What's Making You Happy Today?

Now to the Lord sing praises
All you within this place
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace
This holy tide of Christmas
All others doth deface
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy
Comfort and joy
Oh, tidings of comfort and joy

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2020, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Pauline Kael's essay on Cary Grant from the 1975 New Yorker:

Pauline Kael's essay on Cary Grant from the 1975 New Yorker:

Had to laugh at this: ''Grant was English, so Hollywood thought he sounded educated and was just right for rich playboys, but he didn’t speak in the gentlemanly tones that American moviegoers think of as British; he was a Cockney.'' He was from Bristol of course, but his accent and manner is refined mid-Atlantic.

There's two new biographies coming out about him. Also a different type of English actor, Kenneth More.

Grant had the cool before it was even invented. David Niven in his autobiographies refers to him as a mystery, citing Grant's adventures with LSD in the sixties.

His London accent was picked up when he joined the circus. I don't think even the Americans would confuse a Brizzle accent with a Cockney one. The Brizzle (West Country) accent being the basis of the classic Pirate accent.

I thought the most famous cockney in Hollywood is Michael Caine.

Dunno - when I was in USA it alternated between me being told I had picked up English quickly and spoke it well and being asked for my autograph as I was obviously Paul McCartney - by the hair, clothes and accent.

Confusing an Aussie accent with a Scouse accent, albeit quite a soft south Liverpool version? LOL.

Every damn day someone asks if I am English/Irish/Scottish/Bostonian/South African. The manager of a little TexMex place we used to eat was convinced I was French.

I got asked if I was Australian in Salt Lake City.

Mind you, I was wearing a polo shirt with the logo of a Cairns scuba diving operator.

Indeed, but he also does a tremendous upper class accent as seen in Zulu, for which the posh actors never forgave him.

I remember a couple of young apprentices had just got back from New York and were boasting about how great a time they had. Which included references to people telling them how they sounded just like The Beatles and how wonderfully funny and endearing they were. Seems incredulous now, but that was back in 1987. Which makes it just about doable.

Went by my tobacconist today an hour before New Year's Eve closing and he tossed an extra pack of cloves in for free.

So he was saying "Happy new year, Fwiff - and here's an extra opportunity to get lung cancer, free of charge!"? ;)

No free lung cancer insurance?
I switched to herbal clove cigarettes years ago.

I don't think I am getting known carcinogens related to tobacco cigarettes but since herbal cigarettes are unregulated I am sure I am getting something else.

You're not getting nicotine, but I'm sure that you're still getting tar and other particulate matter that's carcinogenic.

If you're not actually inhaling nicotine, I'm not sure why you'd smoke - much better to just give it up!

Agreed. To save paying the entrance fees, which my tax should cover, we went in on a Sunday. Somehow we ended up in the choir stalls on the altar. It would then have been rude to leave before the end of the service.

We also stayed in the hotel next to it. They ran out of marmalade. One of our party insisted on it and they had to go out and buy a jar. It was brought our table, then other guests gradually came over and asked if they could have some. It was like something out of a Bateman cartoon or an episode of Fawlty Towers.

I would take care walking down Steep Hill in the snow though.

The little fella will be fine. Is he still hiding?

He’s a lot more comfortable with us now - takes naps on the sofa and will sit on a lap getting pats. He still hisses at me every morning - and transitions to purrs within minutes.

Is he housetrained as yet? Don't forget to take him to have him de-sexed, too.

He was ‘house trained’ when we nabbed him from the wild, which was pretty incredible. Instantly figured out the little box thing.

Definitely getting him neutered before he is ever allowed outside.

he looks like a white tiger, so I wanted to call him Tiger. One kid wants to call him Snow and the other wants to call him Skywalker.
