Odd Things Seen Daily By Me

When summer comes, used plaster strewn over public areas - especially stairs. Honestly women - if the shoe doesn't fit, don't think a bandaid will fix it.

Today I got off the train and found a dirty folded up nappy greeting me.

Every time after a major event (sports, concert, convention, arts, etc.) my neighbourhood is littered with alcohol induced vomit. Today I saw a pigeon pecking at the leftover vomit someone made underneath a bench. I was able to dodge that one only to travel a block later and spot another site of vomit.

Pretty much any British town on a Friday or Saturday night night where they have a concentration of bars and clubs in a particular area, like Broad Street in Birmingham. You need fucking galoshes to get about.

Yes and I remember not to get cash on an early Saturday morning at the bank machine or trip over the pint glasses stacked not so neatly outside of pubs.

I hope the pigeon at least get drunk from eating drunk vomit.

Some house on my commute route now has a life-sized horse figurine, painted, in their driveway up against the garage door. I have no idea why anyone would have such a thing, and it really threw me for a loop the first time I spotted it while speeding by.

It's redneck graffiti.

Muslim couples where the man is dressed in flip flops t-shirt and shorts but the woman is in full niqab. The disparity is even more noticeable now that it's hot in the northeast but what is even more astounding is how the men walk around relatively unencumbered and the women are left pushing strollers, grocery carts, rollerboard luggage, etc. - often a few paces behind the man.

The men have to be free of encumbrances and dressed appropriately to quickly act against infidels who are ogling their burlap clad main squeezes.

A Triumph Stag. Rare enough on its own but it was operational. Now that is an odd occurrance. Or maybe it was just abandoned where it broke.

WTF? I remember seeing one in a junkyard like 20 years ago and not knowing what it was.
Anyway, by the dumpsters at work has appeared a pair of gallon gasoline containers, an open jug of mystery white fluid, and a delightfully exposed large cleaver knife. There is no food service anywhere nearby.

The sheer amount of people playing solitaire.

On the commuter trains, they carry these massive Galaxy Note mobiles and poke at it. I even had one bloke sitting on a small regional jet next to me bring out a 17" laptop to boot it up to play solitaire in Windows. Thanks to his touchpad need to move cards from one side of his screen to another, his elbow would butt into my side.

(I had a laptop out too but I was doing real work in Outlook)

Oops just realized I posted in the wrong thread.

For the past week (with the exception of yesterday), I have been taking the same route to work. During my walk, I come across a one way street with restaurants on one side and some sort of utility building on the other. A man has been lying there, utility building side, every morning face down on with his torso covered by a sewer grate. Every time I walk by with my newspaper, I wonder if he will rustle because of my leather soles.

Now that it is Friday, I wonder if the man is dead. I didn't smell anything besides sewer grate vapour though. A good Samaritan may try to poke at the man to confirm proof of life but as I'm dressed in a Corneliani suit for casual Friday. I'd rather not risk soiling my garments.

Finally I mustered some courage - or perhaps the mixture of guilt and morbid curiosity got the better of me - and this afternoon I approached the prostrate figure. I'd had about 26 gallons of bourbon for lunch, so against my better judgement I gently placed the toe of my leather soled shoes into the man's side. As I did a quantity of intestinal gas escaped from one or the other of his crevices.

I kicked again, slightly harder; no movement or noise. Suddenly I was on my knees straining to lift the bloated weight and turn the carcass over.

The face I saw was horrid, patched with purple, the nose swollen and the eyes - the eyes were as if borrowed from yesterday's catch.

And yet that face...

...It was mine.

The horror, the horror.

I'm wearing Corneliani mainline today. Perhaps a lesser suit.

Only 2 vodkas for lunch.

Was the child abducted? Healed by snake handlers speaking in tongues? Snatched by aliens? Special Forces rendition? The ducks of the reflecting pond saw nothing. Odd.

Men who wear jackets that are too long for them. It either applies to tall men whom I guess grabbed the longest of L jackets or short men who deluded themselves into buying a regular jacket.

Just saw two of them in 15 minutes today.

When it goes past your buttocks, it's too long. Or just have it go down past your knee and wear a top hat like a Victorian.

People who live in the city and cycle to work.

Is it proper to button your suit jacket whilst cycling? Did the people who wore their centre vent jackets of yore do so on their horses?

That said, should women wearing tight & short skirts that reach half way down their thigh also cycle? Does it ventilate better in the heat?

I think you want to button a coat to keep the skirt from flopping around, but similarly you don't want it getting in the way of pumping thighs. With a coat that actually buttoned above the waist, this would make more sense.
A tight skirt seems to be a very poor choice as it is a constrictive garment strained by the action, and decency is likely in peril. A looser one on a woman's bike is probably no big deal.

Surge pricing for my neighbourhood for Uber. I'm fenced in on three sides by the Blue Jays, film festival and the fact one of the subway lines at the central transit station is down this weekend. If I walk one block I enter some surge price zone. If I go two or three blocks (two subway stops), I'm out. Bizzare. This keeps happening in my neighbourhood. This is UberX though. Uber Taxi is immune.

Shaggy beards, the #1 or 0 buzz cut on the sides. Plaid shirts. Tattooes all over your arms or other parts of your body. When will this trend end?

It makes young men look older. At least the metrosexual trends made young men look young.

Lets get Thruth Thruth in here. He's an expert on this shit.

Probably not anytime soon. This is just becoming rampant in the general population so even if the look has jumped the shark we still have many mid to late adopters just getting into the game

If skinny ties are in twilight today, I'd say another four years.

It's moved on to the late adopters /suburban dads. Trends don't sweep all before them or disappear these days like they used to. They start off as small hip or niche trends then spread a bit widely then fade back to a continuing niche. Society and media is fragmented. No one All listen to same songs or radio or clothes. There's no song that little kids grannies, hipsters, mums, teenagers would all know due to society being fragmented by advertisers, and media many options. The Beatles, Stones, Led Zep etc could never happen these days.

The Beatles, Stones, Led Zep etc could never happen these days.

Not even Taylor Swift?

I don't know - during the "Great Recession" we were pretty much all monochromatic in the financial district. Varying tie widths though.

People who wear massive backpacks - I'm talking camping gear sizes in urban cities. Are they advertising they can only afford to stay at hostels? It gets worse when they try to board subways and trains at rush hour. They're literally double occupancy. I thought most of them would be young students, but many look like worn out late 20s or 30s people. Perhaps the sun ravaged their youth.

In the 'odd things overheard by me' department - when I was in physical therapy today there was a Colonel, maybe mid 60's, who was getting treatment and they wanted him to lay down on the table so they could put the stim electrodes on him. He says "I don't like to lay down because I was waterboarded every day for a year in a Vietkong prison. Have trouble sleeping still." Everyone was just kind of looking around with weird looks on their faces. Then he proceeded to talk for 15 minutes about all the ranks in the service and all sorts of other shit.

Rain Man you run into old military guys like this?

No one under 40 has any idea what Vietnam War was or waterboarding.

Wasn't the USA utilising waterboarding as well?

Why are you so condescending on your lot? They could be migrants from Syria or needy Romanians or Greeks.
Ever run into Australian backpackers overseas? I can tell you its almost preferable to be mistaken for an American.
