I think people were uncomfortable with the level of anger being projected by two generally nice guys. I doubt if it were Foo and someone going at it anyone would've blinked an eye. It wasn't a response to criticism; it didn't happen the other two times Noodles brought up the jacket.

It's sort of my thread (well, it's a lot of people's thread), and what I really like about it, as I mentioned earlier, is that people consistently interact with each other with the vast majority of social niceties from real life preserved. Instead, you had two grown men letting anger not just influence (which is fine) but dictate their interaction while a bunch of folks line up in the peanut gallery.
Would I want an entire forum to behave like this? Fuck no. That'd be boring as day old shit. And maintaining social niceties doesn't then suggest an absence of criticism; in real life, we criticize our friends all the time. This works because we generally trust that the other person isn't being critical simply (or mostly) because they enjoy being critical. The only real fawning (which is reactions along the lines of "AMAZING! Truly stupendous!, not things like "that's much, much better") that really ever happened in that thread was over
Noodles
and his Formosas (mostly, I think, to placate him knowing how obsessed he'll become if it isn't perfect).
Why criticism died out elsewhere on CM is, well, interesting and worthy of speculation. IN SWD, it isn't anywhere near as bad. My guess is that the normal lens with which we view criticism eroded, thus everyone took criticism negatively, even if it was presented respectfully and with well meaning intent because it's the internet, where we are socialized to assume that nothing is presented respectfully and with well meaning intent. So people stopped trying. And then at some point, the AV's became very good at managing hype/PR (I think the first that really excelled at it was ConradWu).

Shouting has it's place, but it's usually a poor choice when some sort of resolution is desired. Great for emotional release though.
