What's Making You Happy Today?

We adopted a stray kitten over the weekend, for the kids. I wanted another dog after the last one died, but this is certainly fun.

The LG OLED55CX6LA arrived and was installed today. Looks mega compared to the Loewe which I remember was supposedly the same size, well, something must have been missing there. Especially on the sound too, which is cinematic.

The missus, mother-in-law and kids are ecstatic. Don't know why I am getting happy about it, as I will be lucky to get 2 hrs on it a month.

She’s cute but still totally feral. It’s all hisses and scratches for now.

jesus how many animals are you up to now?

Actually down in numbers. Only have 5 dogs now as a number of the seniors have passed on and my big old thoroughbred passed away a couple of weeks ago. So 4 donkeys, 4 mini horses, 4 ponies and cats have reached steady state of about 20.

Who is that in the background behind Kaiser Bill? A younger Churchill as Lord of the Admiralty?

Yes its Churchill. I'm not sure what position he held at the time of the photo though.

I did a bit of searching and found a couple of sources that gave a year for the photo - one said it was from 1906, another from 1909. He was apparently observing military manoeuvres in Silesia (in modern-day Poland) along with the Kaiser.

However, Churchill was a junior minister, the Under-Secretary of State for Colonial Affairs, in 1906 and then he was the President of the Board of Trade in 1909, so it's a bit of a mystery as to why a) he would have been observing military matters with the German Emperor in either of those positions; and b) why he would have been wearing a military uniform when he'd left the army as a lieutenant in 1900.

Of course, I suppose it's entirely possible he could have worn his old uniform for ceremonial purposes - I don't know whether that would have been acceptable or not.

Churchill was then the First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 to 1915.

Interestingly, the above photo is part of a larger photo:

And here's another photo of Churchill walking with the Kaiser, most likely on the same occasion:

...top...top re-surch!!!

I think Marion Cotillard is ageing better than her.
I find Eva Green something of a paradox. For me, she doesn't have the natural beauty of say, Margot Robbie, but she is very photogenic and attractively quirky. She's the kind of woman I find myself staring at, which is very rude. She also has that English hauteur down to a 'T'. The French and English are closer to one another than they are inclined to admit and the reason they are facinated by, and despairing of each other...

Cotillard doesn't do anything for me I'm afraid.

Someone delivered a case of wine to this office yesterday. Correct address but incorrect recipient. Probably a previous tenant. She came by today to pick it up and was glad to have recovered the shipment.

Yesterday the Brazilian office cleaning lady gave me some kind of Portuguese chocolate cake.

Probably pretty sad these are the two happy moments in my life from yesterday to today.

Really enjoy Rory Sutherland's musings:

He's right on how the ITV networks were much better at regional news and representing the provinces.

Kind of like a modern Juliette Binochet.

A couple of good articles, and some salient criticism of Dawkins' style of argument.

I find all too many like to cherrypick - to look for examples of the sort of thing that they don't like, and then use those examples to generalise about a whole area. Dawkins is similar in the above piece. As an example, he takes a fringe view that exists in a small part of the humanities (if it comes from dead white males, it's wrong) and extends that to a large swathe of current society.

This is lovely, but I can help but think that it's likely also a classic case of wishful anthropomorphism.

Bringing in Trump weakened Dawkins position there. It politicized a position that should be kept within the scientific method, unless it's promoting eugenics, genocide, or scientifically unsound.
