WDYBT: What Did You Buy Today

I bought another dead man's jacket in Harris tweed. Quite worn I must say but was very cheap. The

girth overall and the sleeves are fine but the body is longer than a day without bread (spanish expression) so will need to shorten it a bit.

I bought a leather offcut to make a case for my overpriced made-in-SomeShithole Samsung. The result wasn't quite shoite, but you really need the full complement of leatherworking tools. I didn't have a stitching horse.

Still, it's bespoke, and I'm within Easyjet range of Napoli.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Two packages arrived today, one containing a vintage tweed overcoat that fits rather well and the other containing a 1996 bespoke sportcoat in a nice Dormeuil fabric that fits overall, but has terrible divots on the sleevehead due to a narrow back. Will seek the opinion of a tailor but I think it has no fix and will have to go back. It's made by Timothy Everest.

Tweed coats are so difficult to find in stores these days. Wish l had a few more. Would be nice to order online but i'd never risk it because fit is impossible to guarantee. FIT IS KING!!! Having coats shortened is very costly and risky...sometimes it works out and sometimes it won't. Buying trousers online is too risky for me also. The only thing l buy online is knitwear.

Now the ultimate question....is a bespoke tweed coat justified, or will MTM do. I am thinking. For me coats need to fit just right. I'd rather pay more and have less stuff because a man's coat needs to be right. I am fussy about things like that.

Not in the UK they are not.

Second hand coats are also readily available and inexpensive.

I am guessing you only want new. A trip to the UK and check out RTW might another option.

Overcoats are meant to fit easily over jackets, jumpers etc. so the fit is usually more forgiving than, say, a jacket.

Maybe shooman is saying coat when others think jacket?

Either way, an overseas trip and rtw is another option. Shooey would obviously pack his own food and not touch airline grub. Though it would not be at all surprising if he had other issues with trips abroad.

As you’ve now learned (I hope) twill is the method of weaving and is mutually exclusive from the weight of the cotton used.

Same as Oxford - we are used to thinking of it as beefy textured cloth like a standard OCBD but it can also be had in very fine weights.

Hmmm, that one close up maybe. But it's more like a poplin from afar.
I look like George Clooney or a young Bryan Ferry - from afar - up close people think of a second hand Harris Tweed jacket that's been worn on a farm for 10 years with moth holes and cigarette burns and never been cleaned.

It's a very fine twill then, but something that fine, I would never consider twill. I always consider twill a bit more beefy on the texture. If that makes sense?
Now we are getting into vintage FOO arguing territory - show us your exclusive chambray shirting from your sekret Napoli tailor....

Correct. And I was fully duped.

I would ditch the George Clooney and go straight to the gentleman that is Bryan Ferry.

How very igent!

Well done.

Hard 3, but I like how they look with only the middle button done. Specially if vintage, then the lapel tends to roll lower than the top button. Cloth is harris tweed btw.
