All About Watches

That's verri sexi. Not an original one, right?

I really like this. If some people like two-tone to wrist, I would have to say steel watches with gradient blue dials are my special peccadillo - the TV shape on this one just caps it off.

Just broke my third strap on my G-shock GA-100. The "top-rated tactical watch." The mechanism is unkillable. The bands suck balls.

Time to get serious.

I ordered a composite bracelet with deployment clasp, the 6900 series band. They're both 16mm lugs; they should line up the same.

Gonna make this little bastard into my zombie apocalypse watch. I'll post pics when the mod is complete. Should be 2 weeks for delivery.

All three resin bands have torn away from the bottom lug. Repeatable point of failure. Never a good thing. I'm hoping the composite band holds up better; I hate the look of a NATO strap.

I really like this with the new band. Still a hideous watch -- I'd never wear it with anything other than a uniform or a T-shirt -- but the new band raises the badassery quotient way past a NATO strap and it's ridiculously comfortable.

Question Rain Man Rain Man since you are high speed low drag and have velcro all over your outfit, why didnt you go for suunto?

Because every swinging dick around here has a Suunto Core. The SPS's (self-propelled sandbags) wear digital G-Shocks, and the chiefs wear Explorers.

Plus, I'm a sentimental cuss. I don't know that I could bring myself to buy another field watch as long as this one is still functional. It has street cred -- it has some nice dings, and unthinkable grime ground into it from six countries: forensics would find sand, blood, hydraulic fluid, explosive residue, toxic waste, Scotch, and camel shit. And while I could get a new one and "break it in," I promised my wife that once I commission I will start avoiding the exact kinds of unpleasant and boxers-soiling circumstances that tend to fuck up a nice new watch.

In this kinder, gentler, participation-trophy, garrison mentality, where commanders are telling their troops to remove their combat patches because the younger troops and REMFs feel left out, a beat-to-crap old watch with blood and sand in the cross-hatchings may be the last piece of cred us salty bastards get to carry. I hope to find a jeweler who can make me a custom-milled backplate so I can engrave my tours in it.

I like the look of this - though for the price I wish the bracelet was integrated into the case better. I understand it is copying the old vintage Constellations but the cheap gold-filled bracelets on those old models really aren't worth replicating IMO.

Time for a new leather nato for my Hamilton. I do love cxl8, but it might be too soft, thick and markable for a strap. Kangaroo? It appeals to my Aussie roots, for damn skippy. Thoughts?

Initially I would have thought Kangaroo to not be suitable for watch straps because of stretching. But on doing some searching it seems like it lends itself well to watch straps.

Somewhere in the annals of StyleForum I remember reading someone who said metal watch bands are casual and leather bands are for dress. Is that true?

It would depend on the metal and the type of leather band obviously - a jubilee bracelet is more formal than a cordovan NATO. Typical SF generalisation.

Okay - it's stainless steel bands. I have a Rolex, a Seiko (I'm told the cheap one) from mum, and my Omega I inherited from my father and his father.

I mean I like leather straps but travelling, I tend to pick one watch rather than bring a cotterie of them.
