WDYBT: What Did You Buy Today

Two RL Purple Label shirts - in the sale of course - quite Modish ones, blue and lavender pinpoint button-downs. About the price of T&A each. Also two of the ''Earth'' Polos, 100% recycled plastic. I do hope they've been treated to stop static electricity.

Whichever way you swing, it has to be agreed, Purple Label is an impressive off-the-rack line for a big ubiquitous brand, but so crazily expensive.

Meanwhile, with all the shops shut, I've given Christmas presents of money to the kids and the missus. Have to be careful, the missus is so tight, if I gave her too much she would just transfer it into the savings account, so figured out just enough for her to spend on herself. Already told the kids it's in your bank account and there to be spent between now and Christmas and especially if you want it before Christmas. To which the eldest retorted I'm saving up for a scooter.

Hes a credit to you Pimp. If he is 15 tell him not to bother with a Vespa 50S. I still feel depressed when I think about the kids on racers over taking me on the road after school on the way home. Best to wait for the PX 125, and bang a kit on it.

He's a she. Not really keen on her getting a scooter, but if she sticks to the bike lanes then it should be safe enough.

Here's the Purple Label button-downs, very Mod indeed:

And here's the Earth Polo's and I'm going to sport the red one today under quarter zip jumper:

Interesting but please for the love of god don’t wear this under a quarter zip.

Cos it would look shit!
I don’t much care for quarter zips anyway as they are somewhere ‘in between’.
But they always look shit as ‘layering pieces’ whether worn over a polo or the way Biden wears them over a shirt and tie under a suit or blazer.
So many better options.
If I’m wearing a LS polo and still cold I’m wearing a jacket not another later with a very unflattering collar.

When I had them on, I liked how they looked.

I actually was walking by and saw them on a mannequin in the window and went inside to check them out. Didn't make the purchase, but I may stop by and get them.

Really like the look.

I'm not such a fan because they're basically ripping off the classic Adidas Samba design but, instead of three stripes, they've got some sort of "T" symbol.

Of course, I know that all fashion is derivative etc etc but I can't help but think that if you can get the original design (and if it fits), then you may as well do so.

I see that now.

I have had a few pairs of Sambas over my lifetime. I didn't see the rip off when I first saw them in the window last wknd. I just liked the color and liked them even more when I tried them.

If you like them and they fit, buy them. It is for your enjoyment anyway.

I probably will. I didn't on Sunday as I had some running around to do and I passed the store at 11am. Didn't want to have to carry the box around.

Also, I rarely post.."should I buy" pics. If I like it, I buy. For this one, I was just curious as to what the masses thought.

I've just bought these on the retro trainers/sneakers front:

This takes me way back to early mid-80s, the casual terrace look which was all the rage.

I want something for wearing around the house, not slippers, but effectively so when working from home. Not intended to be worn outside, but a little bit more or different than sporting a pair of velvety slippers or just socks.

I do sorta like those....but I can't bring myself to wear shoes/sneakers in the house. I am a sock/slipper/bare household.

Hear Hear. One thing I don't miss after leaving the states is there awkwardness that came about when you asked guests to politely take off their shoes when they come into your home.

I am partial to bare foot inside. Though I have slippers which I rarely use.

🔝🔝 Top top look. LKP LKP would be proud!

Personally I'm horrified by men over 25 in branded trainers. The older they get the more they look like mutton dressed as lamb.

Question then: Is it ever acceptable for a man in advanced years (maybe over 30) to sport trainers in public, except for athletic pursuits?

The Shooman The Shooman might recoil in horror but trainers in general are pretty comfortable for knocking about!! I can't justify spending silly money on these pretty disposable items (for me, over say, 150 dollars) so that leaves one with 'branded' trainers for the most part.

Are they comfortable? The sole looks to be flat like a Converse gym shoe and not cushioning like runners.

Really? While we don’t have many guests I’m the house, if someone walks in and sees the shoe racks by the door out our shoeless feet, they usually get the idea pretty quickly.

I don’t wear slippers inside but I have a pair of short uggboots for trips to the mailbox in winter.

No and I’d drop that to over 15.

I think their ok if their a plain colour and minimalist like common projects type thing. I have two pairs, a pair of Todds in brown suede. Had them five years or so, worn them quite a bit and they will last another 5 easy I should think. Bullit proof. Got them at 50% off, which was still top dollar for me for a pair of sneakers. My other pair are John Lobb, Levah hi tops bought from their factory shop. Great with cords or denim. But branded look Kiddish on a grown man.

Oh yes. And I studied and have lived in a few states across the US. It is more culturally acceptable to wear shoes indoors over there. Clearly, not at yours and kudos to you.

15?

You see, I could never spend silly money for a John Lobb trainers or even current Common Project prices. At 60% off, maybe.

I have about six trainers. Four are minimalist, generic , no overt 'branding' and the other two are a New Balance leather and canvas horror and the other are retro Adidas (original logo only, on the tongue of the shoe). None cost more than 150 euros in today's money.

I rarely wear them except on my evening walks, hiking (well, loose definition of 'hiking' ) and general ambulating/errands.

Though, I am very much tempted to buy a pair of Yeezys!

J/K

I would not spend on trainers at full wack either. JL were out their factory shop at 200 pounds. Todds runners were 50% off. Think they came in at around 150. TBF the Todds at full wack would not be so bad. I have worn them in all weathers, upper has held up well above my expectations and the sole is still solid. Like I say I wear them quite a bit. Nike or some such brand at the same price point would have been fucked by now.

It’s probably just the odd little era I grew up in, when the cool kids wore doc Martin’s and not sneakers with jeans, but I am still not prepared to wear athletic shoes when not doing athletic things.

Might be the case with me as well, I was into that casual thing so the latest branded trainers certain models were all the go, often changing at a lightning pace. When I see someone my age in a pair of Trim Tram or whatever I just think prick.

If you grew-up in the north west of England in the early 80s, you couldn't be cool without the latest Adidas trainers. And they had to be Adidas combined with 501's and if you were super cool, a Lacoste or Sergio Tacchini tracksuit top. It was never full-on sportswear, well for about three months when break dancing was a passing fad in '83.

Doc Martin's were still associated with the bovver-boy skinhead types. A mate of mine had a pair and was boasting about the air cushion in the soles. I mentioned to my dad and he exclaimed ''You're not going to be getting a pair!''

For those Spezial's I paid €65 with shipping. Not bad. But whether I will end up actually getting some wear out of them as intended, is debatable. I've only one other pair of trainers - Converse All Stars, hardly worn them, look crap and feel uncomfortable. The other recent pair I bought, was back in the mid-2000's, New Balance, totally disintegrated earlier this year.

1983-1985: Doc Martin’s were indie/alternative cool or for cops walking the beat. After that they were so common that most kids wore them as part of their school uniform.

Sneakers: nerds

Dock Siders: Preppy rich kids

Desert boots: bogans/hoodlums

Creepers: subculture types

Not where I grew up(NYC) and still live.

Many posts in the shoe thread make me recoil in horror, especially those casual boots l see posted so often. As for trainers being comfortable for knocking about....I couldn't even tell you....I wouldn't even know what they feel like. I've done shoos ever since l was a kid, never did sneakers on sports days either....never liked the way they looked.

Last month I ordered a custom studded belt, which arrived today. I went for something a little more rock and roll and a lot less western than the ones you see around here. Legendary Vintage Belts did an amazing job.
