Get rid of cops and prisons. Protect and serve. You know we have some experience with community policing up here and alternative sentencing. Indigenous police so its not the RCMP caucasian, Indian (subcontinent), black, arab coppers. Healing circles, healing lodges, banishment to an island.

Though Americans generally think we a socialist country rather than a social democracy, our right is not as right and our left is not as left. Even the NDP is not as rabid as the US left which is seizing power, protesting or supporting what is going on. So it could happen here with debate. The RCMP commission has already announced that there is systemic racism in the RCMP. The PM has already said he is concerned by the Fort Chip Chief who you have already posted about. Something will happen there as the Chief is tight with Hollywood and Bishop TuTu. And he has money.

As for policing and me, my white privilege gets me no hassles but neither does the RCMP come in a timely manner being 50 km away from me so I don't see anymore of a more rapid response from the funded-from-the-defunded community flying squad of crime counsellors. But hopefully this translates into more favourable self-defence laws so I can have priori peace of mind for pulling the trigger. You already have this in the US so you are ok because thank god America is the place where not only the criminals have guns and you have so many spares you send us most of our illegally imported guns that our criminals use.

Of course rape is underreported. Rape isn't going away and if you defund the police you won't have regular and cop rapists so that makes it easier to compile stats. What is the alternative to incarceration of rapists? Community service? Good idea, just don't them shovel snow and mow lawns in industrial areas.

I am a firm supporter of community service as a form of restorative/reparative justice. Work off your sentence. Learn though your sentence.

But honestly Grand Potentate Grand Potentate I am willing to consider the defunding of police if that side tells me how serious crime and serious offenders will be dealt with in post-police society. The Minority Report is still fiction. Or are there serious offenders anymore?

and thats fair. totally fair. the problem is, at the moment, there are really only two sides on this - reform and defund/abolish. here in the US, reforms have been a total and abject failure. today Biden was on twitter demanding that we ban chokeholds, just hours after a black man was shot in the back fleeing from the cops who were trying to arrest him for the crime of sleeping in a car in a fast food parking lot. just shot him down like a dog. but of course, the fact that we aren't using chokeholds any longer will really put a big dent in that type of behavior won't it? its all just performative bullshit to allow the gang in blue to continue to brutalize the population through ever elaborate excuses.

now if we get rid of them and use a community based model will that stop violent offenders? absolutely not. some shitheads are going to do crimes and nothing we do will ever change that. but isn't trying to figure that out while not having our black and brown brothers and sisters murdered a better alternative than constantly wringing our hands over trying to change the system that's incapable of changing?

My major problem with your stance, is that getting rid of the police is simply NOT a realistic option for any country especially not one as violent as the US. It would descend into a Hobbesian nightmare for most, especially the most vulnerable.

Reform is your only hope, as arduous as that seems.

i disagree. we've got the national guard for bedlam but i dont think it would come to that. and i also dont consider looting targets and walmarts bedlam. what are the 40% of unemployed americans who have no money supposed to do? the situation we put these people in has to has some way out.

I lean more towards radical reform.

If I were a state governor, I would get rid of city and county police services and hand it all over to the state police. Local cops could apply for new jobs at the state level, which would need to double in size. It would be super expensive initially but the rationalization would save money after a few years. Put a lot of the savings into improving training. Also a chance to change the culture by starting from near zero.

Of course it will never happen, home rule state and local fiefdoms, etc.

Not bedlam for you out in suburbs. But for those in the inner-cities and urban areas, when those stores pull out, they're not going to come back in this particular climate. Of course, they'll insert the usual corporate gobble-gook on their websites, vague stuff about diversity and standing by the oppressed, etc, but they won't be locating their stores in the high risk areas. Not after they've been burnt-out and looted.

Can I just say - for no particular reason - that Britain invented ‘institutional racism’ years ago after Stephen Lawrence and the McPherson report, or maybe it was after the Brixton riots.

Also your RCMP commissioner looks like a Poundshop Cressida Dick.

RCMP used to have a great image ‘A Mountie always gets their man’ and all that. Never saw a Mountie in Toronto, Quebec, Vancouver, Banff etc. A pity.

That poor woman that got murdered by a lunatic gunman a few months back was a good image for the Mounties.

You mentioned the different types of police in another post. We don’t have any experience of it or understanding of how it operates. The funding of the prison service in the US amazes me. How can you afford to keep so many locked up with good,lengthy sentences ? The actual prisons seem quite modern buildings too. Why can’t Britain do the same?

He did not need to die. He is snoozing/passed out in the drive-thru lane. People have to drive around. Police are called.

What happens when it goes from waking him up to him running away, the struggle and then him being shot? He failed the field sobriety test. They have to arrest him. Things go to shit. He resists arrest. Why? They have his car so he won't be driving drunk anymore. Maybe his ID. One cop is trying to take him. The other caps him. How does this ever go right?

it doesn't. it just keeps happening over and over and over and over again. THIS is exactly why im on the abolishment train. what reform could possibly rid us of this type of behavior nation wide? at a bare minimum, taking all guns away from uniform cops, but i think they'd rather quit than not be able to kill people when they want.

As you know the likely real reason the police did not probe too deeply, was that they considered Lawrence was a drug dealer and gang member, and chalked up as one less vicious thug off the streets. Of course, no police force could actually admit to that and it snowballed from there. All the old Met detectives were pissed-off and couldn't wait to get their pensions and escape what was to come which we have seen in the two separate policing tactics used in London this weekend and last. His mother's an interesting character too.

Hertfordshire police advice police to take the knee and say officers who fail to do so are the problem!

Police chiefs unite to say they were correct not to do anything against BLM and then tell Priti Patel it’s an operational matter so keep out.

The answer to this is to first of all amalgamate problem police forces. You can say it is for economies of scale. Then put in a new head of the reorganised unit and sideline and get rid of the recalcitrant ones. Remove all Common Purpose types. Go back to traditional policing.

On Health & Safety alone, what was permitted to go ahead was reckless. When you start toppling statues in that manner, eventually someone, or some people will get squashed. That's they way I would get them, dereliction of duty to protect the public.

That's 51 division. They cover Regent Park which is one of the few places in Toronto I don't stroll around in after dark. That and 52 Chinatown division surface on headlines every few years for all the bad stuff. Famously the former police chief's son worked at 51 and had a charge of insubordination.

This is a joke.

Sweden has lost control now. Third World types throwing grenades at one another and ignoring any laws they choose. ‘No go’ areas too. Helps keep the crime numbers down if you are not recording them in crime hot spots.
