The Next Election, Political News, and Other Forms of Comedy (US, UK, & Intl)

I just joined Parler this afternoon, out of curiosity. I now know where the endless pile of batshit crazy nonsensical crap you are spewing comes from! It’s almost verbatim! Amazing! It’s like a parallel universe!
Parler is getting ‘deplatformed’(nice euphemism) too. That only reinforces the Pimpernel’s point.

Trump's social media reach was never about the tweets themselves — it was the ability to get the media to cover and amplify whatever outrageous bullshit he put on there and drive the narrative. Without that, he is just another eccentric celebrity ranting to their fans.
Twitter profited from Trump's presence. How many do you think flocked to the platform to share/hear his 'insights'?

All unarmed, unprepared, clearly with nothing but good intentions in their minds. Lol.
You are priceless, Pimpy.
This was no breach in the reality studio...everything was according to script.

He was and still is President of the USA, duly elected, to which your mob decided to treat with all the reverence of a Banana Republic, lessening the office and America in the eyes of the world.

You think the damage done is erased with the removal Trump?

Lot's of interesting cases in the Ukraine at the moment, I expect they may be dropped now Biden's in.

I thought that site was deleted and erased? Never been on it myself.

Google Play and last time I looked Apple were considering it.

I've no intention of ever going anywhere near Parler, there are enough crazies on Twitter...!!!

But they let you say the N word!!

That's a very low bar...

Do you remember when Sky News brought in Faisal Islam as Political Editor?

They pushed Boulton out and Faisal was a disaster ''Er, um, er...'' all the time. They had to bring back Boulton into a prominent political commentary role.

Faisal seems to be doing a bit of freelance for the BBC at present.

I find Sky News too hyperbolic for my taste...

They're an absolute disgrace. As I can pretty much only get Sky News Live on Youtube, I sometimes put it on at work in the lockdown. A relentless stream of fiery activist experts with chips on both shoulders except when it comes to north of the border.

All going off up there to night with Alex Salmond's submission to the Hamilton inguiry.

This is verbatim what I have been saying for years.

no that's the exact wrong angle to look at this from. a large portion of these people have come to a fork in the road after realizing that politics in this country is devoid of any input from its citizens in general on a daily basis. its all a spectacle, like sports, which is why we treat it that way. the fork goes down two paths, conspiracy theory leading into Q and other deranged aspects of society, or radicalization, which unfortunately goes into another fork with fascism or socialism/communism.

Not on the least. These are fat overcoddled babies just like most of the western world.

I thought you had socialist leanings?

Ignore the commentary if you like, but the raw footage of the ‘Miss Guided Patriot’ terrorists is chilling:

Further left than that. I went down the path and drove off the end of the cliff.

What do you think of Tulsi Gabbard? She seems to be a politician of some conviction.

I don't agree with much of her socialism, but she's rational, well thought out and makes a strong case for her positions. To the non-American she comes across extremely well in interviews.

she's pretty useless just like the rest of them. the only reason she's popular is because she's hot. and she's not a socialist.

yes but only some of her positions are good. she's anti-war, which is good.

On the one hand, it is concerning that a company like Twitter controls access to so much public discourse nowadays.

On the other hand, how is this really very different from the situation prior to just a few years ago, where large companies (hello, News Limited!) owned newspapers, radio stations, television stations and even movie studios? There was no right of access then. Murdoch and his minions decided what news to publish, and who was allowed to provide comments on the news of the day. You could write a letter to the editor, but there was no guarantee at all that your letter would be published.

Back then, the only way to get your voice heard was to print and hand out flyers, or to stand on a box at speaker's corner and shout at passers-by. Nowadays, you can start a blog, make a YouTube channel, join Tik Tok, or get yourself heard in a number of other ways.

Yes, Twitter is influential but I think that people forget just how many different ways that individuals can now make themselves heard, compared to just a few short years ago.

The Big Tech monopolies are moving in for the prize now: to become an immoveable extension of government. If they can erase the President, they can erase you.

I see that you still possess your gift for hyperbole!

Trump literally has the biggest bully pulpit in the world. He has a full-time press secretary and a cadre of communications staff. He has the White House website at his command. If he picks up the phone and calls a TV or radio station, he can be broadcast across any news channel he chooses. If he issues a press release, it will be published on the internet and across newspapers. If he holds a press conference, it will be broadcast across TV and the internet for billions to watch.

And this is the person you say has been erased...

The popularity of Twitter is bizarre. Originally the realm of wasters like Stephen Fry. I suppose the limited space for a post attracts those who prefer slogans to anything with any depth.

I'm amazed at how many "conservatives" all of a sudden want the federal government to tell a private company what to do.

Actually I'm not.

Democratic Governments always tell companies what they can and, cannot do (there would be no need for the lobbying industry if this was not the case). No company is allowed to act with impunity, even though some would like to think that they can...

Regarding the popularity of social media and the like, I'm rather taken by the historian Niall Ferguson's point about it having similar effects to the invention of the printing press.

The invention of the printing press led to Luther and the Reformation and, we've never looked back since (ahem!)

The FBI have release security cam pic of another Miss Guided Patriot:
