finally ...

“I’ve sold all my gear and would be happy in a black Zara suit now”

Reminds me of my friend’s dachshund puppy who would energetically chase after everything thrown its way. Would have been happy to chase down a hand grenade!

Manchester City will not hold his interest for long. There is the novelty factor, but he is sitting in the away section so cheering City is not advisable. He would have been better to go in the home stands at less fashionable club -say Preston North End. Better still he should have stuck to American sport, though he has already switched New York teams (between Rangers and Islanders I believe). The trouble is, while it lasts, he follows whatever is his current interest big time. He even got into clothes manufacture.

A nice chap but misguided.

Manchester City always seems to attract a certain disaffected sort. It use to be for those who were into a bit of aggro but wanted to keep it away from home, or those who hated football, had zero sport IQ, but were insecure enough to feel the need to feign an interest to keep up appearances.

Never understood it myself.

Crompton may have to take it down several levels. The high end may not offer him much now. If he could promote himself as a menswear writer and influencer it might help. Go after a Boden plus crowd - middle class families who will pay a little bit more for casual clothing. The children could help promotion though he says the wife is not a clothes person.

My understanding that it was all a side line and he had a day job?

If he does embrace the casual, he has a big problem as his whole physique, hairline and visage is not built for being a clothes horse for street wear. Then he will have a problem bouncing back into luxury bespoke. With all his credit gone, he's just another blogger. To be fair, at this stage, there may be no real competition. But I sense a style and reinvention coming on as he knows the jig is up. Dad's lifestyle blogging awaits.

I think it started out as a sideline to either financial or legal journalism. I thought he dropped the day job. He could always return to it. No harm in still doing a bit of work on clothes as well if opportunities are more limited.

City has always been well supported, even when they languished in the lower divisions they regularly pulled in 30,000+ at Maine Rd IIRC.

I'm not sure I see SC reinventing himself; it seems he's settled on the project of dressing down tailoring.. I imagine one could spend a long while trying to perfect that. There aren't many contemporary models. I predict he'll continue commissioning bespoke clothing while simultaneously chronicling his newfound interest in tame, high end casual RTW clothing, but I don't really consider that out of his wheelhouse. Would be interesting to see a drastic shift.
Have you seen mates reinvent themselves over time? That sounds interesting.

The problem is making the tame, high end RTW clothing sound interesting.

With bespoke he could wax lyrical about the long-standing skills of Naples’ finest craftsmen. Not too many had experienced this so he was less likely to be challenged.

If it is just a super expensive jumper or pair of jeans punters will more readily compare it to what they buy. So he will need to justify it with materials, provenance or workmanship. There is less mystique to fall back on.

Well, this definitely shows you haven't been following him for long. He is never settled into anything, he reinvents himself every time the freebie gravy train start to lose steam, and hops to a new set of suckers.

The idea of switching teams is so alien to me I don’t even have the vocabulary to explain my lack of understanding. But it further exemplifies my point about about his constantly chasing after ... something. It’s got to be the sign of something fundamentally lacking in your personal character.
Either that or some weird abstraction of ADD!

Who was it that said “if you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything”?

Wow so sad, the poor man was never himself. Doesn't sound like Mafoofan was either.

The Foo also underwent some sort of pre-mid-life reinvention, bought a Porsche 911 GT3 (allegedly at his wife's urging) and started dressing in skinny jeans and a black leather double-rider leather jacket from Saint Laurent (the reinvented, "streetwear" version of Yves Saint Laurent, or YSL).

Hard to know whether it's what he actually feels comfortable in, or whether it's just some sort of act, or whether he's seeking an identity.

I'd be guessing that it is some sort of act and seeking an identity. Lots of people are like that these days. Is he really `that guy'?? Can he pull it off?

gotta give him points for trying hard though. He has always tried to be somebody, but obviously he hasn't made it yet because he is still trying to be `that guy'.

Foo recently admitted that all his bespoke adventures were just an extended stint of cosplay and now goes to work in the ‘midtown uniform’ of a Patagonia fleece vest. How have the ‘mighty’ fallen! Surprised he stated the other day his wife doesn’t work.
I thought most of his wealth came from her. His salary was under discussion on here once and while it seems he has a well paying job, it’s not one that can support $80k watches, $200k sports cars etc.

It's not how much you earn, but how much you have as disposable income.

I remember some menswear blogger boasting that he bought a new Porsche on their wife's urging, was it Foo? It seemed utterly unbelievable at the time, as it does now. Old money doesn't do Porsche's and I've yet to meet a woman interested enough in sports cars to prompt hubby to buy one.

KRS 1 said it nicely:

"Lesson four: sell your image, never sell a record
Image is respected, records come and go
and get collected
Even the records of platinum artists, that used to rip shop
can be bought, for a quarter at the thrift shop"

And 200k isn't buying these things and still having a house and family, etc...
Most definitely not. Unless you have a financial vehicle in which you pay no or little tax, the other alternative, is that you've inherited enough to pay for the house and other extras so your job is your pocket money.

As I keep on telling the uninitiated the more you earn the less you seem to have: you have a shed load of assets (you can't touch), family that depend on you, the spouse is working and if you're lucky has the same/more/tax free position compared to you and yet....you seem to have the exact same pocket-money that you had when you were aged 28-31.

It's one of life's lessons.

Of course, if you're earning half-a-million or more a year, the above doesn't apply and you can do what you want. Including bringing your mistress into your happy home with the wife and kids and they'll all just have to suck it up.

Where does this happen, or to whom?

Where does this happen, or to whom?
I know one example of that, a surgeon, he's moved his mistress into the family home and has made the appropriate financial arrangements to ensure she gets her share in the event of his death.

The rich can be a lot more blatantly arabesque in their lifestyle choices. If they want to.

I would have though the separation of wife and mistress part of the attraction.

You guys don´t have a life or other prime idiots to bash as Fuck Fok and the other psychopath dieworkshill?

At least Foo was not a psychopath, a bit histrionic, but I do not think he is a evil doer as this other two are.

Foo is definitely not a psychopath.

At his law school, his soon to be wife took anti-semitic abuse and him by association from his fellow students on the basis that he was going out with her. It was posted on the university department internal discussion website. It was leaked.

Everyone of them should have been kicked-out and in this day and age, they would be cancelled. Retrospectively. Except Foo's then girlfriend belongs to the wrong type of religion for abusers to be cancelled for. So I guess they're safe. But they shouldn't be, unless they've apologized to them both.

On Unstyleforum as well there is a lot of those damn leftists socialists antisemitics but since the owner is a psychopath and chinavirus, he lets that and doesn´t bans his feet lickers.

The Dieworkwear guy has a 300+ page appreciation thread?! I find that bizarre, especially in light of the fact that I have not once seen a picture of him and his posts contain almost nothing of substance.

Exactly right!
One of the great mysteries of DWW is that he has a seemingly popular blog positioning himself as some sort of style guru and countless sycophants on SF and yet there appears to be no photographic evidence of what he even looks like! It’s an impressive feat.

Dai Wirke-Ware is just a prat but I think he might part own that site now. Hence sycophantic ‘appreciation’thread.

Not sure why he has a name that makes him sound Welsh though.
