Don't call them affiliate vendors though. Call them unaffiliated vendors. Fits nicely with the Sarto speak un-, and actually described their relationship with this site more accurately.

How does having small businesses that are (un)affiliated with the site hurt the integrity of the forum? I agree that they shouldn't be allowed to delete posts or have special privileges, but I don't understand why we're against forum discounts either. It gives current, and potential users a reason to stay here and helps to build a relationship between users and the forum.

I never really understood the "Buy Formosa! Buy Vanda! Buy Yount! Buy Vass!" jeering that goes on. I actually cringe when I see certain users tell a beginner to look at C&J or the like for their first calf captoe. But I think Henry Carter can be used as an example of how certain vendors can exist here and stay in the realm of neutrality.

Also, I think there is a lot to learn from directly interacting with people that are in the business. With "shopkeeper" or "vendor" threads, it gives them more incentive to teach us.

One of those brands is not like the other. Or have I become so lost that recommending $150 (on sale) pants to a beginner seems reasonable? Rota, on the other hand...

Someone once asked me why I rarely recommend stuff from NMWA in GNAT--I often will compile 6-12 options when someone is looking for something (from ties to suits). Asked if I had something against them (I don't). It's just that NMWA generally carries non-staple items at prices that beginners really shouldn't be paying. They don't know what works for them. They don't know what their wardrobe is going to be like in 12 months. They don't know what they'll end up liking (hell, for the first couple of months of Styleforum I was convinced I wanted loud, FU jackets. I bought one and I immediately hated it. It didn't get worn a single time).

I get the love of recommending premium brands to people. Part of it is vicarious pleasure; I know that's one of the reasons I love when people ask for tie recommendations and I get to go hunting around various e-stores. But we also have snobbish preferences and unreasonably expect others to share them. I like to think I'm slightly less snobby, but I have no illusions about the way I view many brands.

Anyway, it sometimes feels like some members are more interested in selling stuff (vicarious pleasure, validation of their own purchases, etc) instead of helping the asker address his needs. Not that these are mutually exclusive--to some extent they go hand in hand--but its just that the desire to sell is then the stronger driver in our choice of what we recommend.

And I do say "sometimes." I know that it seems constant, but I think those recommendations (or recommenders) are just what stick in our head. Close to half (I'm being realistic...I wish I could say 75%) of the recommendations I see in that thread are for ties under $75, jackets under $500, and shoes under $400.

Curious about the takes of other GNAT regulars/lurkers

Personally I never directly recommend brands to others. The only occasions when I mention brand names is when someone specifically asks about the brand of something I've posted on WAYWRN, or when someone asks advice on what item to buy: "Should I buy this tie from Brand A, that one from Brand B or the one from Brand C?" But then the brand name is merely used as an identifier.

No man and that's what I like about here, no one gets any special treatment. Personally I try and be fairly objective and join in conversations as much as I can, goes for both here and SF. If you look at the SF AV's that have dropped out you'll probably notice they are all the ones that are there purely to sell and not be a part of the community.

I don't give extra discounts to individual forum members to give me shout outs, don't give bloggers that email me free stuff and don't approach them to offer and while that probably does me out of a few sales in the short term I reckon long term being part of the community is a better bet than doing all that shit.

I think if your going to have other brands on here its important you pick and choose who it is and that's where I think the SF AV system has been let down over the last couple of years, too many vendors and not enough substance. I mean how many custom leather bag makers do we really need?

For someone starting off, I believe I recommeneded Suit Supply, Exquisite Trimmings, Sam Hober, Vanda, and C&J. When I was a fan of NMWA, I just couldn't find any ties that I liked. Vanda usually has the best designs.

Vanda makes some wonderful ties. But again, costs more than what a beginner should pay as he's figuring this stuff out.
 
I personally don't think 99% of the fuckers on SF or here know shit about making clothes or what quality construction costs.
I haven't been on here for awhile but I see not much has changed.
Rambo and the rest should remember you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

I don't want to get into to deep. Fok called me awhile back. He monitors this site and has other monitoring the site for him. While we were talking Rambo got brought into the conversation and he brought up some really good points.
Most of the posts I am reading are just a constant bitch sessions. You guys need to be more up beat. If you think SF lacks a community vibe do something positive.
I get shit on ALL the time on SF. Hell. the CM side is so busy sucking on certain labels nuts that they don't even know the real thing when it's staring them in face.
If you get a bunch of heavy posters screaming and jocking a particular brand and then ask them why is "X" brand good they don't know. They fall back on the 99% answer " I like it ". If they don't like it it's " I don't like it".
Not it wasn't sewn if a particular fashion or the finishing of the fabric was sub par.
I could give 3 or 4 fabrics to 1,000 people even those tool boxes, Manton and moofoofucker. They wouldn't be able to pick out the their favorite fabric in the lot.
The "best" in subjective just like a good percentage of fashion. People love to drink the Kool aide. That's what it's all about.
Truth be told that's why I don't sell a lot of stuff. It's goes over to many peoples heads.
Now, If you want to know a true genius follow the epaulet thread. He's the smartest motherfucker on SF. He makes nothing and sells a shit. It's pure genius.
I know I am ranting more than answering the question.
Point is the people who shop NMWA want to drink the kool aide and believe. Because if they knew the truth they would feel like total chumps because they are getting racked over the coals.

The 'real' Mauro as opposed to...? I assume you see the contradiction in your post: calling 99% of the us here fuckers and then stating that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.... I have therefore no doubt that Grand Potentate Grand Potentate 's 'welcome back' was sarcastic.
